The mission of BOOKS for the BARRIOS, a registered Non-Profit Organisation, is to strengthen public elementary school education worldwide, equal access to quality education to all children, most especially the disadvantaged children. We have many programs designed to help students and teachers, both at home in the U.S. and throughout the world. Over the past two decades, BOOKS for the BARRIOS has made a major impact on education in many impoverished areas of the world and on the awareness of U.S. children. The following are our major programs and some of our proudest accomplishments.

See how we involve U.S. children in the process of helping their overseas counterparts through educational field trips. We help sustain the global and U.S. environment by diverting at least 700,000 pounds of valuable books and learning tools heading to U.S. landfills yearly. We offer consulting services for replicating our model in U.S. cities and developing countries, and our Global Pupils' E-mail Program has nearly 40,000 participants. We work closely with American military combat forces in conflict areas by sharing our resources to support their local humanitarian aid projects.

About Books for the Barrios

A Registered NPO, Category - B Educational Institutions / B24 Primary/Elementary Schools

Librarian's Counterhttp://www.booksforthebarrios.com

BOOKS for the BARRIOS began in 1981 among U.S. Navy families who were stationed in the Philippines. From 1981 to 1986, they worked closely with other knowledgeable, motivated volunteers as well as the U.S. Navy and Philippines Airlines to distribute hundreds of thousands of books throughout the Philippines. American children play a pivotal role in building and driving the organization's vision and operations. Growth of the organization into a worldwide project has been through the emphasis of the contribution and critical role of all participants, whether dedicated staff and/or volunteers who work tirelessly to help collect and distribute educational materials.

Many developing countries are suffering from a "brain drain" losing many of its educated population for opportunities abroad, especially their most qualified teachers. The effects are widespread but strengthening the education is the key element in securing economic development and a better quality of life for citizens around the world.

To date, BOOKS for the BARRIOS has sent over 12 million books overseas, trained teachers in developing countries in a modern method of teaching and established over 50 Model-of-Excellence schools, helping millions of children throughout the world. The organization has expanded allowing it to reach needy schools by directly sending books to Mexico, Honduras, Philippines and Bhutan, as well as providing consulting services to other non-profit organizations who want to help over 140 book-deprived countries. Today, a mounting debt, economic stagnation and decline and widening disparities among its people continue to plague all developing countries. This is happening on a global scale with widespread effects, but strengthening education is a key element in securing economic development throughout the world.

Books for the Barrios will benefit enormously from a grants and donations by enabling the distribution of millions more books, packaging and postage to our 50 libraries and schools. Books for the Barrios is wholly reliant on donations and gifts from the public and is a registered Non Profit Organisation

The mission of BOOKS for the BARRIOS, a registered Non-Profit Organisation, is to strengthen public elementary school education worldwide, equal access to quality education to all children, most especially the disadvantaged children. We have many programs designed to help students and teachers, both at home in the U.S. and throughout the world, including teacher training, feeding schemes, sourcing, providing and shipping educational materials, medical schemes, amongst so many others.

Current projects include the feeding, de-worming and educational schemes for AETA children in the Philippines. Pictures, commentary and slideshows are all available on our blog

This summer Books for the Barrios feeding and de worming program continues with the Aeta Children. We need all the support we can get - PLEASE - join our Facebook Cause & Fan Pages for beautiful inspirational words and images of these little kids who NEED US!

We also are working on Sitio Target, Sapang Bato Elementary School
Brgy. Sapang Bato Clark Angeles City Pampanga, Philippines.

In addition to the above BOOKS for the BARRIOS has sent over 12 million books overseas, trained teachers in developing countries in a modern method of teaching and established over 50 Model-of-Excellence schools, helping millions of children throughout the world.

Working with Trust in Education (TIE) in Afghanistan, we are desperately needing funds and support to transport supplies to complete the building of a school in Farza for 400 young girls, who have been affected adversely by the war. The costs involved are high, but the quality of education and the excitement around this project will make it worthwhile. Again full details available on our blog

Toys for Troops is another project that we undertake every year. Working closely with the Military, Infantry, Navy and Marines etc , we rely on the good-hearted and generous natures of citizens around the world for support, in donation or in kind. We have a wish-list too :)

Thanks so much for your support - and please feel free forward this page to any friends you think might be interested. If every person contributed just $5 it would soon mount up and just think of the postage and packaging and delivery that would cover, not to mention fixing up the schools and turning them into A Grade Learning Facilities, such as the Michael Yon Library, which has a Computer Room, the only of its kind in the area.

