A Review by BevsPaper

Bolt Action is a contemporary mystery with a female sleuth that really captures your attention. She is rather brash, sometimes rude, and says things that we only wish we could say. Leslie Bolt rides a Harley and has a stash of guns hidden all over her house. As a Detective she has some major trust issues that causes her problems with working with her fellow cops. A serial killer is on the loose, known as the "State Quarter Killer". People with no common connections are being found with State Quarters laying beneath their bodies. Leslie is put on the case with her ex-lover as her partner which causes some tense and sometimes funny moments. She also becomes interested in the new medical examiner as the case unfolds. When her sister comes up missing, she has to wonder if she will be the next victim of the serial killer.

The best line ever:

Can gun hoarding, Harley riding Detective Leslie Bolt conquer her past and capture a serial killer?

Bolt Action - A contemporary Crime Mystery

firearmI have to tell you that I think Victoria Roder has a solid career ahead of her with this hard boiled crime mystery if she were to consider a series with Leslie Bolt as her female sleuth.

Leslie is edgy, sarcastic, and un-trusting of her fellow men and women. You find out that part of that is from a rather grim childhood with a father who you just want to hunt down and shoot. There are times in the book where you can really sympathize with the scars her father left her with and you understand her hard demeanor even better.

I feel with the main character being a female who rides a Harley and loves her guns this book will also appeal to a male audience. There is a bit of romance but done in a way that I think most men will find an integral part of the story and not a turn-off. There is plenty of action to keep the guys enthralled along with Victoria's knowledge of the firearms her character has hidden everywhere.

I'm usually pretty good at figuring out "who done it" before a book ends, but Victoria Roder in Bolt Action...surprised me! I really didn't see it coming!

Give me a hard boiled, street wise chick like Leslie Bolt in Bolt Action.

dustytoes says:

This sounds like the type of book I like.

drifter0658 says:

If it's got a hard edge, is street wise, and has gams that don't quit...it's me. Leslie Bolt could shoot me in my heart any day :)

I rather prefer the sweet little old lady types that surprise the socks off of ya when they solve the mystery.

Rate Bolt Action...Leslie promises not to shoot ya!

Sounds really interesting - you know I'm a fan of mystery stories. I like the female characters who appear ultra-confident on the outside (and have a bit of an inner insecurity that makes her more human, but which she hides). My favorite female mystery character to date has been "Kinsey Milhone" in Sue Grafton's alphabet series of mysteries. Leslie Bolt sounds like a character I will like. Putting Bolt Action on my reading list! Good review.

As my homework assignment for this week's show, I have nearly finished it. I am not fast with this one because Leslie Bolt deserves the slow treatment.
