Boughton Biography
George Henry Boughton was born in England. He was just a small infant when his parents brought him to America. He grew up to became a painter. He sold his first painting when he was only 19 years of age. Boughton decided to spend his first earnings on a trip to London. Although he returned to the USA and lived here for a couple of years after his London trip, he later decided to visit Paris where he took Art lessons. After much hesitation, he finally made the decision to settle down in London. It was a hard decision, because Boughton truly loved both continents, Europe and America very much. However, he felt that his true roots were in England. His paintings of two pilgrims going to Canterbury inspired Van Gogh's first sermon. Van Gogh admired his work very much.
Boughton painted many landscape paintings, but he was interested in painting people, too. He made some fabulous book illustrations as well. In the painting shown here entitled Pilgrims Going to Church (1893 - 1905) he depicted pilgrims (early American settlers) on their way to church.
