We all use bookmarks from time to time whether it's to mark a recipe we want to try or to save our place in a book we are reading. Although these bookmarks are handy to use, they also make nice small gifts to include with a book you are giving to someone. Include a bookmark in a greeting card.

Early bookmarks
Interesting bookmarks date back to an age when there were very few books and the bookmarks from that era became collectors' items. Before Gutenburg's invention of the printing press in the 1400's individual books were printed by various printing methods available at that time. The first printed books were limited and bookmarks were used to carefully prevent the pages from damage. These early bookmarks were made of a great variety of materials.
By the 1850's machine woven bookmarks were manufactured for every occasion and were special gift items, sometimes intended for use as Bible markers. In the 1880's printed books became more available and cardboard bookmarks were more commonly used.

CORNER BOOKMARK CRAFT IDEAS

SIMPLE CORNER BOOKMARKS

One of the simplest bookmarks is to cut off the corner of an envelope and slip it on the corner of the page we are saving. These corner bookmarks can be decorated in many ways using colored markers, rubber stamps, stickers and many other original ways you may think of. Any colored envelopes you may find in your junk mail can be used for corner bookmarks.

Take this drawing to a copy center to have the images copied the correct size - or redraw them by hand in the sizes as shown.

What fun it is to see this cute bunny peeking over the top edge of my book while keeping my place for me..
Instructions: I measured corner of an envelope 2-1/2 inches on each side and cut across. Then I traced the the ears and face on another piece of paper and glued them in place.

Folded Corner Bookmark - Craft Instrucions and a Video

The folding of beautiful paper is a simple way of making a corner bookmark. The bookmark can be left on a page corner while you are reading so it is always at hand when you need to lay the book down to go for that extra cup of coffee. And because they are easy and inexpensive to make, it's fun to have some on hand to give to friends or to the members of your book club. A 6" x 6" square of paper is all that is required. It can be made out of any paper but is especially nice if made with colorfully designed paper.

Optional - This is how I made the bead decoration for the crochet corner bookmark:

Materials for adding the bead decoration to the corner bookmark:
1 yard 1/4 inch ribbon
A few beads (size: 5 or 6 mm)
Scissors
Clear finger nail polish

Instructions
Thread the ribbon through a stitch just under the edge of the crochet edge around the bookmark.
Tie the ribbon at its center point with a double knot.
Cut one end of the ribbon diagonally to form a point to thread the beads. Add beads.
Determine the length you want the finished decoration to be. Ours are approximately one and a half inch and two inches when finished.
Tie a knot just under the last bead applied. Tie a second knot on top of it
Check to be sure the beads will not come off. Tie another knot if necessary.

Repeat these instructions for the second set of beads. Have one set a little longer than the other.

Trim the ends of the ribbon and apply clear nail polish to the knots to prevent fraying. Let dry.

BEADED BOOKMARKS

Making a beaded bookmark is a fun activity and stringing beads and weaving beads are two common ways of creating a useful and beautiful gift. The size of beads and cord or beading thread to use is suggested in the patterns you choose for your work and a list of the material you need will generally be included..Using kits is good idea with all of the necessary materials included so that they will not have to be purchased individually.

Beaded Bookmark Instructions - An Easy Craft Idea

Materials -
1/4 inch polyester ribbon - 36 inches long
A variety of 8 to 12 beads (5 or 6 mm)
Scissors
Clear fingernail polish

Tie a knot near one end of the ribbon. Tie another knot on top of it. Cut the opposite end of the ribbon diagonally to form a point for threading the beads

Thread one bead onto the ribbon. Slide it down to the knot and be sure that the hole of the bead is small enough so the bead cannot slip off. Add 3 to 4 additional beads, depending on your choice of colors and sizes. If the end of the ribbon begins to fray, making it difficult to slip the next bead on the ribbon, cut the end diagonally again to form a new point. After adding all of the beads for one end of the bookmark, tie another knot up close to the last bead applied.

Lay the ribbon on a book to determine the length you would like your bookmark to be. The beads will lay outside of the book at the top and at the bottom. Tie a knot in the ribbon and add the beads to this end of the bookmark. Tie a knot up close to the last bead applied. Add an additional knot on top of it, making sure the beads will not come off. Trim the ends of the ribbon. Apply clear nail polish to the knots at each end and let dry.

COUNTED CROSS STITCH

A Counted Cross Stitch Bookmark you can Embroider

Counted Cross Stitch, a form of needlework, is done on even weave fabric using a blunt needle with a large eye. The fabric threads are counted before inserting the needle in the spaces of the even weave fabric. Small x's are formed in each square of the fabric using embroidery floss. The embroiderer uses printed charts which show how many threads to count to determine the placement of the stitches and also the color of the cross. Counted Cross Stitch is usually done on Aida cloth with embroidery floss, and the number of strands of floss to use is printed on the pattern. This needlework technique, cross stitch embroidery, dates back many centuries as seen on household items and clothing in many museums
