Are you descended from the Border Reivers?
Have you traced your family history? Do you know the origin of your name? Have you checked the genealogy of your family tree?
If you can find your surname on the map below then your ancestors were probably Reiver's, one of the clans that roamed the border country between England and Scotland between the 13th and 17th centuries.
This special group of people represent a unique clan ancestry quite different from the often more familar Scottish clan names such as MacDonald and Campbell. In fact the Reiver's claim to place name before nationality. An Armstrong before England or Scotland a Graham before any country, and Elliot before a nation.

Border Reivers
Border Reivers were raiders along the Anglo?Scottish border from the late 13th century to the end of the 16th century. Their ranks consisted of both Scottish and English families, and they raided the entire border country without regard to their victims' nationality. Their heyday was perhaps in the last hundred years of their existence, during the Tudor dynasty in England.

Exploring Border Reivers History
Amazon synopsis:
The Border Country has always been a wild area, both in landscape and in history. It has seen many years of war and turmoil, but is an area of great beauty and has the capacity to imprint its unique charisma on every visitor. It is a fascinating and romantic area and yet the stories of its bloody history can still chill the soul. About 400 years ago, it was a desperate and dangerous place - this was the long-disputed Border Region separating the continually warring kingdoms of England and Scotland - a land of few law-abiding people and a land where no man dare venture unarmed. This was a place where life was lived under the constant threat of violence, an unsettling, windswept land where every home was a fortress and almost every family at feud - this was a time of constant raid and reprisal when killing, burning, looting, theft, robbery and blackmail were an accepted way of life for the great Border Families such as the Armstrongs, the Nixons, the Milburns, the Kerrs, the Dodds, the Robsons, the Grahams and the Elliots...They are remembered today as the Border Reivers!
Tough and rugged, these hard men were merciless racketeers and plunderers who held little sacred except their pledged word. If you have a reiver name, or suspect your ancestors were just a load of villains up to no good, then this well researched and lavishly illustrated new book could just confirm your worst fears!
Johnnie Armstrong
John Armstrong was a border outlaw and infamous sheep stealer. He raided into England when Scotland was in power and raided into Scotland when England was in power. He also had a hundred and sixty men despite no income from rents. The ballad relates that the king sends him a letter, requesting his presence in court and promising him safety. Armstrong is taken by the honor and orders his men to dress richly, as befits the court. At their arrival, the king tries to arrest them, and Armstrong orders them to fight. They are all killed, although Johnnie is brought down only by a treacherous attack from behind.
Johnnie Armstrong or Johnie Armstrong is Child ballad number 169.
Kinmont Willie Armstrong
William Armstrong of Kinmont or Kinmont Willie was a border reiver and outlaw active in the Anglo-Scottish Border country in the last decades of the 16th century.
Armstrong was captured by the forces of the English Warden of the West March in violation of a truce day in 1596, and imprisoned in Carlisle Castle. Walter Scott of Buccleuch ("the Bold Buccleuch"), keeper of Liddesdale on whose land the arrest had been made, protested to the English Warden, Sir Thomas Scrope, 10th Baron Scrope of Bolton. When Scrope refused to release Armstrong, Buccleuch led a party of men on a daring raid into England and broke Armstrong out of the castle.
Kinmont Willie Armstrong was never recaptured. Legend supposes he died in his bed of old age, sometime between 1608 and 1611.
The story of the raid on Carlisle Castle is told in the ballad "Kinmont Willie" (Child No. 186).

The Cursing Stone
The 1525 curse placed on the Reievers by the Archbishop of Glasgow, Gavin Dunbar.

