Boost your success in 2011
Boost your success in 2011. Do you want a bigger paycheck? Maybe you need the comfort of not having your name added on the lay-off list. Think about yourself as cruise ship that hits a rough storm in the middle of the ocean. What will you do? You must be prepared to change course, which means having a plan B. Poor planning could have your ship running out of steam in the middle of the ocean. Then again, what if everything is going okay, but you need better than okay to weather the rough waters of a recession. Let us sail forward with some tips to boost your success in 2011.
“Think about where you can diversify your skills to offer more value to the team.”
Diversify. Ask if you could cross train into a position that needs support. A better range of skills could work in your favor if your office co-workers are a custom to believing in the "stay in your lane" type of an attitude. Think about where you can diversify your skills to offer more value to the team. Your manager should be pleased to find that you have taken the initiative to educate yourself so you can help in under performing areas.
“Yes, this contradicts diversify, every office is different so understand your options.”
Train others. Volunteer to provide training to new hire employees. If you work in an environment that has a Tier 1, 2, & 3 show your support by offering to train the lower tier. Show everyone your interest in the company, as well as your willingness to take a leadership position.
Specialize. Could you be spread out to thin? Working on too many projects could cause errors and rework. Become an expert where others lack information in order to make you indispensable in the office. Yes, this contradicts diversify, every office is different so understand your options.

“Employers trust and feel more confident in promoting people who are certified.”
Manage. If you have little or no previous management experience, ask your manager how you could help. Could you learn how to schedule meetings and prepare your manager for success while taking on more management tasks? You could combine your work experience with some on-line training and education and rise above your competition?
Get certified. Certification gives you credibility, industry recognition, and best alternate for experience thus helps you get a job with no experience across many career fields. Employers trust and feel more confident in promoting people who are certified.

“Your boss may not know that you were thinking of advancing your career.”
Ask. Asking for what you want is the simplest way to get good advice and know where you stand with your manager. Set up a meeting or arrange a lunch meeting and ask what you can do to grow and excel. You will be presented with some ideas and learn more about your strengths and weaknesses as an employee. From there, you should have a clearer picture of how to improve. Your boss may not know that you were thinking of advancing your career.
Job Search. If you find yourself going nowhere fast with your current company, keep sailing to find a better job that meets your ambition and ability. Be careful how you exit your job just in case your manager realizes your worth and creates the position you should have had all along. See article on Safely Transition to a new Opportunity.
