Bonsai Care

Besides the aesthetic aspect of caring for a bonsai tree, it is important to bear in mind the more technical aspects of bonsai care, and water, soil and pottery are vital for this. Remember that different types of soils dry out at different rates, different species of trees have different water requirements, and even various pot styles can make a difference.

Water

The majority of trees die because of dehydration--lack of watering the tree or too low humidity for long periods, and they can also die from being watered too much. There's a wise Japanese rule that says to water three times: once for the pot, once for the soil, and once for the tree. In other words, you water once lightly to allow the pot to get wet. Then you water lightly again so the soil is moistened. Finally, you water to ensure the tree and its roots get the needed water. Learn about the proper soil balance, water, and air for the type of tree you are growing so it develops a healthy root system.

Soil

The soil is a planting medium used for growing bonsai in containers. It directly affects rooting, feeding, watering and transpiration; it is where half your tree lives so adequate soil conditions are fundamental. Bonsai soil is made of particles with the ability to retain moisture and support the growth of roots. It can also be made up of a blend of manmade or organic material to foster growth and root health that will make it easier for you to take care of your tree. Your bonsai tree relies on the topsoil so the first few inches are extremely important, which is why you need to choose soil that is designed specifically for bonsai so you have a quicker water flow and better gas exchange.

Pots

Choice of a pot is important to keep the bonsai's appearance, but it is also fundamental for its growth (or lack thereof!). For those who wonder how these trees are kept tiny, the growth of the bonsai tree depends on the growth of the roots. If the roots can't grow, then tree will remain small. That's why the container that holds the whole tree is so important. The ideal proportions for the pot are relative, but you can stick to 2/3 to 3/4 as wide as the tree is high and 1/2 as deep as the tree is high.
