Mattress sales. This is for hours in the showroom by yourself most of the time waiting for a few customers to come in. Then I'll come in at the same time.

I did 3 of these boring jobs when I was a student: mail sorter, data entry clerk and envelope stuffing!

While in school in Fort Worth, Texas, I worked in the MOST BORING JOB OFFERED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, I worked for the IRS. They had a building that warehoused all of the IRS returns from taxpayers in a five-state area. This was 1980 - pre-computers, all paper. The warehouse was the size of a kazillion football fields or roughly half the size of Southfork. My job was to spend the entire day walking up and down the rows and rows of shelves pulling tax returns that the IRS planned to audit. This place was Dullsville, USA. I'm glad I survived it to tell the tale.

accounting is very boring post accountants are trying to get out and find direct recruitment elsewhere.

Gift wrapping expediter in a busy department store during Christmas. You repeat the same old thing over and over again to hundreds of people. It could actually be done mechanically on repeat mode, to tell you the truth.

can't enter your contest, can't think of a boring story I've had at an occupation. 'thumbs up' however on the fun read.

Standing on a street corner waiving a marketing sign would nearly drive me insane when thinking of the most boring jobs. With that said, I would take whatever job I could earn to make ends meet, regardless of how boring it might be, and I respect those who do! We all start somewhere and most of us have had to log countless hours doing jobs we don't like.

I'm a security guard and I work in an elevator. For 6 hours every day during the week I stand in an elevator and tally how many people go in and out. Completely pointless. Not to mention I get motion sickness and i'm stuck in a 4x3 box. Most boring job ever!
  • Dory harvey Jul 24, 2011 @ 8:48 pm | delete
My most boring job was hand sorting rocks at a moving conveyor belt!

Wal-Mart greeter, well I didn't have that job, but I think that's the most boring job ever. Because you always greet, and no one will notice you.

Yikes! Especially after reading some of these, I can't complain about my job ha! There's really nothing to complain about in the first place though. I used to work at McDonalds, though, which was pretty bad. Not boring, just really bad.
  • dustytoes Jan 23, 2011 @ 3:08 pm | delete
I once had to wrap lettuce for four hours straight when I worked in the produce department. I think I was making around $4 and hour! Ugh.

Stuffing envelopes. Not only is it boring, you can get nasty paper cuts, too!

I have a seriously boring job, it sounds interesting at first but it's actually very mundane and involves tons of reptition and reading. I'm an editor at a publishing company. Some days I want to die I'm so bored. I would look for other work but the economy sucks. I hate it.

I dispatch taxis cabs, on fridays and saturdays it can get pretty busy and time goes by fast. The rest of the week however is so slooooowwww the day drags on and on. I used to drive a cab myself before my badge was revoked for a speeding ticket. I had so much freedom driving, no schedule, no annoying coworkers, no boss breathing down my back i used to love my job now i despise going to work. Driving a cab was fun, riding around meeting lots of people and making fast cash now i sit in front of a computer awnsering phones i don't think i can take it much longer.

Well....i'm at my job right now and i decided to look up boring jobs to see how mine compares.....I do seat selection for an airline.....no bookings ....only seat selection.....so every call I get never lasts more than 5 minutes....I get maybe 1 call per hour for a 8 hour shift...theres me and 1 other agent for when one of us is off.....And i'm on a computer full of firewalls of all sorts...ugh!....I've been here 5 months....
  • abysis212 Nov 16, 2009 @ 12:39 pm | delete
This sounds like a good job for me...minus the coworker that is. I want a job where I can practice singing while I'm at work. I wouldn't want to annoy my coworker or really have anyone else around. Where do you get this job? Qualifications?
  • Jul 15, 2009 @ 9:31 am | in reply to deskinsiberia | delete
wow, that was hilarous and made me feel better. I am not alone! I am unfortunately not doing the job I was hired for due to several unforeseen circumstances. I know I should be grateful just to have a job but the repetitive mindless tasks are making me crazy! It makes me wonder why I spent all that money on college when I'm doing the job of a monkey.

