Bosnia's Romeo And Juliet

This page is dedicated to Admira Ismic and Bosko Brkic. She was muslim, he was an orthodox Christian, both were Slavs. Their story is set during the civil war in the city of Sarajevo. Their death completes the tragic fate of the other inhabitants of Sarajevo and their unnecessary death, where they were dying only on grounds of ethnicity.
Admira and Bosko had 25 years and they knew each other for nine years (from other source: for seven years). In 1993, at the time of heaviest fighting in Sarajevo they had planned wedding. But their plans were discontinued by the war. Their love knew no bounds though. It was there only one unsolvable problem and that was their ethnicity. In Sarajevo they had no chance. Their could choose either divide themselves or escape from their hometown. Muslim and Serbian officials guarantee them safe passage and Admira and Bosko received the promise that none of them will be killed. Promises remained unfulfilled. When they walked across the Vrbanje bridge from the Serbian side the shots were fired. Bosko was died immediately. Admira with severely injuries crawled towards him, lifted his arm put it around her shoulders and without trying to save at least herself she died at Bosko's side. Soldiers left their bodies lying on the bridge for another five days.

ROMEO AND JULIET IN SARAJEVO

The couple had been dating for seven years, since the university in Sarajevo. They both were the chemistry students. Bosko remained in Sarajevo to be with her love despite his family flight from the city, which turned into a bloody battlefield. The place was daily bombarded by Serbian snipers. In May 1993, they decided escape from Sarajevo on the Serbian side. The escape from Srajevo was extremely dangerous. They had to walk across the Vrbanje bridge, the front line between Serbian forces and Bosnian Muslims forces. Many residents would not dare go through this bridge, especially because of the snipers whose had been at the bridge from both sides. Only few of Sarajevo inhabitans passed this dangerous bridge. It was the only place where Admira and Bosko could get out of the town.

Bodies of Sarajevo's 'Romeo and Juliet' come home
Admira Ismic and Bosko Brkic were dubbed "Romeo and Juliet" because of their clashing ethnic backgrounds -- she was Muslim, he was Serbian -- and their tragic end. The two were both 25 years old, and had been together for nine years. They decided to flee Sarajevo in May 1993, when a Serb stranglehold on the city was at its height, to escape to safety, anywhere else.

I never heard this story before and it does make me wonder why so many people take orders to kill others for beliefs that are not even theirs. Very moving article. With thanks and appreciation. Cathi x

A modern day tragedy that should never have occurred. So sad that we can't learn from our historical mistakes.

The story of Bosko and admira is so sad. There are so many problems due to ethnicity that break my heart. a true modern Romeo and Juliet story that should make us think of the attrocities of war and injustice around it.

I do remember the Olympics there, but that memory has long been superseded by the Bosnian war. Such a sad shame for these two young ones and all the others who lost their lives.

Admira and Bosko, the Bosnian Romeo and Juliet shared more than just a normal couple s love -- they shared courage and tolerance, inteligence and the beauty of free spirits. It is a shame for the entire world that the story ever happened.
May the God of both their religion rest them peace!

Horrible... I still remember those days, although we in Zagreb mainly watched it on TV. My high school friend was killed near Dubrovnik soon after Serbs attacked Croatia. Balkans is a strange mixture of great and horrible history. This is very sad lens.
