Bolton UK

Ranked #1,535 in Travel & Places, #58,299 overall

Bolton UK is a large town in the North West of England. While it comes under the Greater Manchester umbrella for many of its local services such as Police and transport, Bolton remains fiercely loyal to its Lancashire county roots.

It has a rich industrial history, playing an active part in Englands Industrial Revolution of the 1700s, being home to Samuel Crompton, inventor of the Spinning Mule.

Today, Bolton is replacing its dying cotton and paper industries with modern new data processing and call centres, hi-tech electronics and IT companies.

Bolton Food & Drink Festival

The ever popular Bolton Food & Drink Festival brought in the crowds despite patchy bursts of rain between spells of glorious sunshine. The aroma as you walk around the stalls has to be experienced to be believed! Of course, there's plenty of food and drink to sample from all over Europe, so as we say..."Get stuck in!" Now although the 2011 Bolton Food Festival has ended, they are already planning a bigger and even better event for next year...can't wait!

Bolton Landmarks

Thanks to its diverse history, Bolton has a wealth of historical monuments, museums, farmers markets and places of interest...not to mention a Premiership football team and several excellent golf clubs.

If you visit the town, pop into Ye Olde Man and Scythe pub (pictured above) which dates back to 1251. Inside the pub is the chair used by the 7th Earl of Derby just before he was taken out to be beheaded back on 15th October 1651.

Ainsworth Village Day, Bolton

Fun in the sun at the Ainsworth Village Day, Bolton

The 2011 Ainsworth Village Day was held on a bright, sunny Saturday, 30th July and the theme this year was Toy Story. As with every other Ainsworth Village Day, all money collected goes to local causes.

There was plenty to keep the kids occupied, with a couple of bouncy castles, a train ride and a number of sideshows, including a face painting booth. Everyone seemed to be having a great time and I look forward to next years event!
