Grandma loves books and toys!
The latest rage for our 5 and 6 year old grandchildren is a toy called PixO's. You can even download your own FREE Barack Obama PixOs template and make the President out of colorful beads! PixOs are fun and creative, especially on dreary weather days! The children are always proud of their unique creations!
You will also notice that there are very few electronic toys. We try to focus on toys that require physical action and imagination. If your family is creative and craft-oriented, you might want to build your own toys!

I love Fisher Price dollhouses, don't you?
Every child who walks in our door heads straight for the Fisher Price dollhouse! I found it at a yard sale a few years ago. It came with tons of furniture and people. We have the mommy and daddy, grandparents, children and babies. We also have puppies and dog houses. The children love the little birds' nest on the chimney and the mailbox. They notice every little thing. Often I put all of the furniture in a box, and then the next time they visit, we redecorate all of the rooms! And of course, create some new stories!

Yo-Yos and Hula Hoops - fun with the oldest toys on earth!
-
In the Phillippines, yo-yo translates as "come back". Some people believe that the yo-yo was created to be used as a weapon. That theory is not true. Pedro Flores, who was originally from the Phillippines, started selling the toy in the Uni...

Dogs - Toys, Books and Movies

Children seem to love all animals naturally-- dogs, cats, horses, rabbits -- but especially dogs. Dogs and puppies! They love to read about them, play with them, chase and be chased by them, play with pretend models, sleep with soft fluffy ones or re...

Horses - Books and Toys for Children

We begin our love of horses with a rocking horse. Isn't a rocking horse one of the first toys we buy for our children? Humans and horses have enjoyed each other for centuries. So it is natural when our little ones want to play with stuffed horses, re...

Trains, trains, trains! Fun for all!

Do you remember your first train set? I certainly do. Mine was a wind-up Mickey Mouse train. It was a gift from Santa. We moved that year to Clemson, SC, and somehow the train got lost. I can remember being so upset that my dad drove me back to Ware...

- Ah, Grandma JJ -- some great recommendations for books and toys -- my grandma Julia Nagy loved the classics -- mostly card games! You know, come to think of it, I didn't see her reading a lot -- she was mostly crocheting afghans, doilies, and table runners. Or, doing some embroidery.

- When your grands are a little older, you can introduce them to the Happy Hollisters! I recently scored an almost complete set at a yard sale. My mom, although I honestly don't know how she managed to afford it, enrolled me in the book-a-month plan and I used to await the package with the newest Happy Hollister book with the anticipation usually reserved for Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny! I have been reading the series as an adult, and I find that they are still delightful stories.
Other favorites of mine would include the Anne of Green Gables series, The Five Little Peppers series, and don't forget the wonderful Boxcar Children! The Wizard of Oz books are delightful and there's so much MORE than what the film shows.
Oh, my ... there are so many wonderful books out there.
The favorite "toy" at my house has always been the "cut, color, and paste" box. Hand-made and hand-decorated, it's simply a cardboard box loaded up with things you can cut, color, and paste! Fav'd lens!

- Joan you're absolutely right about non-electronic toys, but to use toys and games that require physical action and imagination. Our 3 year old quadruplet grandbabies and their 4 year old big brother LOVE playing with blocks, little cars, play dough which they "build" into roads, snakes, balls, and all sorts of things. In the garage they use boxes to make bee hives (their parents have a honey bee farm) and are busy little bees themselves!! GREAT LENS - 5***** for you!

- Some of my favorite toys are on my Nurturing Imagination lens. Specifically, we love dress-up play and anything that requires making up stories as we go, even Legos. (I say "we," but I mean when my kids were little. No grands - yet!) Nice lens!

- I love this lens, Joan. A great list of books, too. Goodnight Moon is at the top of my list. In fact, when my 27 year old daughter came home one day this past week to move some more of her things to her new home, the first thing she grabbed was her books with Goodnight Moon on top.
She had to sit down and read it all the way through right then.... Such great memories this book list invokes. Thanks for creating it, Grandma JJ!
Five stars for sure!
