Best Childrens Books - agreed upon by parents, children and librarians

Cherished childrens books - some classic stories, some new, but all loved. Every once in a while you come across that one of a kind book - the one that is pulled out every day and read over and over and over again. That still makes that special child smile as he hears it, and that doesn't make mom or dad groan when it is the book of choice for storytime.

As a mom of two boys, I have found those books hard to find, and so wanted to share with other parents or grandparents. Whether you are looking for a good book worth adding to your library, or as a gift to that special some one, this page will provide ideas and summaries for some of the most favored books by all children - not just mine!

My criteria for a book to make it online here is this: it must be a book loved by both children and both parents, even when read four times a day for two weeks straight! It must make the children smile or giggle, and must be one I would consider investing my money into.

Criteria to make it on this lens:

With enjoyable rhyming and adorable pictures, this book illustrates a common fear a child has when their mommy leaves the room and dark settles in. This charming book will become a favorite in your childs' library and a perfect gift for any child.

We picked this book up off our library's "100 books to read before Kindergarten" shelf - and it quickly became the first book that climbed onto my lap before bedtime!

Monkey and Me

Monkey and Me

Amazon Price: $8.97 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

A cute book where a girl and her toy monkey pretend and act out different monkeys, leaving your child guessing what the next page holds. Whether your child likes to sit quietly and watch the simple and enjoyable drawings, or leaping around the floor, imitating the animal as well, they will be begging you to read it over and over again!

My one year old and three year old sons want me to read it over and over again. A very simple book, I imagine it a good book for a beginner reader to read.

Harold and the Purple Crayon

by Crockett Johnson

I loved this book as a child, and now I love watching my sons' face as I read this imaginative story about a boy taking a moonlight walk in his pajamas, with only his purple crayon as he creates a world around him. Drawing landmarks so he doesn't get lost, pie when he gets hungry, this young boy will draw you into his world with the utmost fascination.

A classic childrens book that is a must have for any library, I appreciate that it is a longer book to introduce my three year old son to enjoy larger books - which he does in this case, with great interest!

Where the Wild Things Are

by Maurice Sendak

An award winning book - not only in stature, but in my opinion, in the eyes of parents and children. A young boy gets into some mischief and gets sent to his room without any supper. Like any imaginative boy's room would, his starts growing trees and turns into a jungle. With an adventure and some scary hairy beasts - which even with silly eyes and pointy teeth, they seem to linger between scary and humourous, this book will have your child giggling and waiting in fascination for the next event to unfold.

"Each word has been carefully chosen and the simplicity of the language is quite deceptive."
