Good? Or Bad? Being Born on Valentine's Day!
Do I like it? Or not? Well, being born on Valentine's day has it's good and it's bad sides. But, more of that later on.
Do You Know Someone Born on February, 14th?
How It All Happened....
If I was born on Valentine's day, why my name ain't Valentine?

I was born on February, 14th in a hospital in small town in Croatia as firstborn to my parents. My mother had some really silly ideas about my given name but thankfully, my father didn't let her choose that name for me! If he did, my mother would name me after cartoon character!
Instead of that I was named Michelle after archangel Michael, who happens to be protector of city I live in! And since we in Croatia have tradition of celebrating "Name Day", my name day is on same day as our city celebrates it's birthday.
If you would like to know more about Saint Michael, take a look at Wikipedia.

This statue, "St. Michael" depicts the archangel Michael entrenched in battle with Lucifer. The statue stands 15 inches tall, is 10 inches wide and 5 inches deep. Made of cold cast resin, it has a metallic bronzed finish, and has hand-painted accents, to give it the look of metal. The detail is incredible, from the individual feathers on Michael's wings, to the look of disgust on Lucifer's face.
There Was No Valentine's Day in Communism!
Valentine's day came as American Influence!

As I was growing up in former Yugoslavia, a communist country, I wasn't really aware of meaning of Valentine's day. Didn't even know about it until 1980's when Yugoslavia started to open it's borders to foreigners and American influence.
For me, during first 12-13 years of my life, February,14th was only my birthday and had nothing to do with Valentine's day!
Valentine's day was something we learned about in movies that came after borders were opened. In start, it wasn't that much commercial holiday. It was something that could be congratulated with card and a flower.
But as time passed, Yugoslavia became 6 separate countries and now I'm living in Croatia. Democratic country with all it's commercial holidays!

Basic Facts About Valentine's Day
Picture: Abstract hearts by Sharon Sharpe
'Valentines Day or Saint Valentine's Day' is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the English-speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentines cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.
The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines". Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards.Leigh Eric Schmidt, "The Fashioning of a Modern Holiday: St. Valentine's Day, 1840-1870" Winterthur Portfolio 28.4 (Winter 1993), pp. 209-245. The sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th century America, where many Valentine cards are now general greeting cards rather than declarations of love, was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States.Leigh Eric Schmidt, "The Commercialization of the calendar: American holidays and the culture of consumption, 1870-1930" Journal of American History 78.3 (December 1991) pp 890-98. It's considered one of the Hallmark holidays.
The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas. The association estimates that, in the US, men spend on average twice as much money as women.

There is "Endurance Love", meaning someone moves his or her schedule around just to get someone else's attention. There is "Stalking Love", where one person seeks out another person whom they secretly love. There is "Obvious Love" where the couple has a relationship everywhere, in the school or out in the town. There is also "Want-to-Be Love", where someone wishes they could be together with a popular or well-liked person. Ahh! And, of course, there is the "Love Struck", where someone adores another person even though they have never spoken. All the different manifestations of love are found hidden in the words of this book. Behind every character there is a special feeling and each feeling tells its own story. Read and experience how one feeling can complicate and yet make things perfect at the same time. See how the characters fall in and out of love through the course of a day. Whether it's the unbelievable soaring, hundreds-of-feet-in-the-air love, or the lack of love for a solitary fish in a fishbowl of a Nigerian street shop. A picture says a thousand words but a feeling tells a thousand stories.
Valentine's Day During School Years
Celebrating birthday or Valentine's day?

After we became aware that there is a holiday that is celebrated on February 14th, I was already in school.
During these years we had a sweet tradition on our art class - we had to handmade Valentine's cards for someone from our class. They were unsigned so it was like anonymous saying 'love you' but it was cute at same time! They were all given to our teacher before Valentine's day and she would give them away to whom they were intended on that day. What I didn't know then is that our teacher checked, and if she saw that someone had no Valentine card with his / her name, she would slip in card she made herself. So everybody would receive Valentine card and feel loved and accepted. That was really great of her!
Still, Valentine's day or not, I would celebrate my birthday on February 14th with my parents, siblings, relatives and friends. Usually, we would all gather at my home and have cakes, me blowing candles, etc.

Boys & Valentine's Day
Growing up slightly made a difference in celebrating February 14th

As I grow up, being born on Valentine's day changed many things. There was a question: having birthday party of spending day with boyfriend? So, I always tried to move my birthday party for day or two and celebrate Valentine's day in private.
As I am not kind of person burdened with receiving expensive gifts, I never asked anyone to buy me two gifts - one for birthday and one for Valentine's day. Still, boyfriends felt different so I would receive either expensive and extraordinary presents or multiple gifts.

- I think sharing a holiday and a birthday is difficult. My husband and I were married on Feb 15th and we always feel some added pressure to celebrate both Valentine's Day and our anniversary. Fortunately, those two events go hand in hand, but a birthday and Valentine's Day? So on your birthday, you can't just take a "me" day - you have to make the day special for others, too. Of course, the multiple gifts benefit - not that gifts are the most important thing - doesn't hurt, either. :)
