This is an introduction to Botero and his artwork which is famous across his native Colombia and the rest of the world. If you wish to order reproductions of his work, we'd suggest this Botero Paintings page, which has around 200 of his best works in an online gallery. More from there can be seen below in the Botero feed, plus there are other social network content on this great artist available here too, such as Botero Flickr photos and a relevant YouTube video too!

We'd love this squidoo lens to become interactive, so if you have other comments and views to add in on painter Botero or sculptor Botero, then certainly add them in here. There will also be a new blog covering the great man too at Botero Blog which will be completed by late 2010 as well.

Further discussion on Fernando Botero

Botero is classed by many as an abstract artist because of his relaxed accuracy in terms of body shape and depiction, prefering to invest his own desires and feelings into the works. Such original thinking is always going to attract others and a Colombian artist will always need to be both impressive and original if international audiences are going to both appreciate and buy his art. You can do that right from this page, as handmade reproductions. Botero gained fame originally when he won the first prize at the Salón de Artistas Colombianos in 1958 and has since gone on to become one of the most famous contemporary and abstract artists across the world.

Botero was born in Medellin, Colombia, Botero moved to Bogota in 1951 and had his first international show at the Leo Matiz Gal. Leaving for Madrid in 1952, he studied at the San Fernando Academy and, from 1953 until 1955, studied fresco technique and art history in Florence which has influenced his painting ever since. Returning to Colombia, he exhibited at the Biblioteca Nacional in Bogota and began teaching at the School of Fine Arts of the National University; the same year, he spent time in Mexico studying the political murals of Rivera and Orozco, whose influence is evident in his political perspective.

Fernando Botero went to the United States in the late 1950s prompted a return to live and work in New York for ten years beginning in 1960. Although Abstract Expressionism interested him, he sought his primary inspiration from the Italian Renaissance. During this period he began to experiment with creating volume in his paintings by expanding the figures and compressing the space around them, a quality which he continues to explore whether painting imaginary group portraits or parodies on the work of famous masters.

I believe that it is important to create something in which the painting functions within free, imaginative, innovative parameters. It is not a matter of creating the kind of beauty that fits into the classical canons. The purpose, rather, is to reach a stage at which it has become possible to surprise and be surprised. It is a matter of finding something that, in the midst of exuberance and distortion, conveys peace and equilibrium.
