Funny and Wonderful Stories From A Famous Naturalist

An internationally renowned naturalist and author, Gerald Durrell was a funny, smart writer who published thirty three books about his childhood on Corfu, his Zoo on Jersey, and his many amazing trips into the far corners of the world collecting wildlife. I grew up reading his books, and I attribute at least part of my interest in wildlife, and the fact I recognise many obscure animals, to the many creatures he introduced me to. He is one of the few authors that my entire family sought out and collected unquestioningly, from the ages of about eight to adulthood.

Whether you enjoy animal anecdotes, wildlife themed travel stories, meeting an incredible array of characters (both human and not), conservation triumphs and tragedies, tales of Corfu and eclectic families, or trips behind the scenes at zoos, Gerald Durrell's books span his entire life from UK to Corfu, childhood pets to keeping his zoo afloat, as well as a couple of fiction books, including the children's book The Fantastic Flying Journey (another childhood favourite).

He is still one of my favourite writers, and while my family managed to own all his books between us, I'm happily collecting them all again for my own personal library. His zoo is still going strong, and involved in many major conservation efforts, such as releasing back into the wild the offspring of highly endangered species that Gerald Durrell himself once collected.

Money from his books goes back to funding the zoo and its conservation efforts. So not only are they worth buying in themselves, but the money goes back to something worthwhile. Jersey Zoo is unique in that it is dedicated to captive breeding programs of endangered species, and does not house any other species.

This page is a guide to his books, organised both by content, type and by publication date. For more about his legacy and conservation work, see the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and for further reading about him, the zoo and the people he inspired, see Books About Gerald Durrell and His Legacy of Conservation.

What Kinds of Books Did Gerald Durrell Write?

From children's books to autobiographical anecdotes of wildlife and travel

The Fantastic Flying Journey

Nonfiction
The majority of Gerald Durrell's books were autobiographical, documenting either his early family life or his conservation work and collecting trips. While they are probably embellished and edited to some degree, they are generally considered accurate (and even got him into a little trouble with his family!). He was a keen observer and scrupulous note taker from a very young age, and used these many notes to write books years later.

He also wrote a couple of natural history books, and a series of technical essays, as well as a large number of magazine articles and book reviews.

Fiction
He wrote three novels, and several stories for children and young adults, as well as a small assortment of short stories.

His work was usually illustrated, either lavishly in his children's picture books, or by black and white sketches of animals, from a variety of illustrators.

Writers Like Gerald Durrell...
If you like Gerald Durrell, you would probably enjoy books by James Herriot, Laurie Lee and Bill Bryson, and David Attenborough's documentaries.

Who Was Gerald Durrell?

Gerald Durrell: Conservationist and Animal Observer

An eclectic handful of Gerald Durrell's books from my bookshelfGerald Durrell was born in India in 1925, lost his father young and moved back to the UK with his mother, two older brothers and older sister, and the whole family headed out to sunny Corfu when he was ten. There he indulged his lifelong obsession with nature, keeping an enormous variety of pets and constantly observing and learning from the world around him. He was to continue this passion, and keen observational habits, into the rest of his life. Forced back to England by the second World War, a teenaged Gerald Durrell was forced to accept that keeping large animals was not practical in a suburban family home, and he pursued experience in a zoo, to allow him to go on collecting expeditions.

Gerald Durrell:
The Authorized Biography

Then followed many years of wildlife collecting trips around the world, in which we meet hundreds of incredible species of all sizes and during which time he became increasingly dissatisfied with the state of zoos. At last, he founded his own zoo, based on the principles of conservation, education and research.

He began to publish his stories in magazines and radio broadcasts, in later years setting out to publish actual books. He actually hated writing and wrote mostly to fund his collecting trips and his zoo - which he set up to be one of the first real conservation orientated zoos in the world, at a time when most zoos were of the dreadful concrete box and no breeding programme variety.

The subtle difference between us is that he loves writing and I don't. To me it's simply a way to make money which enables me to do my animal work, nothing more. (in comparison to his brother, Lawrence Durrell, a famous writer).

Rosy Is My Relative

But his love for animals, almost all animals (famously, he only ever encountered one or two species he couldn't bring himself to like), shines through.

Unfortunately he died in 1995. His last book was The Aye-Aye and I: A Rescue Mission in Madagascar, published in 1992. His humour, insight and activism probably had the greatest impact on conservation that any one person could have, not only through the species he personally saved, but the people he inspired and trained - the 'Durrell's Army' - and the awareness raised through the vast number of people around the world who have picked up his books.

Autobiographical Books by Publish Date

A full list of his autobiographies organised in order of publication

The Whispering Land

This is a chronological list of all his published autobiographies. He did not necessarily publish them in the order that they occurred, and some books feature anecdotes from several time periods.

Are you looking for a Zoo story or a fiction novel?
If you're looking for a certain time period in his life, or a specific type of story (e.g. setting up his zoo) then keep reading to the categories below, which are organised by chronological content, rather than published date. You will also find his fiction and other miscellaneous works after the autobiographical books.

Availability, Reprints and Format
Many books were only published in the UK, with a few being republished in the USA, often under a slightly different name. Several titles have recently been republished, but most are only to be found second hand. They have almost all been reprinted at least once, originally as tiny paperbacks photos of animals on the front, then with cartoonish covers, later as respectable hardbacks. Some titles have been reprinted five times - or more, if we count audio and ebook versions!

