Bono Time's Person of the Year 2005

For charming, bulling and morally blackmailed the leaders of the world's richest countries into forgiving $40 billion in debt owed by the poorest, Bono was named Person of the Year by Time Magazine in 2005.

For his ability to make people listen and make people care about world poverty and AIDS, I introduce my superhero, Paul David Hewson known to most by his nickname, Bono.

He is an amazing example of how one person can make a difference, inspire others and change the world.

Bono Quote on Saving Lives

Eight million people die every year for the price of going out with your friends to the movies and buying an ice cream.

Literally for about $30 a head per year, you could save 8 million lives. Isn't that extraordinary?

Preventable disease - not calamity, not famine, nothing like that - preventable disease, just for the lack of medicines. That is a bargain.

    Bono

Music can change the world
because it can change people.

(RED) was created by Bono and Bobby Shriver, Chairman of DATA to raise awareness and money for The Global Fund by teaming up with the world's most iconic brands to produce (PRODUCT)RED branded products. A percentage of each (PRODUCT)RED product sold is given to The Global Fund. The money helps women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

he is the ultimate man.. with a great big heart.. he has my heart!

SweetMarie83 says:

Bono is absolutely my hero. Besides the fact that his lyrics and voice move me beyond words, his passion, drive, and desire to do good in the world are inspiring.

KarateKatGraphics says:

He could have laid around just enjoying his massive wealth -- and I'm sure he has managed to fit in plenty of that somehow ;) -- but instead he's worked his rear off to fight poverty and inspire change. We all need to use our spheres of influence, and his sphere happens to be huge. He gets that. Definitely a hero!

Bono is an awesome example to everybody...This guy, this person is the one with the ability to change the world for the better good...I would any day, eyes closed would pick Bono as a true hero and the best of the best ever!!!!

Bono Quote on Poverty and Disease

The fact is that this generation -- yours, my generation -- we're the first generation that can look at poverty and disease, look across the ocean to Africa and say with a straight face, we can be the first to end this stupid extreme poverty, where, in a world of plenty, a child can die for lack of food in it's belly.

We can be the first generation. It might take a while, but we can be that generation that says no to stupid poverty.

Bono could just sit back and reap the rewards of a job well done and stay focused on his music career but he doesn't and he steps outside, lending his voice to something extremely important, I'm impressed. I've been a U2 Fan since forever. Great Lense.

I suspect Bono has a sense of humor about people poking fun at him for his crusading against poverty and other major world problems. "No good deed goes unpunished," as they say. I admire him for using his massive sphere of influence to promote change. 5* and a fave, plus I'm rolling this to squidoo.com/unforgettable-fire-remastered

Is the monetary aid, that Bono provides, really helping countries in need? Or is it just continuing the cycle of poverty. Join the debate, should we continue to give aid those in need?

Good job on a positive lens. A lot of people are jeaous of him because what is he? Just another rich rock star. Not so. How many people are willing to put the time and effort in that he does. Being a good businessman, he knows using his celeb status will get him in to see many important people. So why shouldn't he do it?

It's a cheap shot against a lot of activist celebs (IMO) to criticize them. Because how many of those who critcize them get invovled? Not many. Just one view.