Will you *Please* also take a moment by posting this link or the entire page to your blog or social media site, or sharing the link in Twitter, Facebook, My Space, Dig, Friendfeed, anywhere. The more people who are aware of the plight of these innocent young children who are affected by war which they do not understand, the more chance we have of making a difference. Remember it only takes ONE person to make the effort - and that person can change - or save - the life of a child.

With so much hope and gratitude for your continued support

A Pictorial essay posted by a selfless tireless worker, whose hopes and dreams lie in helping those children in war-torn or affected areas of the world... The Military in various parts of the world are an integral part of the success of Books for the Barrios
Ephraim Toche

(Posted via our Facebook accounts, so I am quoting Ephraim verbatim - and make no edit on grammar or spelling) Ephraim is what I term an EARTH ANGEL, and has uploaded some beautiful pictures taken recently with descriptions of operations in those areas. I am happy to be able to share yet one more success story!

This Pictorial Essay takes Place in the Phillipines. I pray that the time will soon come where I am able to meet face to face with this astonishing man, the troops who work tirelessly and endlessly to bring hope to these children, and to meet with Ephraim's beloved children - yes he loves one and all, dedicated and determined - and for this he deserves the recognition and respect of the international world.

A message Ephraim sent to me in Facebook, one again excited, happy to be working with his children in the Phillipines, bringing in the troops, still finding time to say a quick hello to his friends from across the oceans. A quick discussion between us and the pictorial essay tells its own story :)

Thank you Ephraim, you rock our worlds and the worlds of thousands of children worldwide :)

During the month of November, the Philippine Consulate General dedicated much of their time to supporting the efforts of BOOKS for the BARRIOS (BftB).

On Thursday the 6th, BftB's Vice President, Ephraim Toche, gave a powerful presentation to encourage the Filipino-American community to take a stand for the barrio children of their homeland. Consul General Marciano Paynor also put forth a strong call to action and said that he will do all he can to support the global education development efforts of BOOKS for the BARRIOS.

Interview with Books for the Barrios founder, President and Executive Director, Nancy Harrington
by Marjorie Coughlan*

In 1981 Nancy Harrington and her husband Dan, founded Books for the Barrios to bring books and other resources to children in the Philippines, and to provide schools and libraries to house them. Since then, they have sent more than 10 million books, which are shipped every few weeks in 40-foot containers. Through their commitment to Book for the Barrios, they are not only saving tons of books from heading for landfill each year, but also transforming the lives and aspirations of thousands of children.

Nancy and Dan live in Concord, California.
...........................................................................................................
Can you tell us the background as to how and why you founded Books for the Barrios to provide books for children in the Philippines?

We were a US navy family stationed in the Philippines from 1981-86. Our sons were four and six years old when we first arrived there and it was a great opportunity for them to experience a different culture. We traveled all over the country to very remote areas and because I'm a teacher we would always go to the schools, where we would see that they had no resources ? and that's how we started, as a family, to seek ways to help.

Do you work in other countries?

Our primary thrust is the Philippines but when we receive really good quality books in Spanish I find people that are going to a Spanish-speaking country and I donate them; or, for example, I know of a woman who treks in Tibet and we give her books to take out there.

Who are some of the different people who get involved with Books for the Barrios?

All types of people are involved in our work. We have one part-time employee in the US and two-fulltime in the Philippines; and we have many people who volunteer for us - they are our lifeline. They coordinate deliveries of books and the work we do with schools in both countries.

We have school-age groups of children who come on field trips. Through giving practical assistance in loading up books, as well as fundraising they do through their schools, children are empowered to think globally and act locally. We try and help them realize that children all over the world are just like they are ? except when they go to school. They have families who love them, they love spaghetti and ice-cream, they fight with their brothers and sisters... The line of demarcation is when they go to school and, in the case of many Filipino children, there's nothing on the walls, very few text books; they never have any quality supplementary material.

In fact, working with children in the US is an important aspect of our work. Children and young people of all ages come and help us, from pre-school through college; we have religious groups, girl scouts and boy scouts and children from all sorts of backgrounds.

In September there is an annual ?week of caring? when businesses and companies donate their day to pack books and be involved with our work.

The Before and After photographs on your blog show just what an impact you have had in improving school facilities. Can you tell us about your vision for and involvement in the Models for Excellence schools?

