Bonanza got its name from the Comstock Lode which was "an exceptionally large and rich mineral deposit" of silver. Virginia City was founded directly over the lode which was mined for 19 years. Ponderosa was an alternative title of the series, used for the broadcast of syndicated reruns while Bonanza was in first-run on NBC.

    I love Bonanza! I studied Virginia City in high school and even got to visit it once. Of course we went to the Ponderosa too (before it closed down). Thanks for this lens! The quiz was awesome :)

    I grew up watching Bonanza and Gunsmoke. Your lens brought back fond memories of childhood and getting our first color TV! Am I dating myself, or what?! :-)
