Boo! It's a Planet-friendly Fun Filled Halloween
Still Halloween, But Healthier, More Frugal and Planet-Friendly
Halloween is meant to be enjoyed, but does it have to be so trashy? Does it have to be so unhealthy? Does it have to be so expensive? No!
Frankly, I'm tired of seeing the trash (candy wrappers, streamers, torn or broken costume parts, actual trash and so on) all over the streets and on the front lawns the night and the next morning after Halloween. Are people really this messy and inconsiderate or do they not realize where the trash ends up?
Unfortunately, the trash on the streets isn't the only problem. Every year more resources are needed to drive kids around to trick or treat or to make new costumes, new Halloween baskets, more candy... only to be thrown in the trash after one use. Pesticides and other harmful chemicals are used to grow large pumpkins for carving only to be carved and then thrown away.
But Halloween does not have to be this wasteful. If more people reused, or bought greener alternatives, or just changed certain habits, we could help reduce the negative impact Halloween celebrations often have on the environment. In addition, did you know that by switching to planet-friendly alternatives for Halloween we could help the planet as well as save money and live longer healthier lives?

Green Those Halloween Costumes

One great way to cut down on Halloween waste is to use hand-me down costumes. Do you have neighbors, family members, friends or freecycle members that can hand down a costume they have used in the past to your children or you (if you dress up to). Not only does this reduce waste, it saves you money.
Another option is the old fashioned way- make your own costume out of recycled material. There are hundreds of ideas online.
Also don't forget to pass on your costumes to other children or adults so they can reduce on Halloween waste.
Ideas For Greener Halloween Costumes
Look around your home. What do you have that can be turned into an eco-friendly costume? How creative are you? Can you sew? Yes! No! Okay can you cut? Can You glue? Use your imagination search online for some ideas. I've seen broken umbrellas turned into wings. I have seen broken and old dolls sewn together to make odd costumes. I've seen a golf ball, some tennis rackets and dark pantyhose turned into a mouse head. What can you do? The ideas are endless and not as hard as you may think. Add you ideas below.

Organic Pumpkin

If carving pumpkins is a huge tradition in your family buy an local or organic pumpkin. Carve and cut it as you need. Set the seeds aside and eat them, dry them and set them out (along with the pumpkin goo) for the birds to eat, or plant a few in the ground to grow your own pumpkins for next year.
To eat them bake them at 300° with light seasoning (salt is good enough for me). When they toast slightly pull them out, let them cool and then eat them.
When October is over add your carved pumpkin to your compost bin. If you don't have a compost bin you can start one. Rake up the fall leaves. Put them in a pile back in the corner and add you pumpkin. Every could of days turn it.
If you don't have time for a compost bin you can give your pumpkin to someone you know that does have a compost bin. I would be happy to take you pumpkins.
You can also just sit the pumpkin outside with bird food inside for the birds.
One last option. Leave your pumpkin sitting outside as is and watch it slowly decay. If you have kids this is a great science experience. Take pictures every few days and after a few weeks show the pictures to your kids side by side.

Trick Or Treat Totes, Baskets and More

Do you really have to buy another plastic pumpkin bucket for trick or treating? No! Any tote, pillow case, basket, etc... you have around the house will make good trick or treat carriers. Decorate it a bit with the Halloween to give it a bit of a Halloween flare.
Also avoid using plastic bags for your trick or treating rounds. Aside from their negative effect on the environment they are not very durable. They catch on items and tear. Or the weight of too much candy can tear them too. What a mess!

Halloween Safety
Whether you Halloween is planet-friendly or not be careful. Take caution before eating candy. Watch out for cars driving along trick or treaters. Avoid knocking on doors with porch lights turned off. Go with your kids!

Eco-Halloween No Fun?!
Some people think having an Eco-Halloween will strip celebrating Halloween of all the fun. Do you think this is true? Voice your opinion below.
Are eco-Halloween's boring

We have had tons more fun when the costumes were made from odds and ends items. Then I just buy the needed accessories. It is important that we teach our kids that each car trip increases our dependence on foreign oil. How can they change things if they aren't encouraged to make the right choices?

I say NO! Being eco friendly is a very positive thing, and teaching children at a young age is very important especially at Halloween.

oh we never had store-bought costumes. we always wore costumes we figured out ourselves. Mama did not figure them out. We did -- with old clothes and whatever we could find. and yes, we had tons of fun! we did not have anything special to collect our candy in, either. we used paper sacks -- and sometimes we decorated them with crayons.

Walk Instead of Drive

Take your kids trick or treating by foot. Cut down on car pollution and walk. Besides it is healthier to walk and in my opinion it is more enjoyable. It is also safer. If a stranger tries to pull your kid in you will get to him a lot quicker on foot because you are closer and other trick or treating cars will not be in your way.

Halloween Decor

Like most tips on this lens- reuse what you have first. What ever decor you used last year use it again, but change it up a bit. It gets a little boring seeing the same 4 or 5 ghost in your front yard every single years. How about this year you add 1 or 2 scarecrow (made with old tattered clothes and fallen leaves) and then paint the ghost so that it really looks scary or friendly this year. Either would be nice. While you are at it add a few solar powered Halloween lights like these or whatever you like.
If you don't have decor get some from thrift stores, resale shops, Goodwill, family and friends that are bored of their old decorations. Also turn to freecycle and Craigslist for more free Halloween decor possibilities.
If you are having a party use recycled or sustainable napkins, dishes, utensils, party favors, etc.

What About the Candy?

Don't worry I didn't forget about the candy. There are eco- alternatives for candy too. There are organic chocolates, treats, cookies etc. Some, not all come at a high prices so search around for good deals. Just because they are organic doesn't mean they are healthy candies, it just means they are healthier for the kids and planet-friendly.
Like I mentioned earlier you also have the option of handing out other sorts of eco-treats (pencils, notepads, stickers, etc). Some kids like the younger kids will appreciate this. Some older kids will too, but of course some will be disappointed. Aren't they disappointed about everything at that age though! :)
Handing Out Candy?
Light up your porch with a solar powered porch light. As for the candy, hand out organic candy or opt for something a little cheaper like cute eco-friendly pencils, stickers, notepads, etc. Shop for these items before school starts for a good deal.

- Lots of good points in your lens. One year my daughter was "Draculina" and we had gone to the thrift store and bought a long black dress and coat. The items were inexpensive, and she had tons of fun. Another year, my one son was a swamp monster. We colored him green and stuck weeds all over him!

- As a kid my mom made all our Halloween costumes and then they ended up in our huge trunk full of dress up stuff so rarely did they get worn just once. Great ideas on this Squidoo page to accomplish AND enjoy your Halloween without all the fuss and expense.

- I am a firm believer in trying to use as much of the things we have. Costumes especially. I do not think I ever purchased a costume for my brother and sister, we always created them at the house for our halloween parties! It was so much fun. Good lens!