We have developed 46 world-class schools, spread throughout every province in the Philippines, called Model of Excellence schools, each catering to between 500 and 3,000 children. We supply them with all their learning materials, a complete library and, when we can get enough computers, with a computer learning centre. The first school opened in 1984 and our last model school - and perhaps our last school, period, due to funding restrictions - was developed last year.

We wanted to shake up the methodology of teaching by memorization and introduce the importance of comprehension and fun in the learning process. We've introduced a meaning-centered curriculum. It's had a huge impact! To support that, we set up a teacher training programme through the Models of Excellence schools and trained 8,000 teachers over 4 years. They then took what they'd learned back to their schools and passed it on to other staff, so the effect has multiplied through the whole country.

We still follow through on pupil and staff development and work hard to develop a culture of reading ? most of the teachers grew up without reading anything. So, for example, as well as providing classroom resources, we send out professional development materials too.

What are some of the cultural awareness concerns one needs to be sensitive to when sending books from one country to another?

When we started, an official in the Philippines accused us of trying to colonize the country again and so I am personally responsible for every book that goes out there, to ensure that there can be no grounds for such concerns. We do not send any American history or biographies; and we don't send any religious books or any foreign language books. It's not a problem that all our books are in English because English is the second language there.

How often do you go to the Philippines?

We go to the Philippines every year for about 6 weeks and we travel all over the country. Sometimes we visit places unannounced; sometimes we are accompanied by security personnel down in the areas where there are terrorist cells but, up until now, we've had no problems at all. Meanwhile, we have shipments of books and materials going out in 40 foot containers every 5-6 weeks.

What are some of the particularly special moments you've experienced with children receiving books?

Every time we put a book in front of a child who's never seen a book before it's pretty amazing for we know that their life is never going to be the same. Normally many children will quit school by grade 6 but the drop-out rate is going down dramatically, especially in our schools. Often, when we donate books to children, and indeed to teachers, they break down and cry because they realize that there's somebody out there that really cares about them.

To date you have founded four floating libraries ? Could you please describe these libraries and tell us where they are and how they operate?

The floating libraries are all in a rainforest area called the Agusan Del Sur. These children had no school, nothing, and because there's a very good governor, Maria Valentina Galido Plaza, we've been able to develop four floating libraries. These are boats which provide a library service in rural areas, floating from one little village to the next.

I'll never forget our visit to Agusan Del Sur, only a year after setting up our project there. We saw such amazing results - the children writing beautiful letters and so desperate to learn.

How has the global economic downturn affected Books for Barrios?

The global economic downturn has affected us terribly. We operate on a $160,000 a year budget and we're down to $52,000 so, who knows... We still try and fundraise and get grants but we are struggling. We ask for $5 per person when the children come - and we ask them to raise that money; then we ask the schools to do little fund-raisers too. We used to hold dances to raise money but we're gettting a little old for that now!

We press on through complicated bureaucracy and typhoons and all kinds of natural disasters, of which there are many in the Philippines. We pray and we work as hard as we can because we really believe that the only way to combat conflict and terrorism is through education.

What does it mean to you to have devoted the last 28 years to Books for the Barrios?

At times, I think back to all the things that we've missed in our lives ? vacations and what my kids have not received ? but every time we go over there, we realize that this has definitely been a providential calling. It's a 24/7 situation and we know what we're doing is right.

And what does the future hold?

We don't know. We don't know how much longer we'll be able to go on. We need someone younger, with boundless energy, to come forward and take up the reins!

Before BftB became Involved...."REASONS WHY WE NEED "BOOKS FOR THE BARRIOS""

For almost four decades now we have been fighting insurgency/terrorism in this island province of Sulu. Ravaged by endless bloody conflict for various reasons, many of the basic needs of the people are left undelivered. For a long period, pacification campaigns were conducted but the problem got worse until we finally realized that we cannot solve this problem through guns and bullets. I remembered a solution done a century ago during Pershing's time here at the same place. He brought in the "Thomasites".

They were so called because they were brought in by a vessel called USS Thomas. They were educators/teachers. And things were not the same thereafter. Tausugs or Suluanos were taught how to read and write. They valued this new experience and became friendlier and receptive to development. In the long run it led to precious peace. Sulu was tamed and people were educated. This prevailed for several decades until the secessionist movement espoused by the Moro National Liberation Front came into being. That disrupted peace and chaos erupted. It made things abnormal that children were almost unable to go to school. Nobody understood the solution but fighting went on.