Thankfully I have music to lift my spirits. The hard part is keeping a sense of humor about the whole thing like you seem to be able to do. I salute you!
  • metallicalover0528 Mar 11, 2010 @ 2:01 pm | delete
I'm right with you! If I didn't have music to listen to during the day I would have gone nuts a long time ago.

I TOTALLY AGREE. Nothing is more boring or inane than government job. I have actually gone to my boss and practically begged for more to do. That is a BIG no-no in gov't jobs, since one person admitting that it's a scam might draw attention to the fact that everyone else is doing nothing. You would not believe that things ppl come up with to justtify their existence around here. I have been told by everyone that I am crazy to even admit this with my nice pay and benes. Question is, how long can I stand it???

When I was a student I had a summer painting boards, it was the most boring job ever! Standing in one place, do the same hand movements, no interaction with anyone else.
  • deskinsiberia May 19, 2009 @ 5:57 pm | delete
I am the receptionist at a lavish law firm. In at 9, out at 6. My only real duties: route incoming calls, greet clients (which is rare) and offer them a beverage. The phone rings about 15x per day; sometimes it will not ring for 2 hours or more. I can surf anything I want, watch movies, or make personal calls if I choose but I am chained to my desk unless Im peeing (must ask) or... well, leaving for lunch is futile- we are in bfe. If i am this bored I should get paid to eat, so I pack a lunch. Unless we have clients, I have little human interaction all day. Been here 5 months; not long enough to look good on a resume. I have googled everything, played games, talked, emailed, looked up old freinds, painted nails, make-up (morning ritual), movies, even babysat the boss's kid- a true highlight. I need to: a) quit; b) learn how to pleasure myself at desk; or c) start wearing belts around my throat so when I really hit a wall I can give it a tug to make sure I am still alive.

I think i have one of the most boring jobs ever created. I work at the front desk at a hotel. There isn't enough to do in a 8 hour time frame. I get to fold towels and sheets and set up breakfast in the mornings. I also had a security job a few years back where i sat at a desk for 8 hours. I had 2 rounds to make that took maybe a whole 10 minutes to complete.
  • sgromey Jan 5, 2009 @ 11:39 am | delete
Ah, boring jobs. If you want to be really bored AND make pretty good money, accept a business analyst job somewhere in the DC area, and better yet, wrok for the government or a government contract (or similar position). I am paid 110K, "work" (If I would call it that) maybe an hour or so a day, and people happily sign my time sheets week after week. In fact, the real rule here is "don't ask, don't tell." I am just amazed that the rest of the world produces real sh*t, and most American push paper around a desk. Of course, the real secret is that few people would ever admit to having a boring job! The more evolved you are, the more boring office work is...even if you have letters behind your name and a fancy title to boot!

after having 26, yes 26 jobs all of which i left on my own accord not by misdeed or blunder. I have come to the conclusion that all shop and bank woks is dull. Bosses do all have a problem of some degree with power. whether none at all or use it to such extreme it could solve the impending energy crisis by simply pluging them into a power station their combined hot air, self importance etc would keep our homes warm and cosy... they wouldnt agree however, as there need and greed of power for themselves is way to high and to our anoyance do they ever look at them selves and think.... yes i am a (insert your own expleative here)

I worked for an insurance company where I only had about one hour of work a day until I was (mercifully!) laid off. Too bad Squidoo hadn't been invented then. I could have spent my day on the web!

Actually - writing can be boring: when you just can't think of anything to write. I also don't mind a bit of envelope stuffing actually - it beats dish washing any day. Well perhaps if it was envelope stuffing ALL DAY. I'm closer to being a writer than to being an envelope stuffer - so perhaps that's why I see the attractions of the latter...

