Boston is One of America's Oldest Cities!
Renovations to the city make it modernized and new (The Big Dig)
Since Boston buildings have been close together for hundreds of years, before the advent of cars, the road system is quite tough to navigate. The much criticized "Big Dig" work that was done from the first ground breaking in 1991 and being completed in 2007. The new tunnel system had huge obstacles to overcome, such as tunneling under an existing subway tunnel and circumventing pipes and wires already in place. By the end of the construction, a number of parks and open areas made the top of the city much more attractive, while alleviating traffic below (though the tunnel has has its problems). DK Travel always makes an excellent guide, and this is no exception. Navigating the streets of Boston can be overwhelming, as streets are set up very haphazardly. This books covers all of the must-see gems and treasures Boston has to offer, all in one convenient guide.
Fenway Park
Home to the Boston Red Sox - oldest Major League Baseball stadium still in use
People are pretty sentimental about Fenway Park. While other cities are tearing down their stadiums in favor of new, updated, and higher capacity stadiums, Boston has kept there's intact. While a new stadium has been proposed again and again, the original still stands, with the Citgo sign in the background and the Green Monster (Monstah is you're a local) and all. It can be found at 4 Yawkey Way, which is near Kenmore Square.

Boston City Skyline
Photos of this famous skyline
The two largest objects on the skyline are the Prudential Tower, which is gray, and the John Hancock Tower, which is made of striking blue glass. Other notable parts of the skyline are the Copley Mall, and the old Hancock Building, which changes its antennae to change color certain times of year (much like the Empire State Building does).
Boston Bridges
Zakim, Longfellow, and Tobin Bridges
Boston has a few noteworthy bridges. The most distinguishable one is the newer Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge on I-93. This bridge is on the north end of the Big Dig Central Artery Tunnel, and crosses the Charles River. It is the widest cable bridge in the world.

Landfill!
The original size of Boston was much smaller than the present size. Boston used to be a peninsula, which was later filled in. Much of the present day city is predominantly fill, and no longer resembles a peninsula.
The North End
Great Italian food, historical buildings, and the Freedom Trail
The North End of Boston has deep history and a cool setting. Best of all, it's probably the best food in the city! Check out some of the restaurants on Hanover Street like Giacomo's, Ristorante Fiore, Il Panino, Cafe Pompeii, Modern Pastry and Mike's Pastry.

Copley Square
Located in Back Bay, home to Trinity Church, Prudential Building, and Hancock Building
The biggest skyscrapers in the city as well as some of the most beautiful churches like Trinity Church can be found in Copley Square. This area is part of Back Bay, and is west of Boston Common and Public Gardens (about a 20 minute walk). You'll also find the Prudential Mall (111 Huntington Ave, actually just down the street from the ACTUAL Copley Square, but whose counting?), Old South Church, and Boston Public Library here.

The Prudential Building
Southie
Home of Castle Island (Fort Independence) and lots of Irish
Southie is a neighborhood on the southeastern side of Boston known for having plenty of Irish descendants. It has been depicted in several movies has lots of charm and presence. A mostly residential neighborhood, you can find a quick drive through Southie intereseting by heading to Castle Island. The area has become very gentrified over the years, becoming one of the more desirable parts of the city to live in. The Institute of Contemporary Art and Convention Center are located in this neighborhood. It was also home to one of the most notorious criminals in US history, Whitey Bulger.

Fanuiel Hall/Quincy Market
One of the city's most visited tourist destinations
Fanuiel Hall is located in the heart of the city and has incredible shopping, food, bars, comedy clubs (like the Comedy Connection), and the cobblestone streets it is famous for. This part of the city can get very busy with tourists. Also watch out for people trying to scam you from time to time by saying they lost their money and need 5 bucks for a ride to the airport, or some long winded story. It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes they look for people they think look gullible and prey on them (this could really happen anywhere in any city). Crime here is very low though, so don't worry too much about that. Here are some photos of Fanuiel Hall/Quincy Market, which has some great places to eat and shop:

A Cruise Through Boston
What Weather to Expect in Boston
Temperature ranges, precipitation and advice for your trip

Quincy Market and Customs House Tower
It's the "T." The mostly underground transportation system is known as the "T." Don't call it anything else, it's a dead giveaway you're a tourist!
Boston weather can range during the seasons from icy, blistering cold in the winter to very hot and humid in the summer. Expect summer and spring days to change without notice to rainy, cool days in the '50s and '60s, while peaking in the high 80's and sometimes 90's. Winter temps are typically between 25-45 during the day. Autumn temperatures range usually in the 50s and 60s and mostly dry.
Here's a chart with annual averages for precipitation in Boston as well as temperatures from Weather.com.
Peak fall foliage colors for Boston usually hits mid to late October. Colors here are vibrant, but even more so north of the city in the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont. Expect traffic and sometimes difficulty finding places to stay during those weeks, so book ahead. The western part of Mass, the Berkshires, is also known for its impressive foliage in autumn.
It's safe to say that it's "shorts and t-shirt" weather from late May to early September, plus or minus a few weeks. In the fall, you'll need a windbreaker, light jacket, or sweatshirt with pants, and in the winter, dress as warm as possible from December to mid March (again, plus or minus a few weeks).
Winter driving in Boston can be tough. If you haven't driven in the snow before, it might be a good idea to have some more experienced drive (Bostonians aren't very tolerant of newbie snow drivers!), or to at least rent an SUV with four wheel drive.

There are several cool places to visit not far from Boston, like Plum Island, Plymouth, Cape Cod, the Islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Even other states are comparitively close, Rhode Island being only about 45 miles away and New Hampshire about 30 miles away.
Boston Lighthouses
The oldest lighthouse in the country located on Little Brewster Island!
There are several lighthouses in Boston harbor. One in particular is Boston Light, or Boston Harbor Light, on Little Brewster Island. It lies on the outer harbor, not too far from the peninsula town of Hull. It is the very first lighthouse built in the United States in 1716, before the country claimed its independence from England. Currently standing is the 2nd lighthouse on the property, making it 2nd oldest in the United States. It is one of the most recognizable views of Boston. Other lighthouses in the area are the Graves Ledge Lighthouse (or the Graves) and Long Island Lighthouse.

- I've been to Fanuiel Hall/Quincy Market and I could just gorge myself on all the great seafood there. When I visit my family next I'll have to take my kids to a baseball game at Fenway Park!

- I have visited Boston a few times. Unfortunately, all my visits have been quite short but I liked what I saw. Hotels can be $$$ so it pays to reserve early and to shop around.

- I would say the best day in Boston would be a train ride down to Boston from Portland, then on to the Aquarium. We will pick a lunch at Fanuiel Hall then wrap the day up with a duck Boat ride.

- Very interesting and enjoyable lens to read about one of Americas oldest and most historical city. With recent championships won by the city's professional basketball, football, and baseball teams, Boston could easily be called "The City of Champions".
What I found most interesting was the proximity of Rhode Island(45 miles away) and New Hampshire(30 miles away) to this bustling metropolis. The accompanying photographs are a wonderful addition that really held my interest.
