Surrounding the Glade winds the Maze, a complex series of walls that shift every day, making it virtually unsolvable. Shortly after Thomas's arrival, a new delivery comes to the Glade- a girl. I Am Number Four

by Pittacus Lore

I Am Number Four (Lorien Legacies)

Amazon Price: (as of 05/21/2012)Buy Now

This is a fast-paced sci-fi novel with underlying environmental protection themes. "I Am Number Four" follows the alien John (or Number Four) as he attempts to blend in to the high school crowd while at the same time avoiding the vicious Mogadorians, who are out to take his life. I enjoyed reading this novel, though I am usually not a big fan of sci-fi, the author made the story as relatable as possible. His action descriptions could use a bit of work, but if your teen likes action, they're sure to like "I Am Number Four". Read my full review here.

But don't let that turn you out. These trolls are cool- no hairy feet or ugly warts, they are human in nature and only want to live a simple life with the earth. When teens say, "I hate reading!"...

...they just haven't found the right teenage books!

"This book is so boring!" "I don't like reading!" and "Can't I just play video games?" are all sayings I've heard more times than I would have liked as a volunteer tutor and mentor in a Seattle-based middle school. There are many reasons why children and especially teens avoid picking up books, but an innate hatred of literature usually isn't the root cause of their displeasure. Today, I will outline some commonly-found explanations as to why a teen doesn't like to read.

The Wrong Level

Our public education system pushes standards, whether in test scores or English syllabi. But teens develop at wildly different rate; no two readers are a like. Sometimes, teachers or other adults in a student's life push books on them that simply befuddle the student. When a teen cannot understand the material that someone gives them, chances are she will end up frustrated and will quit (wouldn't we all?) You can't give a student a book that requires a higher level of comprehension in hopes that a student will "grow into" the book. Instead, give a teen literature that they inherently enjoy reading. In turn, this pleasure will encourage them to read more, which will intrinsically boost her comprehension.

On the other hand, a teen may not be challenged enough. When a class is fascinated by "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" but your child finished the series in two days, perhaps he needs to choose more complex texts.

The Twilight Zone

Unfortunately, I'm not discussing the classic TV program when I talk about "The Twilight Zone." Today, books like "Twilight" have become so popularized that teens believe only novels that have sold over 10 million copies are worth reading. These teen books are great gateways into a myriad of books that share similar themes and literary merits. However, because middle school and high school are times of finding acceptance among one's peers, many students are reluctant to deviate from the norm when it comes to "nerdy" subjects like reading. Often times suggesting book lists that start with mega-popular series but then divulge into other, more substantial pieces correct this unfortunate phenomenon.

"Reading isn't cool!"

The ultimate argument from your teen: reading is just too lame to bother with. This is a hard one to combat because, as I outlined earlier, many teens will only do what their peers do. Many times a school populace isn't hooked on books is because of the school's required reading. Is your student's teacher handing out the overdone and mind-numbingly boring "A Separate Peace" or the urban, kid-smart series "Bluford High"? Perhaps a teen hasn't been exposed to literature that is relevant to their culture. But give him the right teen books and he will realize that he can relate to literature, too. Here I will review enjoyable books that are both classically appreciated as well as modern and, I hope, "cool".

In my lens, I hope that I can help teens discover the pure, unadulterated joy of reading. Feel free to ask me to review certain teen books or for particular suggestions for a genre! Thank you!

Great suggestions! We'll print them out and take them with us the next time we go to the library. My son read The Giver in class and really enjoyed it. I would also recommend The Obsidian Pebble by RA Jones (http://www.rajonesauthor.com/), especially if your kids like Harry Potter or mysteries!

This is a great list. All of these books sound so interesting! I read almost all the time when I was a teen, but I read "weird" stuff - Naked Lunch, On the Road, Jane Eyre, Catcher in the Rye, Cannery Row - all of my own volition. Oh, and I read Crime and Punishment as a class assignment, but I absolutely LOVED it! No, I was not the typical teen. :-)