I think it's not only the job you do, it's also about what you do for society. In that case, almost all jobs suck big time.
Anyhow, I was wondering why Call Center wasn't on top of the list. Admit it, it's worse than being a greeter at Wal-Mart, it's pure routine, it could theoretically be done by a machine, it's just monkey-proof and the pay is crummy.

I work as the PM supervisor, 10am to 7pm each day. I come in and all my employees are already out making their deliveries. I stay in the office sitting in a chair and waiting for my employees to get back into the office before 5pm. Once they are back, I walk about 20 paces and to the printer, pull the report and then return back to my chair and wait for the truck to pick up all our shipments. I spend 30 minutes working and 8 and a 1/2 hours sitting in a chair. I will sometimes be so bored I say I'm going to lunch when I'm really going to my car to sleep for about an hour. I need more of a challenge! The guy I took over for was stressing out cause he couldn't finish everything in a day. I'm stressing cause there is no way to spread 30 minutes of work through out an 8 to 9 hour day, lunch included!

Working in a fish factory with a company obsessed management wannabe who still thinks he can run the company/the country/the economy/the Engand football team and play drums for Led Zeppelin. I now understand why people run through shopping malla with AK 47s, I now understand why people turn to heroin and alcohol, I am not agressive by nature but this job and this individual could turn the average pacifist into someone Mike TYson would be scared of.

Telemarketer/Appointment Setter! This has to be the absolute MOST boring job on the planet. It's dial dial dial ring ring ring and then they hang up on ya. Boring.

I work as a resident assistant at a rehab house. All i do is dispense medication and hang out with them, watch TV, read, play sudoku, small talk. I'm about to rip my eyes out from boredom. They're also highly dysfunctional people that are hard to deal with. So its not only boring but very frustrating.. At least I get paid decent to be bored.

Being an instructor in a truck driving school is quite boring. Just look at the face of a guy next to the student driving the oversized truck on a highway... It may be me.
Truck driving school is where I work.

I once had a job at Ideal Toys years ago. They were one`s that made the original cabbage patch dolls. There were lines of factory workers all assigned to one specific job. I once made Buckaroo boxes and became so fast in my mind numbingly boring zombie like state that I flooded the rest of the production line and got moved onto something more complex (can`t even remember what it was)!Suffice to say I wasn` there for too long.

I have the most boring job ever! A receptionist where the phone rings about five times a day! Staring into space for money is just wrong!!!!!

I once had a job where I had to sit next to a conveyor belt carrying bricks. My job was to turn each brick from front to side. A brick came by about every twenty seconds. The most exciting part was when a brick arrived slightly turned so that I would have to stand up to turn it. Ugh!

Tape Rewinder. I spent a week working for a books-on-tape company. My job was to sit at a bank of industrial cassette tape decks and make sure all tapes were rewound and in working order before they were shipped out to the next recipient. I can't say I've ever had another job as boring as that one.

Administrative/accounting/secretarial. Doesn't sound bad, but when all the work's done for payroll and the bills are entered, I find myself sitting on my ass looking for an excuse to leave. It's bad for my psyche. I hate boring jobs!!!!!!!!!1

I once had a job as an inventory clerk. Checking pieces for companies. Aside from the mystery journey everyday going to different locations for work, it was pretty boring. Counting pieces of food in a pathmark supermarket. How lame is that?
  • Donna Jul 2, 2007 @ 10:19 pm | delete
Why they don't just slap a mannequin behind the counter in my small town Wal-Mart's jewelery department instead of paying me to stare into space for 8 hours a day is a mystery to me. Not to mention my coworkers are all escapees from local nursing homes with fond memories of the pre-Civil War days.

I'm on work placement for two months now and spent it on the computer in an office with 2 people who dont talk! I'm ment to be learning about marketing but the boss rarely gives me tasks to do and he just talks to the other employee instead.

In my other job I've created a new marketing campaign.
