What is A Border Collie
Is a Border Collie Right For Me?
A Border Collie has high energy, stamina, and desire to work above all other things. They are a herding dog and notice every movement of their livestock, and they react by moving, at times almost imperceptibly, to take advantage of it or to counter it.Watching a Border Collie working is a wonderful thing, the movement of both dog and stock is usually calm and fluid. Border Collies are perhaps the worlds premier sheep-working breed and are known for their athleticism, intelligence, and strong work ethic.
The difference between a Border Collie (a herding dog) and a Heeler is that instead of driving livestock out by nipping at the heels as an Australian Cattle Dog would, for example, the Border Collie's instinct is to run out past a herd or flock, gather the animals, and return them to the shepherd.
Don't mistake these dogs, they are are usually workaholics. Most certainly, they are happiest when they have a job to do, whether that job be herding, obedience, agility, or any of the other active occupations and dog sports at which they excel.
They are extremely quick, high-energy, busy dogs and they must have plenty of exercise. They are bred for endurance: a working Border Collie is able to run many miles a day over sometimes difficult terrain, then go out and do it again the next day. Border Collies herd everything that moves: livestock, birds, other dogs, cats, children, and even bugs.
Border Collies thrive on attention and are very affectionate and people-oriented. However, good socialization is important for them: they can be reserved with people they don't know.
These dogs are highly intelligent and quick learners, but they are slow to mature - they are "puppies" until around 2 or 3 years (or older), and many 10 and 12 year old dogs are still very lively and full of energy.
Don't expect a Border Collie to start acting mature and dignified at 3 or 4 years of age! If at all!

Should I buy a Border Collie For My Children
If your child is younger than 7 years old then I strongly recommend AGAINST buying any sort of dog.Dogs and Puppies view the human members of their families as other dogs - they do not see the distinction between humans and dogs.....
Young children tend to love their puppies too much and when it is time for puppy to sleep, the child does not leave the puppy alone. The puppy may express its discomfit with the annoyance by growling or baring its teeth.
This is really no different to Mum and Dad coming home from work and 'grumbling' at the kids - dogs just show it differently.
Dogs are not toys for children, but they do make excellent companions. Many of my dogs were around before my children were and they are now best of mates. We did have to take precautions to ensure that the children and the dogs did not 'annoy' each other.
Precautions we took included: Never leaving the dogs and children alone together; Allowing the dogs to have their 'own areas' where they could escape from the family for time out and making sure that the dogs understood that the kids came before them in the pecking order.
Now! My kids have their own dogs... the dogs sleep in their rooms and pay attention to the kids just as they would to us.
I know that if I have to go out for a few hours, the kids can let the dogs into the house and be as safe, if not safer, then if we were at home.

I Want Border Collie Puppies
Breeding your Border Collie is not as simple as finding another Border Collie and letting nature take its course.Border Collies are subject to a few hereditary diseases that MUST be taken into consideration when choosing a potential mate for your dog.
I maintain a list of diseases that affect Border Collies at Border Collie Health Problems. All responsible breeders spend many hours assessing both pedigrees to ensure that the match is a good one and will not result in defects such as:
Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (CL)
Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome (TNS)
Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)
Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD)
Hip Dysplasia (HD)
The size of a border collie litter will vary from 1 or 2 pups to as many as 8 to 10 or even more. My Border Collies had any from 1 to 10 pups but on average, the litter sizes were around 6.
A litter of Border Collie puppies are probably the cutest things you've every seen - just like little teddy bears and they all love to snuggle - but... a litter of puppies is hard work to with the feeding, cleaning and general care.
Before breeding your dog, not only should you consider the health issues, you should also think seriously about the time requirements to ensure your puppies are healthy, happy and well socialized.

- Love Border Collies! They're a favourite in the Leetham household! I used to have a black and white female Border, she sadly moved on, on the 1st of March 2009. She had an auto-immune disease. RIP Phoebe.

- We almost adopted a border collie pup last year as there are several farms around my area where I live and there were lots of ads last spring for border collie pups. But, I had heard that they are high energy dogs and I wasn't sure we would be the right family for one. Instead we settled on a black lab/cocker spaniel mix - he's very cute indeed.
