How do you explain Boogie Woggie? The New Harvard Dictionary of Music2, 1986, defines "Boogie Woogie" as "a piano blues style featuring percussive ostinato accompaniments" that involve "steadily repeated bass patterns, one or two bars long" that "delineate the 12-bar blues progression, sometimes with IV in measure 2 or 10." This dictionary also states, "Melodies range from series of repeated figures reinforcing the explicit beat (including tremolos, riffs, rapid triplets) to polyrhythmic improvisations." To me that does not explain anything of the beat, the rythm and THE JOY of BW! How about you?<

Facts I found about BW

from many sources

A couple of facts were the same but besides this you will have to go to the links on this lens to read what is said.

Boggie Woogie - spelled Boggie Woggie too - origin from south of Texas, US
It has to do with the sound of the old steam engine trains. When they came tuffing they sounded like the rythm - or did they?

The man on the photo here is George Thomas. He is said the be the first to write down the music.

History of Boggie Woogie
From this site:
une 16, 1865 -- "Juneteenth" -- A Turning Point in the Development of Boogie Woogie

My inquiry into the "origin" of Boogie Woogie within the United States will focus mainly on evidence of when West African percussive ostinato styles and improvised percussive lead parts came to be applied to pianos in the United States. I make several assumptions that I hope are true. First, I assume that slaves had limited access to pianos prior to the end of the Civil War. In general, musical activities of slaves were limited, as these activities were believed by plantation owners to be capable of inciting riots and rebellions. Thus, prior to the civil war, most slave owners would have limited intentional access by slaves to the luxury and high technology of pianos. However, there are almost certainly exceptions to this assumption. Indeed, in these exceptions could lie the origins of Boogie Woogie.

What a fantastic vid of 3 of the true greats. I just can't believe this originated in Texas though. It's TEXAS! Hard to believe music so snappy and divine came out of there. Wonderfully done with a lot of great history.

    Dear Irenemaria,
Congratulations on what you have put together here, it is an excellent resource you have made and very interesting. I too, spend a lot of my spare time on Youtube (username bumblefingers) viewing their great videos.
I am less than impressed with many of those posting clips and promoting their 'boogie woogie lessons'. Banging away with very little touch or feel is not the way to play boogie woogie, in my opinion. Silvan Zingg, Robert Wells, Johan Blom and Axel Zwingenberger are among the better true boogie woogie pianists. Their is a great clip of Johnnie Johnson at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Chuck Berry's pianist for 35 years on Youtube, check it out. There is a boogie pianist with a beautiful touch.

Unfortunately Amazon won't allow mp3 downloads to Australia, otherwise I would be their best customer.

    Keep up the good work.
    Bumblefingers :-)
