Boppy Nursing Pillow: Uses, Deals, and Alternatives

When it comes to nursing pillow, Boppy offers cute and comfortable options that rival all others. The Boppy nursing pillow makes a great addition to any breastfeeding parent.

What is a Nursing Pillow Good For?
Nursing pillows allow a baby to be properly laid down for feeding. This means the parent no longer needs to use one arm to support the baby's head, leaving it free to take care of other needs the baby may have.

Boppy Pillow with Slipcover - Lots O Dots

Review

The pillow provides a lot of comfort for a newborn's head when feeding. It's small, and fluffy, and carries a cute design. Unlike regular pillows, the bendy design keeps the baby in place and secure. The only downside is that as the baby grows, the pillow will end up too small or flattened and another one will be needed.

Other Uses of Nursing Pillows

With a little imagination, a nursing pillow can do so much more

Nursing pillows do more than free up a parent's hands. Being propped up can help reduce acid reflux, a common issue in young babies. Additionally, when the baby gets old enough to learn to sit, the pillow can be used as a balancing mechanism. The baby can be placed with the pillow, while the u shape helps the baby remain straight. Lastly, pillows like these make great obstacles for babies to go over and under and thus build muscle mass.

The Nursing Pillow At Home

a little personal tidbit about various ways to use a nursing pillow

Roman Goddess of Breastfeeding

Buy at AllPosters.com

As mentioned in my bio, I am the sister, and designated babysitter, of a baby boy. Because of this, I did not breastfeed, but my mother did. She received a nursing pillow as a present and found various uses for it. She did learn it was for breastfeeding (she didn't have one when I was a baby), and figured out how to position the baby on the pillow in order to feed him with more movability. However, my baby brother kept growing very quickly - far more quickly than he was supposed to. Eventually it got to the point that it was very easy for her to reach him without the pillow, but his abrupt movements sometimes caused her to move in ways that hurt her neck. So what did my mother do? She started using the nursing pillow as a neck pillow. Because of the U shape, she grew in love with it and even started using it on the rocking chair while trying to get him to fall asleep.

Once my little brother started to sit, the nursing pillow also became a sitting toy. We'd position him inside the pillow to help him balance himself. He had this habit of falling on the side, but when he had the pillow he didn't fall on the side anymore. He'd only fall forwards and was therefore able to use his hands to stop himself from potential pain.

As my brother David grew even bigger and reached the 10th month mark, we found yet another use for it. It became a nap pillow for him. Sometimes he would wear himself out while playing. When we saw how preciously he'd be sleeping, we didn't want to wake him up. However, we felt bad that he was on the floor or carpet without some sort of head support. We'd slowly put his head on the nursing pillow, whose U shape fit him so well, so he could have at the very least a pillow.

Bosom Baby Nursing Pillow

Best Alternative Product to the Boppy Nursing Pillow

If the Boppy nursing pillows just don't appeal to you, there are other brands of nursing pillows that may appeal to you.

Luna Lullaby Bosom Baby Nursing Pillow - Brown and Chocolate Dot

Review

This particular pillow is large enough for twins - that's right, two babies at a time. It is fairly large so larger women will find it more accommodating. Its cover is soft and easy to take off, wash, and dry. Between the Boppy and the Luna Lullaby, this product (the Luna Lullaby) definitely fits better for children over 3 months. Its V shape (or L shape depending on how you view it) is much more comfortable among C-section mothers. Because of its versatile shape, its softness, and its ability to retain its shape, it can also be used for cradling, back support, and other pillow tasks. It would not, unlike most other nursing pillows, be used to help a baby learn to sit.

Lastly, it makes a great regular pillow for TV watching.
