Great books for 2 year olds

I have a two year old son and we just love reading together. Normally he is running about like a mad thing so it's nice when we sit down together and read. Reading with a two year old has lots of benefits. It improves language and vocabulary. I can really see this with my son. Reading together is really helping his vocabulary and he now repeats words and phrases that I say from the books. It is also nice to have quality time together without any distractions. Additionally, toddlers who have adults that read with them also tend to do better when they start school. So, start reading with your toddler. It's not just for Mums and Dad. Grandparents, carers, friends and siblings can read with young children too. Here are some great books I would recommend for reading to 2 year olds.

You can't really go wrong if you choose a book that has stood the test of time as it has been recommended by generations of children. Some of the books below are read at the toddler groups we go to and it is amazing how the young children will sit down, listen intently and join in the stories. Stories with animals

Toddlers love learning about animals and are fascinated by stories with animals in them. Reading books is great because they get to be introduced to animals they aren't likely to see in the street everyday. Here are some great books featuring animals.

This is another perfect book for 2 year olds. It's a story about a gorilla who isn't ready for bed yet so lets himself out of his cage when he is meant to be asleep and follows the zoo keeper on his rounds of the zoo. This will become another instant favorite.

My 2 year old loves Thomas the tank engine and loves any book to do with Thomas. We have some books I would consider boring but he loves them because they feature Thomas, Percy and James. Here are a few that we both think are good Thomas the tank engine book choices.

My son and I love Julia Donaldson books. Her stories are beautifully illustrated. The rhyming is brilliant and I don't get tired of reading her books over and over. Our particular favorites are The Gruffalo and Room on a Broom. These books are guarenteed to be favorites in your collection for a long time. Great for reading to children of all ages.

Kipper the Dog

My son really loves the Kipper the Dog stories and I find them really lovely stories to read too. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the stories are simple and sweet. These are probably particularly good for the younger 2 year old.

Dinosaur books

Toddlers are fascinated by dinosaurs. Here are some great books that feature dinosuars. I especially like the book How do dinosaurs say goodnight. It is an excellent bedtime book. The dinosuars set excellent examples of how to children should go to bed (lots of hugs and kisses before whispering goodnight and going to sleep).

A book about humanity

This book is a lovely enjoyable book that teaches children that there are lots of other children who live in different homes and places, go to different schools and speak different languages around the world. I A good book to introduce young children to the idea that despite our outward appearances and differences, under the skin we are all the same.

I think you hit all the big ones. We loved Goodnight Moon when my kids were young. Eric Carle and Jan Brett are two of my favorite authors. I lensrolled this to my Eric Carle and Jan Brett lenses
