The Rock Star's Burden: THERE are probably more annoying things than being hectored about African development by a wealthy Irish rock star in a cowboy hat, but I can't think of one at the moment. If Christmas, season of sob stories, has turned me into Scrooge, I recognize the Dickensian counterpart of Paul Hewson - who calls himself "Bono" - as Mrs. Jellyby in "Bleak House." Harping incessantly on her adopted village of Borrioboola-Gha "on the left bank of the River Niger," Mrs. Jellyby tries to save the Africans by financing them in coffee growing and encouraging schemes "to turn pianoforte legs and establish an export trade," all the while badgering people for money.

The ONE Campaign is engaging Americans through a diverse coalition of faith-based and anti-poverty organizers to show the steps people can take, ONE by ONE, to fight global AIDS and poverty.
DATA [Debt AIDS Trade Africa]: DATA is a new non-profit organization which aims to raise awareness about three things: the crisis of unpayable DEBTS the urgent need for more and better foreign development assistance, especially to fight AIDS, the unfair TRADE rules which keep AFRICA poor and marginalized.

Today debt payments, dwindling development assistance and unfair trading rules are destroying schools and hospitals and encouraging the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS.
Amnesty International: With the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as its creed, Amnesty campaigns worldwide to free prisoners of conscience and ensure fair trials for political prisoners. It aims to abolish the death penalty, torture and end political killings and "disappearances." Amnesty International has around 1million members in 162 countries.
Greenpeace: Greenpeace exists because this fragile earth deserves a voice. It needs solutions. It needs change. It needs action.
