New Life for Old Books
Okay, Tell Me More!
So, how exactly does BookMooch work?1) You can earn points on BookMooch for every book you enter into the system that you own and you're willing to give away. You get 1/10th of a point for each book you list.
2) When your book ends up on someone else's wishlist, they will get an e-mail and then will request it from you. When you respond to a mooch request and send your book off to them, then you will be awarded 1 point (or 3 points if you mail the book to a user in another country!). I typically send all my books via "Media Mail" to save on my own costs (I spend about $2 a book).
3) You then can use your points to mooch books from others! Each book you mooch will cost 1 point (or 2 points if it will be coming to you from another country).
4) One last thing: Don't forget to acknowledge that you received the book you mooched! After you leave feedback for a sender, you'll also earn another 1/10th of a point.
How About the Fine Print?
Is there anything else you need to know about BookMooch? Yes:First, you can't be a leech on BookMooch. You have to send out at least 1 book for every 5 books you receive or you won't be able to mooch any books (even if you have the points) until you improve your ratio.
Also, if you have a bad feedback score, people may refuse your mooch requests. The way you earn good feedback is through responding promptly to mooches, safely packaging your books and being honest. Be sure to list any notes on the condition of your books and also check to be sure you are listing the right edition of that title.
Also, if a book happens to get lost in the mail the sender will get their point anyway, and the receiver doesn't lose a point. But you are only allowed a limited number of books to be marked as "lost in the mail" in order to limit possible fraud.