Until we realized we have to go back to "basics". For a generation the concept of learning was replaced by violence. The government implemented an all-out war solution. This dragged on and there was no end in sight. When I became a battalion commander in February 1999, I initiated a softer approach. We found out that rebels who surrenered clamored for education for their children since they themselves were deprived of it. When I asked them why they joind the rebellion, their simple answer was they did not have other opportunities since they were uneducated. They wanted change for their children. Hence the Marines pursued a different approach certainly less violent than war. They built schools and donated books. They became teachers following the steps of the "Thomasites" a century earlier. Tausugs came out and realized that there are no biases against them as they once perceived. Children had visions and dreamt of a brighter future.

Today this is reflected in our partnership with "Books for the Barrios Foundation". We can now pursue better a mission to give the people of Sulu a better future through education. "Books for the Barrios" spearheaded by Nancy and Dan Harrington is a rebirth of the "Thomasites" with their passionate endeavor to give the children of Sulu a bright future through the improvement of learning methods. This starts with pre-school children learning centers. Books, writing materials and toys make education more fun for them. This actually veers them away from the violence experienced at an early age. Modern techniques in child care are also implemented focusing on sanitation to good manners. By giving attention to their children's future through education, Tausug parents themselves now value a peaceful environment to give their children a better chance in life.

For the military, by following a more constructive approach attaining peace and development is at hand. Communities start to grow where once battlegrounds exist. Life grows where in the past Sulu was declared a "no man's land". Level of violence has been reduced. Children now carry books not their father's rifle. Education is the long term solution to insurgency or terrorism. Education makes people understand each other better. More books for the barrios.

A bit about TIE - Trust In Education
BRINGING EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE, AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO VILLAGES IN AFGHANISTAN.
Education when combined with health care and economic development programs provide immediate relief and are the solutions to ending cyclical poverty. All programs are implemented in partnership with the community, thereby empowering Afghan communities with control over their lives.
Trust in Education (TIE) is a grass roots, non-profit organization founded in May 2003 to provide health care, education and economic development programs in Afghanistan. An equal amount of time is devoted to educating Americans about our involvement in Afghanistan, past, present and future. TIE connects American communities and Afghan villages. Through these exchanges everyone discovers that we share more in common than not and experience the joy of making a substantial and long lasting difference in the lives of thousands.
REBUILDING AFGHANISTAN
TIE first provided funding to build a secular school for boys and girls in Lalander, Afghanistan that opened in March, 2005. "Their school" is within a 15-minute walk from home, instead of the three hours it once took to reach schools in Kabul. In March 2006, adult education courses were added thereby enabling both young and old to learn. TIE also funds classes in homes, in response to threats and actions taken by the Taliban. If we provide a safe forum they will come.
In home classes are offered during the winter when the schools are closed. Their appetite for education is insatiable.
Education is the key that unlocks all doors.
Join us in delivering education to Afghans who have had no access for too long.

"Oh What A Night" - Trust in Education Fundraising Event

Afghanistan

"Oh What A Night"

The fundraising event for Zohra's school couldn't have been better. Everyone who attended enjoyed the food, wine, and company of over 275 people interested in helping Afghanistan. It was reassuring to say the least. For you bottom l

ine folks, we raised somewhere between 60 and 65 thousand dollars that night. That's enough to tell the villagers to start building, something Nabi and I intend to do in Afghanistan this weekend.
It's great being the messenger, so long as our adversaries adhere to the principle established by Sophocles in 442 BC and reinforced later by Shakespeare in 1598 (Henry IV part II for the trivia buffs). I won't write it here. It troubles our

wives. The message by the way is more involved than start building. First there is the story of Zohra's personal quest to save money and find funding that began three years ago. That story includes numerous rejections, cynics, and skeptics along the way, including those who doubted a woman could succeed.

Then there is Sue Paulson, who upon learning of "Zohra's school" offered to organize a fundraiser. That was followed shortly by Alan Heyman and the board of Americans for Philantropy who agreed to sponsor the

event. Ambassador Jawad subsequently agreed to travel 3,000 miles to be the keynote speaker. A thousand organizational details later were solved by volunteers too numerous to list. Judgment night arrived.

