Bonsai Tree

A bonsai tree is a living miniature tree, kept small through growing it in a container. Other care includes trimming, pruning and repotting. None of these techniques alone is adequate to make a tree small. It takes a lot of care and attention, year after year, to achieve a beautiful bonsai tree.
For those who wonder how these trees are kept tiny, the growth of the bonsai tree depends on the growth of the roots. If the roots can't grow, then tree will remain small. That's why the container that holds the whole tree is key.

We start shaping the tree while it is very young and continue taking care of it as it continues growing. The fact that the tree is grown in a container, the trimming, pruning, repotting and other care given the tree -- all contribute to the final result. The main idea behind trimming is to reduce growth above ground to maintain a balance with the roots underneath. Since these are being limited to grow by the container that holds them, systematic trimming is helpful to achieve a harmonious final result. When heavier branches are removed, we call it pruning. For this you use a concave cutter, which allows you to remove small, medium and even large branches without leaving any visible scars. Roots should only be pruned and your tree repotted when it fills the pot that it is in and the roots have nowhere to go. This will occur about every 2 - 3 years depending on the species of your bonsai and the rate of growth.

Watering is also fundamental to your bonsai tree's healthy growth. Many problems can be attributed to improper watering. If you over-water the tree there is a high risk of the roots rotting, mold growth and hornwort; under-watering can lead to the death of portions of the root system and dependent parts of the tree.
Because bonsai trees are cultivated in limited amounts of soil, adequate feed is very important. As a general rule, a small amount of feed is given in the spring and a larger amount in the fall. Feed for bonsai should contain three principle ingredients; nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potassium.
Taking care of a bonsai takes a lot of time and dedication; but once you master the tricks of trimming, repotting and watering your tree, it will guarantee you years of satisfaction as only a pure form or art can bring.
