Top 10 List of Best Buddhist Books

These books explain Buddhism for a modern Western audience. They generally focus on the practical aspects of Buddhism: how to live your life well and meditation.

When I started this page, I based it on what sold on Amazon and what got good ratings there. However, a year later I've updated it to list what sells best on this page. That means the order of the books has been changed and here and there some books have moved off the top 10. I do have them listed at the bottom though, as further suggestions.

I've also made a list of the best scholarly books on Buddhism.

1) The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching

Thich Nhat Hanh on Buddhism

The basic teachings of Buddhism explained by Thich Nhat Hanh. While he follows the traditional topics (the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Twelve Links of Interdependent Co-Arising etc.) his style is fresh and practical.

Mindfulness is about living the moment - not by just partying your life away, but by being aware of where you are, what you are, right now. In our busy lives this is an essential practice to make sure you don't run away with yourself. Mindfulness practice can be as simple as counting ten breaths, or being aware of your feet as you walk. Try it - you'll find it makes a difference.

3) How to Practice : The Way to a Meaningful Life

The Dalai Lama about Buddhism

The Dalai Lama, a formidable teacher, presents a way that is the middle way, but not necessarily the easy way. Because the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism has a natural gift as well as the translating and publishing resources that makes his teachings accessible, it is easy to forget the rigor and depth of those teachings. Too, Buddhism so often appears in the West as a system of daily behavior and practice that it is also easy to overlook the compelling intellectual challenge it presents to the Western understanding of reality. His Holiness starts on familiar Buddhist ground (morality of action, suffering, compassion) and chapter by chapter adds doctrine and complexity until teachings from the heights of imaginative Tantra and Tibetan deity yoga are being explicated.

For the uninitiated the climb is steep, and those seeking general ethical guidance would do better with an easier text (His Holiness has written those, too). For the serious, however, the Dalai Lama offers elegant clarity about the paradoxes at the heart of Buddhism including the central Heart Sutra itself, the teaching of form-is-emptiness and about the intellectual intricacy of Buddhist teachings. Tibetan Buddhism is considered the esoteric wing of Buddhism; this slice shows some layers of its complexity while whetting the spiritual appetite for more understanding, or what Buddhists would call the intention for enlightenment.

4) Buddhism Plain and Simple

Top Buddhist bestseller

In this book Steve Hagen puts the essence of Zen Buddhism in simple words - deceptively simple. Reading a page a day would not be too little. One should let the words sink in, instead of wanting to read page after page like a novel.

Bestselling famous Buddhist Author

Best Zen Buddhism Books
Zen Buddhism is perhaps one of the least understood forms of Buddhism, precisely because it's so well known. On the other hand - perhaps it's the type of Buddhism best suited to the west, because of it's anti-everything rhetoric.
Who is Steve Hagen
His book 'Buddhism Plain and Simple' is one of the best selling Buddhism books of our time. In it Steve teaches Buddhism as we many people love to see it: as a practical spiritual system, not a belief system or a religion.

5) Buddhism for Beginners

Great Thubten Chodron Bestseller

The second woman on our list - also a real Buddhist teacher this time. Thubten Chodron introduces Buddhism, and dispels many of the misconceptions around it. It is probably no coincident that Thubten Chodron and Pema Chodron are both from the same Tibetan Buddhist lineage.

6) Taking the Leap: Freeing Ourselves from Old Habits and Fears

Great Pema Chodron Bestseller

This gently encouraging book by popular teacher Chodron (When Things Fall Apart; The Places That Scare You) applies Buddhist wisdom to the problems of deeply ingrained reactions. An American Buddhist nun in the lineage of Tibetan master Chogyam Trungpa, she writes that we already have what we need to change and heal. Chodron focuses on the preverbal moment-called shenpa in Tibetan-in which individuals are hooked into harmful stories, emotions and actions within the flux of their experiences. Clear descriptions of how this process works are accompanied by simple techniques to begin to break the cycle. Her suggestions can be easily practiced by anyone at any time without meditation training, although she presents the benefits of sitting meditation. With anecdotes from her teachers and examples from her own and others' lives, Chodron demonstrates that people can stop their suffering and access their natural intelligence, warmth and openness. Throughout, she emphasizes the global implications of personal change. Among her strengths are compassion for the difficulty of human existence and her willingness to acknowledge her own failings. This short guide provides valuable tools for change in uncertain times. (Sept. 8)

7) In My Own Words: An Introduction to My Teachings and Philosophy

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is celebrated as Buddhism's preeminent spiritual master and teacher, embodying the highest aspirations of this rich tradition that is more than 2,500 years old. With both profundity and simplicity, he has carried the nuanced teachings of the Buddha to the far corners of the globe, and in the process has touched and transformed millions of lives. Like the Buddha himself, the Dalai Lama, with his ever-smiling face, reaches out to people in ways that connect to their individual mental dispositions, abilities, and everyday realities. Buddhism, which never seeks to proselytize, has been made accessible by the Dalai Lama to both non-Buddhists and Buddhists alike so that we may all learn from one of the most valuable strands of our shared heritage.
This fascinating book brings together extracts from some of His Holiness's most powerful writings and talks. As he explains the elements of the Buddha's teachings and the basic practices of meditation, he also engages and reconciles the innovations of modern science with Buddhist perspectives. Ultimately, His Holiness calls for the celebration of diversity and the recognition of interdependence that breeds a sense of Universal Responsibility-which must govern all of our relationships in this increasingly fragmented world.
Serving as the perfect introduction to the Dalai Lama's philosophy, both Buddhist and secular, In My Own Words is just the book for gleaning insights into the mind of one of the world's greatest spiritual icons.

What the Buddha Taught, by Walpola Rahula, there is no Book on this planet as honest and as close to what Buddha taught to us, most of all other books do manipulate the truth and lies about Buddhism, atleast there is lots of Myths added to Buddha's teachings, that is not true. Buddha do not believe in God, do not believe in any myths and Buddha does not believe in rebirth, soul and such shits, so anyone who talks about all those things are simply Liars. If you really would like to know the truth about Buddha, then read no other than Walpola Rahula's Book, then if you wish go ahead and read all the books in the world, nothing will move you as Walpola Rahula's ground breaking honesty.
