March 2007

OUTDOORS 3. WISTERIA. Wisteria plants will soon by forming flower buds. Aim to prune twice a year, during maximum growth in August and again in February. Prune shoot back to flowering spurs on a main shoot framework. A good feed with a flower boost such as Triplantanol works wonders
TOP TIP....Always purchase named varieties which will most commonly be grafted. If you require lots of flowers always select W.floribunda or W. venusta varieties and grow them in a sunny aspect. W.sinensis should only be selected if you require a giant vigorous plant. They are well suited to climb up large trees.

INDOORS 3. EUPHORBIA MILII HYBRIDS . The flowering Crown of Thorns makes a spectacular winter flowering plant that repeat flowers for many months in a sunny room or conservatory. The bright colours are long lasting and the plants are very easy to look after. They are thought to be lucky by many Chinese.
TOP TIP.... For sheer spectacle choose Thai hybrids also known as Poysean. These are worth seeking out from specialist grower and are sometimes offered on ebay.

OUTDOORS 4. SPRING FLOWERS.To achieve perennial flowers go for flowering shrubs and mix them with colourful foliage. Rhododendrons and Acers make a good choice.
TOP TIP.... If you choose the species R.Yakushimanum you can expect flowers in both spring and autumn,

INDOORS 4. CACTUS. Cactus flower well if you give them the correct sunshine, feeding and suitable winter rest. Choose a small plant in flower, so you know what it looks like and then grow it on. Do not be tempted by plants out of flower as some will remain so for many years.
TOP TIP.... for really good flowering feed your cactus in the growing season. It is myth that cactus need to be starved, nurseries feed their plants to increase their size and then induce a flowering cycle.

February 2007

  1. February 2007.

OUTDOORS 1. TEMPERATE GRASSES. For those that have enjoyed the winter
displays of Miscanthus, Panicums and other summer flowering grasses, now is the
time to clean the clumps and remove the old growth and flower stems. Use shears or secateurs.
TOP TIP....we use cable powered hedge trimmers. You can easily cut into the clumps of grass to remove the old growth and achieve a nice flat 'mat'for regrowth. Then lightly rake over
the clump to loosen the old debris.

INDOORS 1. PHALAENOPSIS ORCHIDS. The beautiful moth orchids should have
provided months of pleasure since purchase. New buds flower form at the end of
the flower spike. However a time comes when you have to think of the plant. Conventional
wisdom suggests cutting back down the flower stem to above a lower flower node
    for re-sprouting.
TOP TIP....while your plant is flowering leaves will not be expanding and roots will be growing slowly. Give your plant a boost by cutting the flower spike completely off. With good feeding
and conditions you plant will respond by starting to grow and your new flower spike should be even better and larger in a few months time. You should aim to grow your plants first and flowers second.

OUTDOORS 2. HELLEBORUS HYBRIDS. Hybrid hellebores have a habit of covering their flowers with leaves. Stop this by removing all last years leaves to show off the flowers to perfection. You can recognise the old leaves as they are often damaged and large.
TOP TIP....Pollinate some of your best hybrids before the bees do it for you. Then collect the 'special seed' and scatter them where you wish them to grow and flower. You then will get some of the flowers you want in future years.
INDOORS 2. INDOOR FOLIAGE PLANTS. Most foliage plants have their origins in low light warm climates. These plants respond to elevated temperature and need feeding during the warm winter. Growth can sometimes be greater than during the summer months. Choose a high potash based (blossom boosting) fertiliser for controlled growth.
TOP TIP.... Give your plants a boost now in early spring by changing to a high nitrogen feed for a few weeks