How to Shoot an Amateur Naturalist

Kindle ebooks: Almost the entire backlist has recently been republished for Kindles (current exceptions on Amazon.com are The Whispering Land, The Garden of the Gods (which is included in The Corfu Trilogy though), How to Shoot an Amateur Naturalist , Durrell in Russia and The Best of Gerald Durrell. Many of Gerald Durrell's books are also available to download as audiobooks from Audible Audio [download on Amazon.co.uk here]. Please note that the list of available ebooks varies between Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, and that the kindle link isn't always present on the book's product page (so you'll have to search Amazon for it, though I've tried to provide links to the UK ones which are harder to find).

The links lead to either Amazon UK or US, depending where you are reading this page from and what is available.

The Corfu Trilogy

Gerald Durrell's childhood on Corfu and family life

My Family and Other Animals

From 1935 to 1939, the Durrell family escaped from England and emigrated to sunny Corfu, an island off the coast of Greece. Here a young Gerald Durrell raomed wild, collecting everything from geckoes to birds, met many strange characters and was tutored by the scholar, poet, doctor and naturalist Theodore Stephanides, who became an inspiration and a mentor to Gerald in later life.

This period is covered in the three books My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts, and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods (which were later republished in one book as The Corfu Trilogy).

While the first two books are roughly chronological, the last book (also published as Fauna and Family) is actually a miscellaneous collection of all the stories that didn't fit into the first two books.

The first two are the most successful, if only because they're better known, and the best selling My Family and Other Animals was later made into a television series and a film by the BBC (which is worth watching).

The Corfu Trilogy

The first story in Fillets of Plaice is also set in Corfu.

Early Collecting Expeditions

Adventures around the world collecting animals for zoos

Overloaded Ark
(Faber Fiction Classics)

From 1946 to 1957, Gerald Durrell went out on wildlife collecting expeditions to places as varied as Africa, Madagascar, and Patagonia. He was generally broke, surviving on grants, and later the royalties from his books (which he started writing during this time).

He sold the animals to zoos, and had very high standards of care for collecting specimens, which increased his costs, but he also became increasingly experienced and respected. During this time he also married his first wife, Jacquie, who appears in several of his books.

Later Collecting Expeditions

From 1959 to 1990, Gerald Durrell's expeditions were for his own zoo or were filmed for documentaries

Catch Me a Colobus

The 1957 expedition was to collect animals for his own zoo, which he hoped to establish once he had enough specimens.

All the expeditions after 1957 were carried out to support his zoo, and were usually aimed at rescuing highly endangered species. Gerald Durrell was also part of an increasing number of filmed expeditions and conservation programs.

Stories From the Zoo

Establishing and running Jersey Zoo and early work at Whipsnade Zoo

A Zoo in My Luggage

In 1939, the Durrells returned to London because of WW2. During this time, Gerald Durrell worked in an aquarium, a pet store, on a farm for the war effort, and finally in Whipsnade Zoo as part of a deliberate attempt to gain experience before going on collecting expeditions, which would then allow him to set up his own zoo.

His time at Whipsnade was invaluable, both for his many encounters with various characters (human and not!) and experience gained, but because it showed him some of the downsides of current zoo practices. The book Beasts in My Belfry was written years later, presumably from the copious notes the young Gerry took at every opportunity. At the age of 21 he received an inheritance allowing him to fund his first collecting expedition, which led to many more trips, covered in the books listed above.

Menagerie Manor

Over time, Gerald Durrell became increasingly upset with the quality of zoo care and their lack of conservation effort, and finally decided to establish his own zoo. His final collecting trip in 1957 was to collect specimens for his new zoo, which would be dedicated to conservation, for learning about species and breeding them, and not simply for 'show'. Unfortunately, setting up a new zoo comes with a lot of zoning problems, and he eventually had to look outside of the UK.

By chance and luck, he found and rented Les Augres Manor on the island of Jersey (an island between France and England) and opened his zoo in 1959, along with another collecting expedition to South America.

He established the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust in 1963, and the Trust bought the Manor from its owner in 1971. In 1979 his wife divorced him due to his alcoholism and stress, and he married his second wife Lee that same year. Lee was a co-author on many of his later books.

The Talking Parcel

Gerald Durrell wrote four novels, one for adults, one for young adults and two for children, all strongly based on his experiences with animals and with conservation messages. His adult book, Rosie Is My Relative, is a madcap story of a literally elephantine inheritance in the heart of England, and a hapless young man, and reads a lot like his autobiographical books (with the exception of the actual events) in style, wry humour, and close observation of how animals behave.

Short Stories

Books containing short fiction and essays by Gerald Durrell

Fillets of Plaice

Gerald Durrell published a handful of short story books, which are generally a collection of fiction, usually of a Roald Dahl-like bent, and nonfictional anecdotes from across his lifetime, as well as a few stories that may be autobiographical, or may be fictional. With Durrell, it can often be hard to tell!

Children's Picture Books

From board books to illustrated stories

The Fantastic Flying Journey

The Fantastic Flying Journey was a childhood favourite of mine, and has been republished with at least three different covers! The full page illustrations are gorgeous, though I was always a little confused as to whether it was a novel or a picture book. It was more of an illustrated novel. I have never seen the time travelling sequel, The Fantastic Dinosaur Adventure, but it was also illustrated by Graham Percy.
Suitable for 7-11 year olds

Keeper and Toby the Tortoise are both preschool level, and were less successful. While the illustrations are, again, lovely, Gerald Durrell's informational writing style doesn't translate into children's books very well. He also wrote a series of board books called Puppy Tales, which did work very well.

The stories are sweet, well written and suitable for 6-8 year olds.
