Books for Sixth Graders to Read
It is interesting watching 6th graders start to read series books. The Twilight books and Harry Potter books are mostly all out, so they don't have to wait for the big release to read the next one, although The 39 Clues Books falls into this category. Most of the books here, my wife has read alongside my daugthers. This provides a way to communicate any particular events that happened within the books.
I believe reading is by far the best way for children to learn, in fact, the better reader you are, normally the better learner you are as you tend to understand the things around you quicker. Readers are better test takers, as they can quickly grasp the question being asked and therefore understand how to answer the question. And of course, reading is fun.
If you find these sixth grade books too simple or too challenging, please check out these 5th grade books or 7th grade books.

Sixth Grade Reading Strategies
Strategies 6th graders should be trying to master
- Connecting Known to New - 6th grade readers activate relevant, prior knowledge (schema) before, during, and after reading text. Sixth graders use prior knowledge to build mental models to use to evaluate what they read.
- Ask Questions - 6th grade readers ask questions of themselves, the authors, and the texts they read. Sixth graders use their questions to clarify and to focus their reading.
- Determine Importance - 6th grade readers determine the most important ideas and themes in a text. Sixth graders use their conclusions about important ideas to focus their reading and to exclude peripheral or unimportant details from memory.
- Form Sensory Images - 6th grade readers create visual and other sensory images from text during and after reading. These images may include visual, auditory and other sensory connections to the text. 6th grade readers use these images to deepen their understanding of the text.
- Infer Meaning - 6th grade readers draw inferences from text. Sixth graders use their prior knowledge (schema) and textual information to draw conclusions, make critical judgments, and form unique interpretations from text. Inferences may occur in the form of conclusions, predictions, or new ideas.
- Synthesize Ideas - 6th grade readers retell and synthesize what they have read. Sixth graders attend to the most important information and to the clarity of the synthesis itself. They synthesize to better understand what they have read.
- Solve Reading Problems - 6th grade readers utilize a variety of fix-up strategies to repair comprehension when it breaks down. Sixth graders select appropriate fix-up strategies from one of the six language systems (pragmatic, schematic, semantic, syntactic, lexical, or grapho-phonic) to best solve a given problem in a given reading situation.

- The books on this lens are from those read by my children in sixth grade. Starting in the fall of 2012, my son will be entering sixth grade and I will be updating this page with new books at that time.
You are correct in noticing that it has been two years since my daughter was a sixth grader.

- My son, a 6th grader, finished Percy Jackson in 2 months and Harry Potter series in 4 months in 4th grade. Now, he's reading Hunger Games, Eragon, and Les Miserable. The librarian scratched her head in finding new books for him to read. He's already read Gregor the Overlander, which is the book for the next book club. My daughter who is now in 4th grader is not an avid reader.