Julie Haener and KTVU (Channel 2) provided excellent coverage, which can be viewed by clicking here http://www.ktvu.com/news. The stage was set and no one knew how the evening would end. Peo

ple just kept raising their hands when Alan Heyman asked for pledges. It didn't take long to realize that Zohra's dream and the dreams of over 300 Afghan girls living in Farza, had enough financial backing to give the go ahead. It was obvious that everyone there that night had embraced and now shared their dreams.

Stay tuned for follow up reports. The next report will be from Kabul. Nabi and I want to visit the villagers and meet

with as many of the girls who will be attending the school as possible. We must accomplish this while staying below the radar. Now, if I can only find a XXL burqua in Kabul. Notice how I wrote double and not triple X? Who keeps track sizes?
Everyone longs for the day we can meet and work openly together. Perhaps the greatest

Books for the Barrios adopted this school in 1995 and supply the site with full libraries in each room and a separate library and a computer learning center.

This site receives assistance from the US Special Forces Task team and the Armed Forces of the Philippines and isthe only barrio library with computers.

It is an ongoing and supreme struggle to upgrade this computer learning center - power outages are regular and occur almost daily.

The teachers are on the front lines working in this school the entire province had to suspend classes several times this year because of the rebel activity.

Michael Yon travelled throughout this area last year and noticed the troops donating books to many schools in the most dangerous areas%u2026he contacted Books for the Barrios and also posted a photo of one of the libraries%u2026he wrote so favorably about the work of Books for the Barrios and as a result, many many people contacted and donated to our "Project Of the Heart"

When Nancy Harrington read his autobiography and his other book on Iraq, she realized they wanted to honor this good man in some way and so consequently decided to name this library in his honor and also named another library in the same area in honor and memory of his best friend.

When Nancy went to these schools, met with the parents and children and told them what a hero Michael is and that he is an inspiration to them - and now to the children - to study hard and "find your passion"......

The library is totally complete with about 8,000 volumes of books and educational learning materials like games, puzzles, and consumable art materials.all the teachers attend a yearly training in the Thinking , Meaning, Centered Curriculum.all of these things make this one of the best schools in the Philippines.

Michael Yon is an American author, independent reporter, and blogger. He was embedded with the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment (Deuce Four) of the 25th Infantry Division in Mosul, Iraq until the end of its deployment in September 2005.

While researching on Our NPO Books for the Barrios, which is a Project from the Heart, a passion, a way of life for those who work around the clock to make a difference, providing educational material, feeding schemes, teaching supplies and teaching the teachers, I came across this pictorial essay of Michael's stay in the Phillipines. It is as a result of his and other continuned efforts in these war-torn areas that the children in these war-torn areas are able to be honoured by naming a library in honour of htis great man, reporter, humanitarian who reports from the front lines and Tells it Like it is.

Dear Reader, I am back in Afghanistan.

There is progress on many fronts, but in sum, we are still losing the war at an increasing rate. All is not hopeless, but it's not looking good. The fighting promises to be far more deadly for our troops here than we ever saw in Iraq. The big media has done an abysmal job of covering the latest fighting. Yes, there are many stories from Afghanistan, but if you look at the bylines, many are filed from places like Kabul. When you see "Kabul," think "Saigon" or "Green Zone" with hotels and bars.

I'm heading back to combat and will be right there, up close, in the middle like usual. The risks are severe and expenses such as insurance skyrocket when in combat. I can maintain this pace for long periods, but only if you have my back. Nobody else does. Your support is crucial to this front-line reporting. This site accepts zero advertisement. If you want hardcore, frontline reporting, stay tuned and please support this mission by making a direct contribution. Without your support, this mission will end.

Thank you for helping to bring untold stories from the struggles for Afghanistan, Iraq, the Philippines and elsewhere. Thank you and God bless. Your Writer, Michael Yon

The mission of BOOKS for the BARRIOS is to strengthen public elementary school education worldwide, equal access to quality education to all children, most especially the disadvantaged children.

International Education : Learn about how we collect an ship educational material, set up Model-Of-Excellence Schools, and provide needed educational training for rural educators.

Field Trip : See how we involve U.S. children in the process of helping their overseas counterparts through educational field trips.

Environmental : We help sustain the global and U.S. environment by diverting at least 700,000 pounds of valuable books and learning tools heading to U.S. landfills yearly.

Global Development : We offer consulting services for replicating our model in U.S. cities and developing countries, and our Global Pupils' E-mail Program has nearly 40,000 participants.

Post-Conflict Reconstruction : We work closely with American military combat forces in conflict areas by sharing our resources to support their local humanitarian aid projects.
