London's Famous Food Market
If you love food and are visiting London, then be sure to include Borough Market on your itinerary. It is one of the finest food markets in the world and sells not only the best British produce, but also a range of delicious international fare. It's a favourite haunt for London foodies including top TV chefs such as Jamie Oliver. If you get tired of shopping, you can always visit one of the many great pubs in the area for a pint!
My Borough Market Photos
I like to go down and take snaps on a sunny day. Here is a selection of my pics from the market.
Borough Market
Today the market can be found just beyond the Southern side of London Bridge between Stoney Street and Southwark cathedral. It is loosely made up of different sections - the Floral Hall, the Main Market and the Green Market. There is also the Jubilee Market which opens to extend the stalls at busy times of the year.
Wholesalers trade from the market throughout the working week, but many of the stalls trade from Thursday to Saturday only. Early Saturday is probably the best time to visit as it gets very busy towards lunchtime.
A Selection of Borough Market's Best
- Borough Market Official Website
- Find out more about the market on this official website. You can also download a map showing you where to find all the traders.
- Orkney Rose
- Orkney Rose represents 16 local producers from the Orkney Islands. I can personally recommend the sweet-cured herring with dill from this stall. It goes well with rye bread.
- Pieminister
- Pieminister makes lovely little themed pies. My favourite is chicken of aragon pie which is filled with free-range chicken, smoky bacon, roast garlic, vermouth and fresh tarragon.
- Monmouth Coffee
- This place is a bit of a legend. You can buy freshly ground coffee here and it is delicious! There is always a queue at the Stoney Street shop, but it goes down quickly. If you're stuck for time then try the smaller stall in the Main Market.
- Brindisa
- Brindisa sells fine Spanish food and has two locations within the market. There is a superb tapas at the Stoney Street entrance of the market and a shop further down the road in the Floral Hall. The chorizo sandwiches are highly popular on Saturdays.
- Utobeer
- This place is a beerlovers paradise. It stocks speciality beers, stouts, lagers, ciders and ales. Definitely worth a rummage.
- The Ginger Pig
- This is a fine butcher's shop selling only the best meat. I like to get my pork chops from there when I can get through the door.
- Arabica Food and Spice
- This website is still under construction, but the stall is great. They sell fresh falafels and also lots of dips which you can sample. My favourite is Courgette Fool. Mildly spicy and very tasty!

Hotels near Borough Market
The area surrounding the market, although rich in history, has only been regenerated in the last fifteen years and therefore the hotels tend to be new. The ones picked here have been well-reviewed on Tripadvisor and are value for money. In my opinion, this is an excellent place to stay in London. It is not as expensive as the West End and you are surrounded by key London attractions such as the Tower of London, the Globe Theatre and HMS Belfast.
