Dr. Seuss, also known as Theodor Geisel
Most of my fondest childhood memories consist of my mother and a book by Dr. Seuss.... any book by Dr. Seuss! Even today, with her children (and some of her grandchildren!) grown, one of my mother's proudest accomplishments is being able to recite Dr. Seuss's ABCs by heart...Growing up in a home where literacy was a high priority made a huge difference to my childhood. With a good book a child never has to be lonely... or sad... or afraid. And with a Dr. Seuss book, a child never has to be without laughter and a good dose of zaniness!
But, if you think you know all about Dr. Seuss... (Isn't he the guy who wrote The Cat in the Hat? Yeah, and a couple of other funny books, too, I think!) be prepared to be surprised! Not all of Dr. Seuss's books were meant for children... but they all teach a lesson and touch both your heart and your funny-bone.

Seuss!
And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street
Published in 1937
Young Marco has been told to keep his eyes open on his way too and from school and to give a report of anything interesting or unusual to his father. Well, nothing unusual or interesting has been found.... so Marco's imagination begins to go wild, spinning an outlandish tale of parades, airplanes dumping confetti, big brass bands and more! Luckily, our young adventurer with the wild imagination (possibly based upon a young Ted Geisel?) couldn't bring himself to lie to his dad and has to admit that he has seen nothing but a horse and a wagon all day.

The Advertising Art of Dr. Seuss
I'll Bet You Haven't Seen THESE...
Dr. Seuss made a very good living during the Great Depression by doing advertising campaigns for everyone from Flit (bugspray) to Standard Oil, Ford, and General Electric. After leaving Oxford University, he was given a chance to draw cartoons for the magazine Judge. One of his cartoons depicted a beleaguered knight facing a dragon in his bedchamber. Rather than drawing a sword, the knight just sighs "Darn it all, another dragon. And just after I'd sprayed the whole castle with Flit". And the rest... as they say... is history.
You can see more of his advertising samples here.

Thidwick the Big Hearted Moose
Published in 1948
Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose (Classic Seuss)
Amazon Price: $5.76 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
Thidwick the Big Hearted Moose is an excellent resource for any parent who wants their child to know that its okay to say "no" to ideas or activities that aren't right for them. Just because someone asks you for something does not mean that you have to comply just to be nice.
Thidwick learns this lesson by almost losing his head (literally!) due to the selfishness and laziness of a whole slew of animals who think they have the right to live in his antlers... whether he wants them to or not.

If I Ran the Circus
Published in 1956
If I Ran the Circus (Classic Seuss)
Amazon Price: $7.00 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
Young Morris McGurk wants to turn the vacant lot behind Sneelock's Store. (Poor Mr. Sneelock, of course, will have to do all of the heavy labor involved!) This won't be just any circus, though.... this will be the most amazing, fantastical circus ever! To open, the crowd will be greeted on opening night by "the horn-tooting apes from the Jungles of Jorn." One creature gets to use his belly as a kettle drum... don't worry, though, it "doesn't hurt him a bit cause his drum-tummy's numb!"

Your Job In Germany
Dr. Seuss Wrote THAT???
This is a very difficult video to watch. On the one hand, it feels as if an entire people are being singled out as being evil and unworthy. On the other hand, there are very, very graphic depictions and historically accurate references to the atrocities committed in three major wars begun by those same people. Remember, this video was not designed to be shown to all Americans, only those soldiers who needed to stand guard within Germany ... and that WWII was just ended and fresh in the memories of all involved.
Well worth a watch, not for children.
