Slash (Hardcover) A behind the scenes look into Guns n Roses by Slash
Readers Reviews.....
Few veteran rockers are more eligible for a tell-all autobiography than Slash, because he should've died ten times (and really did once) and because everyone wants the dirt on that old band of his. Thanks to Slash's unique background, low-key humility, and position in one of the most newsworthy bands of all time, this very readable bio is a blast for fans and non-fans alike. The book dependably starts with Slash's unique early home life and youthful talents that fell into juvenile delinquency and paying dues in the LA sleaze metal scene. As for that famous old band, Axl Rose is curiously vague here, perhaps because he was as incomprehensible to Slash as to everyone else, and Slash largely avoids demonization of Axl for the band's bizarre demise, and just gives what he freely admits is his side of the story. But the book is full of trusty compatriots Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin, Steven Adler, and Matt Sorum - and the info on the mysterious Izzy in particular will be a delight for fans. Overall Slash remains humble about his part in the band's stupendous success and influence, and mostly avoids trying to put his awesome guitar talents into words. At his most immodest, Slash merely refers to himself as "a fairly good guitar player." ***By doomsdayer520

This is the usual dope fiend, rock n' roll guitar player's story. Drink the usual half gallon of booze, load up with coke and heroin, hallucinate, run around looking for the little green men with a gun and passout. Then he starts that round all over again the next day. However, it is an unbelievably good read and is well-written. Slash and Nikki Sixx are brothers of the drug world and experienced the same drug induced nightmares. I first read the Heroin Diaries by Nikki and then Slash. How either one of these guys are still alive I do not know. The book flows with good stories and Slash does not leave any of the gory stuff out. I highly recommend it if you want to know everything about Slash from his childhood to the Guns N' Roses era to the present with nothing left out. You will not be disappointed. ****By Lynne Berry "Pink Popsicle"

Readers Reviews.....

Sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll. Sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll. Sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll. Those three things make up the bulk of "Walk This Way: The Autobiography of Aerosmith." And amazingly, that repetition doesn't make it bad. Rather it just adds a guilty pleasure tinge to one of the better rock band biographies out there.

They were some young boys from Boston who wanted to make music, but nobody could have guessed that they would become one of the biggest rock bands of the 70s. Girlfriends and wives, drugs of all kinds (one rock wife used cocaine as eyeliner), plenty of concerts and devoted fans, and a life of reckless excess caught to Aerosmith. They partied hard, and it almost destroyed them. Somehow they got their act back together, cleaned up, and are back rocking onstage.

Unlike the disappointing autobiography by the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith's book has a feeling of authenticity. You get the feeling that because of their wild pasts, this is a bit of a confession for them -- "I was bad and this was what I did, and now I know I was an idiot." They give a sense of the day-to-day life of a major rock band, both the good and the bad. The level of detail is simply astounding -- and many little questions are answered. Wanna know why Steven started putting scarves on his mike stands? This book will tell you!

I have read the Motley Crue book, and was so surprised at how decadent that group was, until I read WALK THIS WAY. Aerosmith makes Motley Crue look like a bunch of choir boys and saints. I love Aerosmith's music and was very happy to see them rise to the top once again. The book travels with the band from their humble beginnings in New Hampshire to their rise to the top of the mountain till the drugs and alcohol had them all crash and lose it all. The book ends with the release of the NINE LIVES Cd. With this book we get straight from the band members themselves the stories behind writing the hit songs, all the internal conflicts that destroyed the band, all the drug use, girlfriends, everything is covered here in this book with no one being protected. No names have changed. This book will keep you hooked as you go from one story to the next. While some of the members have different recollections of some of the events, they are not that far off and you get to whole inside look into the greatest american band their has ever been. So I suggest that if you like reading about the bands you dig, you go out and get this book. You will not be disappointed!!!

Readers Reviews....

Nikki Sixx has treated his fans and the memoir-consuming public to a real, live diary of a dope fiend. The Heroin Diaries recounts a dark year in the life of the Motley Crue bandleader/bassist. During 1987, the Crue was on top of the world with the Girls, Girls, Girls album release and world tour, but Nikki was hopelessly addicted to heroin (and coke, and pills, and casual sex), and living a caricature of the rock star lifestyle. (In perhaps the lowest moment of the book, he steals the girlfriend of a member of his management team. Well, he doesn't "steal" her. He meets her, wows her with his rock star style, bends her over some equipment backstage, and moves on. Without any regard for the relationship he just destroyed.)

I had some hesitations about an art-style book written in diary form, with a smattering of lyrics and ink-blot-style illustrations. I'm a huge fan of The Dirt, and at a quick glance, this appeared to be more of a vanity project. Well, don't judge a book by its cover! The Heroin Diaries does contain Nikki's insane drug-addled ramblings, but it is augmented by quotes from band members, ex-girlfriends, photographers, band management, family, and friends. These are interspersed with the rather terse diary entries to provide perspective and context for Nikki's writings. All the players are brutally honest about Nikki's (and their own) failings during the hedonistic days of Motley Crue. (I now forgive the delay of the release of this book--I'm glad the authors and editors spent the time getting these quotes on the record.) The reader is treated to an inside look at what it is like to have all the money in the world and not observe any of the limits of traditional society.

Backstage Passes: Life on the Wild Side with David Bowie

Ya know, you have to take this book with a grain of salt. She is his ex-wife after all. But aside from the occasional "And did I mention this embarrasing sexual problem David has" and the long list of "But look at all the people who wanted to sleep with me!", this was a highly entertaining book. It was well written and witty. Who knows how many of the stories are true, although I have read other Bowie biographies and can confirm from other sources that a good many of them are. Also, it's nice to get the point of view of someone who was so close to it all. Go ahead and read this book. I recommend reading it in conjunction with a very thoroughly researched "Alias David Bowie" or some other such biography in addition. But this really was an enjoyable book. I intend to make several of my friends read it, just for pleasure although they have no particular interest in Bowie. It's just a fun read.
