Boston Acoustics Horizon vs. Bose Acoustimass 5

I'm a real audiophile, and I love a good, affordable sound system to complement my big-screen TV when I watch movies or listen to music. There are many packaged speaker-systems out there, some are very expensive, and some are more affordable. Here, I review the 2 affordable ones that I think are truly worth a buy if you're on a tight budget, but would also love to get that movie-theater sound for your average living room space: the Boston Acoustics Horizon Series MCS100MDNT 5.1-Channel Speaker System, and the Bose Acoustimass 5 - Speaker System with the separately-sold VCS-10 center speaker.

Home Theater Speaker Systems Review

Boston Acoustics Horizon vs. Bose Acoustimass 5

Boston Acoustics Horizon Series MCS100MDNT 5.1-Channel Speaker System (Black)

In my opinion, Boston Acoustics makes the best speakers out there on the market. Whether you're looking for car speakers, marine speakers, or home-theater speakers, you can be assured that you're getting high-quality workmanship, durable materials, and above all, absolutely stunning, life-like sounds from a premier industry leader. The B.A. Horizon Series is just such an example. It's a very affordable speaker system for your typical living room if you're trying to simulate a movie-theater setting. You get four bookshelf (or satellite) speakers, each with a 3" woofer, and a 3/4" dome tweeter that you can use to simulate a surround-sound environment. Then, there's a main 3" x 3/4" center speaker where all your movie dialogs come from. And, finally there's that all-important 8" 100-watt subwoofer that provides you with the loud, yet tight and realistic bass. The price, as of this review, is about $250 for the whole package. And believe me, you're not gonna find a better speaker system out there, anywhere, for this kind of price.

Bose Acoustimass 5 - Speaker System, ideal for stereo or home theater use - Black

Bose has been in the audio industry since the 60's, making high-quality speakers and other audio equipments for both the government and civilian sector. The Bose Acoustimass 5 speaker system comes a set of dual "rotatable " Direct/Reflecting cube satellite speakers and a 5" ported subwoofer. If you want a center speaker, then opt for the matching VCS-10 center speaker (reviewed below), sold separately. The main Acoustimass 5 system is $399, which will be enough to give your home-theater decent sound, but for that kind of price, there are other, better options out there.

Bose VCS-10 Center Channel - Speaker, home theater sound for component systems - Silver

This center speaker is the perfect complement to the Acoustimass 5 system. For roughly $200, it will be enough for most people. However, i find it a little flat and muddy since it's made up of only four, measly 2.5" woofers. Still, that's more than sufficient for most people to hear movie dialogs with.

THE VERDICT

Boston or Bose ?

Having owned both systems before, I must say that, while I'm no acoustics scientist, I know enough about enjoying sound to offer my sincere and honest opinions on affordable speaker systems. Having said that, I must tip my hat to the folks over at Boston Acoustics. I mean, these folks really care about sounds enough to create high quality speakers that will give listeners, audiophiles and non-audiophiles alike, the best bang for their bucks. Unlike Bose, which never publish their speaker stats, Boston Acoustics (just like most other speaker companies out there) provide full statistics on their speakers. This, first and foremost, allows the consumers to shop with confidence and without uncertainties ("hmmm...that Bose speaker doesn't post its frequency stat, would it hit the low notes enough for me ?"). On the other hand, if you're not into speaker stats, try test-listening to a pair Boston speakers anyway, and see what kind of sound you'll hear. i believe you will be amazed.

The Bose Acoustimass system, to its credit, does sound loud, and the Boston Acoustics Horizon system sounds just a little bit louder, but the biggest difference is that the Boston system sounds about a thousand light-years clearer and sharper than the Bose system. And let's face it, would you rather hear a bird chirping in the tree right next to you, or would you rather hear it chirping locked behind a completely sealed cage ? Well, with the Boston speakers, your bird chirps won't sound like they're behind a walled cage, i can tell you that. All in all, we'll make this short, sweet, and painless, and say that the Boston speakers will trump the Bose speakers any day of the week...and on most days they'll also trump the Bose speakers right out of the waters.

    Thank you...

I don't think I've ever read such a thoroughly complete summary - which in my opinion, is 'dead-on-accurate'!

Keep up the good work, and the great writing.
