What To Consider When Hiring A Bookkeeping Business

You've made the decision to hire an outside bookkeeping business to track your company's financials. You know that such a move will free you up to concentrate on the tasks that will help your business grow. There's just one problem: How do you know which bookkeeping business to hire?

Finding Good Service

It's a big decision. You want to hire such a service to make your life easier. But if you hire the wrong bookkeeping service, you'll not only complicate your life further, you could jeopardize your business' future. Bookkeeping mistakes can be costly indeed.

Fortunately, business owners have several resources available to them when it's time to hire a bookkeeping service. Owners who take advantage of them can avoid the costly mistake of hiring an outside bookkeeping service that brings a greater number of troubles than solutions.

First, owners should always check with their local office of the Better Business Bureau before hiring any outside bookkeeping business. The bureau can tell you how many complaints a business has had filed against it. It can also tell you what these complaints focused on and how businesses resolved them. This last point is important: All businesses receive customer complaints. The best companies, though, work with clients and customers to resolve these complaints.

Next, check with your fellow small business owners to see if they work with outside bookkeeping businesses. If they do, ask them for their recommendations. Nothing speaks to the qualify of an outside consulting business than does the recommendation of fellow small business owners. These owners can tell you if a bookkeeping business keeps its promises, provides timely service and answers questions quickly.

You will also want to check that the company isn't being run by someone who is just starting a bookkeeping business. These people can provide good work, but some of them lack the technical proficiency necessary to make accurate journal entries. Some of them may have decided they wanted to start a business, and this seemed like an easy option: probably not the people you want keeping track of your accounting information.

Finally, check online, too. If you have found a bookkeeping business that you'd like to hire, run a quick online search of the company's name. You might find short news articles detailing fines levied against the company. You might find entrepreneurs on a message board complaining about the company's service. Or you might find customers writing in to praise the work the company does.
