Review: Made In The USA by Billie Letts

Review by Daneille Kitchel

I have to admit, I've never read one of Billie Letts' books before I read Made in the USA, but after that, you can bet that she'll be top on my summer reading list.

Ms Letts weaves a compelling story about two wonderful young characters: Lutie, the resourceful 15 year old and her younger brother Fate (It was supposed to be Fale, but someone at the hospital crossed the L and turned it into a T.) The symbolism of Fate's name is not lost on the reader as these two kids travel across the country in search of a father who was never really capable of caring for them since their mother died.

At times sadly humorous and heart wrenching, this is a picture of homelessness that no one cares to see. How DO the thousands of runaway children survive without an adult to care for them? What do they eat? How do they clean themselves? How do they make money?

This book makes you want to run into your children's room and give them a hug - even if they brush you away - they don't know how lucky they are to have you and have a home where they are loved - and you sure don't want them to find out.

Lutie and Fate want a home - they just don't know how far they will have to go to find it.

Bookcase Flying Circus Review - The Turnaround by George Pelecanos

When you were a teenager, did you ever do something stupid? Or were you in the wrong place at the wrong time? I know I was in that position - more than once and I now thank my lucky stars that things then did not turn out badly - but they easily could have.

Well the main characters of George Pelecano's newest novel, The Turnaround, were both stupid and in the wrong place at the wrong time. In 1972, three teenage boys did one stupid thing that changed their lives - actually ended one life - and set the stage for a lifetime of regret and shame.

The beginning of this book is a little slow. Mr Pelecano is masterful at describing the attitudes of the '70's, but as one who lived through them, I felt compelled only to learn more about his characters. Yet, as soon as the characters were flash forwarded to adulthood I was caught in their suspenseful web of relationships and was eager to be led through the story.

This is more intricate and character driven that most of Mr Pelecano's books. I love it when an author with a successful series takes a risk with a change in style and he definitely delivers - bringing to him, I hope a new readership to compliment his current fans.

Bookcase Flying Circus Book Review - A Lucky Child by Thomas Buergenthal

Thomas Buergenthal waited many years to write about his experiences as a young Jewish boy in Nazi Germany. He wrote with the perspective of an adult, but through his eyes of a scared, but determined child. Determined to live. Determined to find his parents after their separation.

The horrors of the war, but also the joys of a loaf of bread, amazing brutality, wonderful kindness....this book has it all.

He WAS incredibly lucky, but also incredibly resourceful for one so young and his account of Auschwitz and ghettos and forced labor are difficult to read, but impossible to put down.

Mr. Buergenthal is now a Judge in the International Court of Justice in The Hague - this is a man that could not read or write at age 11! He is an inspiration to all of us and should be at the top of our reading lists this year!

This book is my favorite read, this year.

Bookcase Flying Circus Book Review - Girls In Trucks by Katie Couch

Be sure to enter this Book Giveaway Above

Sometimes the cover of a book will entice you to read it, or turn you off. But the cover of Girls in Trucks is so synergistic that you will have started the process of reading before turning to the first page. On the cover is a young girl, in a lovingly hand made party dress. She's holding up the hem while she runs barefoot to....or from...? And that is the question.

Girls in Trucks is not just a "coming of age" book, it is a "coming of life" book. It effortlessly leads a reader through the life of.the main character Sarah, a small town girl with "Southern" expectations. If you don't know the meaning of southern expectations, you may think that is has to do with proper manners and ballroom etiquette. But it is much more than that. It is the loyalty in good times and bad, it is the strength in the face of fear and failure and it is grace.

Does Sarah live up to her southern expectations? Is she running away from them, or embracing them?

As a reader, you will fall in love with Sarah, lover her loves, hate her hates and cheer her on in her quest to find herself in the great scheme of life. I know I did.

I found this a spare and dark book. You definitely have to be in a dark mood for this one.

Sway: A Novel

Review of Sway

Day 1. Chapter 1 The Houses, 1969
-"You slide into this book as easy as putting on your shoes for a morning walk. There are no bloody knives, wild car chases or extraterrestrial beings blasting your senses, but a smooth entry into the daily lives of some ordinary kids in an extraordinary time. Lazar's character driven prose curls and twists around dark buried memories of that unique time in history and impels me to remember and shake my head at our naivety."

Day 2 Chapter 2 Rock & Roll 1962
-" When one thinks of rock stars, like the Rolling Stones, one never thinks of their beginnings. The mess and melding of personalities; the drive that renders food, heat, even love - as unnecessary . The hard reality of grit, grime and failure. No - in our minds, it's all easy glit and glitter - sanitized like American Idol. Lazar invites us to imagine their early struggle - it's mean and raw.

Day 3 Chapter 3 The Empress 1928-1942
- "The realization that you are different, the anger, the wonder, the confusion. Some saw the difference when Kenneth was a child, his grandmother and mother knew his life would be difficult, his father ignored it. His anger seethed inside at what he'd spawned." Kenneth became friend to the angry Rolling Stones in about 1967 - drawn to them in part because of thanatomania.

Day 4 Chapter 4 Marrakech, 1967
-"Now this is what we know. Sex. Drugs. Rock n Roll, We begin to recognize the boys - their chrysalis enlarging - their souls fighting inside for freedom, competing for a breathe of air, yet needing each other to break through."

Day 5 Chapter 5 Thanatomania 1963-1964
-" kenneth, now pours all his wretchedness into making films.Strange films that capture the minds of a satanistic underground of humaness.."

Day 6 Chapter 6 Marrakech, 1967
- "The second round in Morocco and as much as it is different, it stays the same. The world goes round. Things will go on, or not. There is no imagining or predicting and each partner plays his or her role in the small theater of life. The love triangle, Brian, Keith and Anita pushing each to uncharted territory. "

Day 7 Chapter 7 Luv N Haight, 1966-1967
- "No flower children here. Just the lost, the broke, the mistreated and the mistrusted.Fertile ground for predators like Manson."

Day 8 The Rest of The Book
- The relationships of the main characters now begin to twist. Some can handle the pressure - others can't. The deranged focus of some is nothing to another. the culmination of the results of these relationships is where the author has been taking us all along. Now you find out why, and how and who.

Sway is a journey that is molded by the people of the times, but not defined by it. I enjoyed the glimpse of fame and infamy.

I received a copy of The Lucky Child, by Thomas Buergenthal, by winning it on this site, and it was thoroughly enjoyable - with a introduction by Eli Wiesel (whom everyone knows wrote Night), It tells the story of a man who is now a judge at the Hague International and who spent his childhood in a concentration camp. Before this, his mother had taken off her wedding ring and gone to a fortune teller, who let her know that she could presage that she was married, and that her child was a "lucky child" who would endure despite unbelievably trying times in the future. The author wonders why he didn't write the book earlier, when the material was fresher in his mind (but I would guess that it would have been too painful to relive those experiences then, and certainly his age helps him take stock of everything that's occurred). A must-read! Thanks to Bookcase Flying Circus for the chance to have won it!