And you thought not buying pegs off a gyspy would get you into trouble!!
"I curse their head and all the hairs of their head; I curse their face, their brain (innermost thoughts), their mouth, their nose, their tongue, their teeth, their forehead, their shoulders, their breast, their heart, their stomach, their back, their womb, their arms, their leggs, their hands, their feet, and every part of their body, from the top of their head to the soles of their feet, before and behind, within and without."
"I curse them going and I curse them riding; I curse them standing and I curse them sitting; I curse them eating and I curse them drinking; I curse them rising, and I curse them lying; I curse them at home, I curse them away from home; I curse them within the house, I curse them outside of the house; I curse their wives, their children, and their servants who participate in their deeds. I (bring ill wishes upon) their crops, their cattle, their wool, their sheep, their horses, their swine, their geese, their hens, and all their livestock. I (bring ill wishes upon) their halls, their chambers, their kitchens, their stanchions, their barns, their cowsheds, their barnyards, their cabbage patches, their plows, their harrows, and the goods and houses that are necessary for their sustenance and welfare."
"May all the malevolent wishes and curses ever known, since the beginning of the world, to this hour, light on them. May the malediction of God, that fell upon Lucifer and all his fellows, that cast them from the high Heaven to the deep hell, light upon them."
"May the fire and the sword that stopped Adam from the gates of Paradise, stop them from the glory of Heaven, until they forebear, and make amends."
"May the evil that fell upon cursed Cain, when he slew his brother Abel, needlessly, fall on them for the needless slaughter that they commit daily."
"May the malediction that fell upon all the world, man and beast, and all that ever took life, when all were drowned by the flood of Noah, except Noah and his ark, fall upon them and drown them, man and beast, and make this realm free of them, for their wicked sins."
"May the thunder and lightning which rained down upon Sodom and Gomorra and all the lands surrounding them, and burned them for their vile sins, rain down upon them and burn them for their open sins. May the evil and confusion that fell on the Gigantis for their opression and pride in building the Tower of Babylon, confound them and all their works, for their open callous disregard and opression."
"May all the plagues that fell upon Pharoah and his people of Egypt, their lands, crops and cattle, fall upon them, their equipment, their places, their lands, their crops and livestock."
"May the waters of the Tweed and other waters which they use, drown them, as the Red Sea drowned King Pharoah and the people of Egypt, preserving God's people of Israel."
"May the earth open, split and cleave, and swallow them straight to hell, as it swallowed cursed Dathan and Abiron, who disobeyed Moses and the command of God."
"May the wild fire that reduced Thore and his followers to two-hundred-fifty in number, and others from 14,000 to 7,000 at anys, usurping against Moses and Aaron, servants of God, suddenly burn and consume them daily, for opposing the commands of God and Holy Church."
"May the malediction that suddenly fell upon fair Absolom, riding through the wood against his father, King David, when the branches of a tree knocked him from his horse and hanged him by the hair, fall upon these untrue Scotsmen and hang them the same way, that all the world may see."
"May the malediction that fell upon Nebuchadnezzar's lieutenant, Olifernus, making war and savagery upon true christian men; the malediction that fell upon Judas, Pilate, Herod, and the Jews that crucified Our Lord; and all the plagues and troubles that fell on the city of Jerusalem therefore, and upon Simon Magus for his treachery, bloody Nero, Ditius Magcensius, Olibrius, Julianus Apostita and the rest of the cruel tyrants who slew and murdered Christ's holy servants, fall upon them for their cruel tyranny and murder of Christian people."
"And may all the vengeance that ever was taken since the world began, for open sins, and all the plagues and pestilence that ever fell on man or beast, fall on them for their openly evil ways, senseless slaughter and shedding of innocent blood."
"I sever and part them from the church of God, and deliver them immediately to the devil of hell, as the Apostle Paul delivered Corinth. I bar the entrance of all places they come to, for divine service and ministration of the sacraments of holy church, except the sacrament of infant baptism, only; and I forbid all churchmen to hear their confession or to absolve them of their sins, until they are first humbled / subjugated by this curse."
"I forbid all christian men or women to have any company with them, eating, drinking, speaking, praying, lying, going, standing, or in any other deed-doing, under the pain of deadly sin."
"I discharge all bonds, acts, contracts, oaths, made to them by any persons, out of loyalty, kindness, or personal duty, so long as they sustain this cursing, by which no man will be bound to them, and this will be binding on all men."
"I take from them, and cast down all the good deeds that ever they did, or shall do, until they rise from this cursing."
"I declare them excluded from all matins, masses, evening prayers, funerals or other prayers, on book or bead (rosary); of all pigrimages and alms deeds done, or to be done in holy church or be christian people, while this curse is in effect."
"And, finally, I condemn them perpetually to the deep pit of hell, there to remain with Lucifer and all his fellows, and their bodies to the gallows of Burrow moor, first to be hanged, then ripped and torn by dogs, swine, and other wild beasts, abominable to all the world. And their candle (light of their life) goes from your sight, as may their souls go from the face of God, and their good reputation from the world, until they forebear their open sins, aforesaid, and rise from this terrible cursing and make satisfaction and penance."

The Border Reivers: With visitor information (Trade Editions)
From the wars of King Edward I, "the Hammer of the Scots", until the union of the two crowns under the Stuarts, the Border Marches of England and Scotland were torn by a vicious cycle of raid, reprisal and blood feud. It bred a ruthless and resourceful people -- at once professional cattle thieves and skilled guerrilla soldiers. Sporting names such as Nebless Clem, Ill Drooned Geordie, Jock Pott the Bastard and Hob of the Hole, these were the great "Riding Clans" immortalized by Sir Walter Scott, history remembers them as the border reivers. The Lay of The Last Minstrel
A poem by Walter Scott
The date of the tale itself is about the middle of the 16th century
"The Lay of the Last Minstrel" (1805) is a long narrative poem by Walter Scott.
In the poem, Lady Margaret Scott of Buccleuch, the "Flower of Teviot" is beloved by Baron Henry of Cranstown an ally of the Ker Clan, but a deadly feud exists between the two border clans of Scott and Carr/Ker, which has resulted in the recent murder of Lady Margaret's father, Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch by the Kers on the High Street in Edinburgh.
The Preface:
"The Poem, now offered to the Public, is intended to illustrate the customs and manners which anciently prevailed on the Borders of England and Scotland. The inhabitants living in a state partly pastoral and partly warlike, and combining habits of constant depredation with the influence of a rude spririt of chivalry, were often engaged in scenes highly susceptible of poetical ornament. As the description of scenery and manners was more the object of the Author than a combined and regular narrative, the plan of the Ancient Metrical Romance was adopted, which allows greter latitude, in this respect, than would be consistent with the dignity of a regular Poem. The same model offered other faculties, as it permits an occasional alteration of measure, which, in some degree, authorizes the change of rhythm in the text. The machinery, also, adopted from popular belief, would have seemed puerile in a Poem which did not partake of the rudeness of the old Ballad, or Metrical Romance.
For these reasons, the Poem was put into the mouth of an ancient Minstrel, the last of the race, who, as he is supposed to have survived the Revolution, might have caught somewhat of the refinement of modern poetry, without losing the simplicity of his original model. The date of the Tale itself is about the middle of the sixteenth century, when most of the personages actually flourished. The time occupied by the action is Three Nights and Three Days."
It is not to be confused with The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, also by Walter Scott, compiled three years previously.

Expert Reiver Articles by Thomas William Ross
A series of informative Reiver articles. Thomas says about himself..."I have a special interest in the Border reivers, the clans who, ignoring any dictate from authority or monarchy, held sway in the Border lands for hundreds of years and often did their utmost to wipe each other from the face of the earth. Their history is compelling reading and figures highly in the story of the two nations of England and Scotland."
