How the Border Collie Originated
But didn't become famous until the end of the 19th century, when the first official sheep dog trial held in Bala, Wales, fanciers of all sheep dogs were eager to win the competition. Old Hemp, a Border Collie from Northumberland, England, won the trial in 1894 and continued his success later on. He is considered the forefather of all modern Border Collies, of how a Border Collie should look. The winner of prestigious competitions weighed about 45 pounds and stood approximately 21 inches at the shoulder. His color pattern, black and white, is still preferred by many Border Collie lovers. Semi-erect ears and straight coat are mentioned in the modern breed standard. In other words, Old Hemp became a certain model for Border Collie breeders.
Old Hemp, a tri-color dog, was born September 1893 and died May 1901. He was bred by Adam Telfer from Roy, a black and tan dog, and Meg, a black-coated, strong-eyed bitch. Hemp was a quiet, powerful, keen working dog that sheep responded easily. Undefeated at trials any many shepherds used him for stud. Old Hemp's working style became the Border Collie style. He sired more than 200 dogs, and a countless number of bitches. Old Hemp was bred for his looks and impeccable working ability.
Old Hemp sired many famous dogs, including Old Kep: Born in 1901, Old Kep was a very kind and friendly dog. One of his contributions to the breed was his "Eye" which resulted in 45 first place wins at trials. Don, a son of Old Kep, was exported to New Zealand where he contributed to the Australian Border Collies.
There was one other dog that became very famous, his name was Winston Cap. The dog that the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS) badge portrays in the characteristic Border Collie herding pose. He was the most popular stud dog in the history of the breed, and appears in a huge percentage of pedigrees today. Bred by W. S. Hetherington and trained and handled by John Richardson, Cap was a biddable and good-natured dog. His bloodlines all trace back to the early registered dogs of the stud book, and to J. M. Wilson's Cap, who occurs sixteen times within seven generations in his pedigree. Winston Cap sired three Supreme Champions and is grand-sire of three others, one of whom was E. W. Edwards' Bill, who won the championship twice.
These dogs were traditionally known simply as "collies," but terms like working collie, old-fashioned collie, and farm collie have also been applied to them. It was in 1915 that James Reid, Secretary of the International Sheep Dog Society in the United Kingdom, first used the term "Border Collie" to distinguish those dogs registered by the ISDS from the Kennel Club's "Collie," which originally came from the same working stock but had developed a different, standardized appearance following its introduction to the show ring in 1860.

To get to know me better, you must know about the history of Border Collies and what makes us lick or what makes us tick. After you read about Border Collies, I will tell you more about myself in another lens and why I would make the best Vice President.
Appearance of the Border Collie
Border Collies are the fanatical black and white dogs that have been bred to herd sheep. They will live about 12 to 15 years and come in an assortment of sizes and colors, though they generally range from about 30 to 60 pounds and their "typical" markings are black with a white collar, chest, head stripe (blaze), paws, and tail tip. These markings are only the perceived "typical" markings, as Border Collies also come in red/white, black/red/white, blue merle, red merle, mostly white, tan and black, brindle, sable, and mostly black varieties. They are quite commonly seen in television ads and Hollywood films (Border Collies were used in the move "Babe". It was Babe, in the movie that the pig was shown to be more intelligent). In general, Border Collies are medium-sized dogs without extreme physical characteristics and a moderate amount of coat. Their double coats can be anywhere from slick to lush, and can come in many colors, although black and white is by far the most common. Black tricolor (black/tan/white), red and white, and red tricolor (red/tan/white) also occur regularly, with other colors such as blue creme and yellow white, red merle, blue merle, "Australian red"/gold, and sable seen less frequently. Solid Black is also seen. They are prone to shedding. Border Collies need to be brushed regularly to keep the coat healthy and dirt free.
Though their eyes varies from deep brown to amber or blue with occasionally one eye of each color, it is the Border Collie stare that people remember.
The ears of the Border Collie vary. Some are fully erect ears, fully dropped ears, and others semi-erect ears.
Those dogs bred for the conformation ring are more homogeneous in appearance than working Border Collies, since to win in conformation showing they must conform closely to breed club standards that are specific on many points of the structure, coat and color. Kennel clubs specify, for example, that the Border Collie must have a "keen and intelligent" expression, and that the preferred eye color is dark brown. In deference to the dog's working origin, scars and broken teeth received in the line of duty are not to be counted against a Border Collie in the show ring.
Height at withers: Males from 19" to 22", females from 18" to 21".
A Border Collie's Temperament
Border Collies are an intelligent, biddable breed with an instinctive desire to work closely and intensely with a human handler. They are very well behaved and can be very excitable dogs. Although the primary role of the Border Collie is that of the working stock dog, dogs of this breed are becoming increasingly popular as pets. These dogs are also generally not suitable for households with small children. For they tend to herd the child and if the child does not respond properly may get nipped. Many Border Collies who end up in shelters or rescue groups are there because owners, who may have been attracted by their appearance and intelligence, were not prepared to meet their dog's needs. These are very energetic dogs that require a lot of physical stamina and endurance from their owners.Border Collies make very demanding, energetic pets that are better off in households that can provide them with plenty of exercise and a job to do. Border Collies are now also being used in showings and dog sports, especially agility, where their speed and agility comes to good use. In an appropriate home, with a dedicated, active owner, a Border Collie can be an excellent companion.

Herding Instinct and Facts about Herding Trails
In a typical pasture environment each trained sheepdog will do the work that it would take about three human individuals to do. (Thus eliminating more jobs that have gone to the dogs). Attempts to replace them with mechanical approaches to herding have only achieved a limited amount of success. In general stock handlers find dogs more reliable and more economical to run.The herding instinct in Border Collies is a behavioral trait that has been bred "into them" over the past two hundred years or so. What many people fail to realize, even long-standing Border Collie owners, is that the herding instinct is simply a modified version of the killing instinct of wolves. The instinct has been toned down somewhat through selective breeding. In fact, the instinct has not been bred "into them" but rather, "out of them". Border Collies retain the circling and gathering instinct so vital in hunting wolf packs but refrain from actually going in and making the final "kill". The bone structure ranges from lightweight and graceful to heavy-boned and majestic.
In herding, Border Collies circle and stalk the object of interest. The instinct to herd in Border Collies evidences itself differently than in most other herding dogs. Whereas most breeds of herding dogs drive the livestock away from the handler, Border Collies circle the livestock at the far end and bring them back to the handler (known as "gathering" or "fetching"). Additionally, Border Collies tend not to use force (initially) to drive the livestock where they want to but rather, use what is known as "eye", a sort of threatening stare-down that intimidates the stock into moving in the desired direction. If the non-physical means of moving stock do not work, a Border Collie's natural instinct is to slowly escalate the encounter into an ever-increasing use of force. Barking, nipping, and eventually gripping (biting) are used to get the point across to the more stubborn sheep.

- Sadly my border collie, Toby, has moved on to, hopefully, fresh pastures. He was more than just a dog he was a trusted friend. When my son was small he would guard his bedroom until my son was asleep and then he'd come downstairs 'job done' and wagging his tail. Though I worked different hours Toby 'knew' when I would be arriving home. Could go on for ages about him! Loved your lens - thank you for helping to generate some lovely memories.
