Benefits of Boston Terrier Rescue
Boston Terriers are wonderful family pets but many people who would love to have one may not have the time, patience or money that goes into finding and training a puppy.
Older people may be concerned that the dog may turn out to be too energetic for them. Parents may worry that the dog may not be suited to deal with very young children.
Boston Terrier Rescue groups can be the solution to these problems.
My Boston Terriers
When I was born my parents had a Boston Terrier named Amber and she immediately became my protector and slept by my bed until my brother was born 3 years later. She then became his shadow. They seem to pay special attention to the most helpless member of their family. Amber quickly taught me to love the breed because I can't imagine a more loyal and affectionate pet.We are now glad to have our 4th Boston Terrier and she will help me make my point here. Four years ago my Dad was slowly slipping away to alzheimers and heart failure. His birthday was just before Christmas and we wanted him to have a special gift that year. My mother asked him what would really make him happy and he stunned us when he said he would like a "Boston Bulldog".
I just wanted to find him a nice companion not a show dog but with Christmas near you can imagine what prices were like. I got lucky and found a breeder in a remote area who didn't want an unreasonable price for a pup.
Jessie was the last of her litter left and her markings weren't ideal, but she has a pleasant personality and bonded with my Dad right away. As with most boston terriers, she tries hard to please and loves her family. She was a great companion for my Dad until he passed away 18 months later. Since then she feels that my Mom is her main responsibility.
I was very lucky to find a breeder who wasn't asking the $1,200 others were, plus Jessie turned out to have a very gentle disposition with my elderly parents. These are both worries that can be pretty much eliminated by using a Boston Terrier Rescue group.
Their Terriers are usually out of the puppy stage so you have a much better indication of their personality and energy level. All of them have already either been spayed or neutered and are generally very healthy, as well as being very affordable. Another bonus with these dogs is that they are also already trained in most cases.
I wasn't aware of the rescue option four years ago, and I'm sure I would not have been able to find a dog more devoted than Jessie. But if I ever want another Boston Terrier, I will contact them first.
Where To Find A Boston Terrier Rescue
That isn't the case for some people though and I believe it is one of the reasons that the various Boston Terrier Rescues have such nice dogs. A lot of people give them up because they are too energetic or playful.
Boston Terriers are also very social and want to be around people, not shut away or left alone too much. They want to be a part of the family not some kind of ornament.
Most of the rescue dogs are already out of the puppy stage and you get a good idea of their personality before you take one home. One of my neighbors recently adopted a rescue dog and was very pleased that she was able to judge the dog's temperament to match her needs. It is a great companion for her even though its not a terrier.
There are many other reasons that people must give up their dogs such as illness, relocation and reasons I'm sure I'd never guess. However, because a terrier has been put up for adoption does not mean that there is anything wrong with the dog.
The good people that provide the rescue service do so out of love for the breed. You can feel confident that if you adopt that the dog has been very well cared for by them and that they feel the dog is ready to be adopted. They will allow adoption of dogs that do have some health problems but they will advise you of these and do not place seriously ill dogs up for adoption.
It is my understanding that they have all been spayed or neutered and many I've looked at have been trained. The adoption cost is also very reasonable.
If you are interested in getting a Boston Terrier, I believe you'll be very impressed at what you find at Boston Terrier Rescue. I think there are rescue groups convenient to most areas in the USA.
The site to find a rescue group near you is www.btrescue.org. I'm sorry that is not a clickable link but it is a great site. Make sure you ask all the questions you need to and check out the dog to be sure you get along with each other. Since we all are only human, use your own best judgement and also have your vet check out your dog.
I hope you are able to find a Boston Terrier you can enjoy as much as we have. They are truly great pets and companions.
Dogs Are Full Of Surprises
Toby gets mad
I was trying to get my dog to play dead one day and he decided that he doesn't like it. I trained him the same way I did with all the other tricks he can do, but for some reason he doesn't like it. So now when you say "play dead" he gets pissed off....and its really funny
