My Outward Bound course was in the Boundary Waters. I fell in love with the place. If I catch a glimpse of just a couple of seconds of it on television, I recognize it and can't tear myself away. It is the first place I ever saw a the Northern Lights, a bald eagle in the wild, and porcupines up close and personal. Thank you for giving such thorough information so people who visit now will step lightly and keep it as beautiful as ever.

I got as far as Ely in 2009 but not into the Boundary Waters. I got as far as the mosquitoes on your description and turned around. I grew up in the U.P of Michigan and know those mosquitoes real well. I'll pass this time around.

Great resources and tips. As a native Minnesotan, I cannot believe that I have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing the Boundary Waters. It has been near the top of my Life List for quite some time now. I really do need to get up there way soon. Thanks!

Wow, what an extensive lens! Well done. I've been to the area once, on an extended hiking and canoeing trip--Kekabic Trail to a weeklong canoe to the Superior Trail. My journal of the trip can be found at www.HikingWriter.com. 5* for your work!

Thanks for commenting! Both the Q and the B-dub are special places that few people take the time or effort to get acquainted with.

I've been to the Canadian side, Quetico. it was fabulous and so is your lens! I caught my first pike there and a huge small mouth bass, camped and hiked (more like portaged) for 7 glorious days. fought mosquitoes, loved the loons, waited for sundowns. Your lens sent me back there. Thank you! I've faved and top ranked you.

    gmarlett,

The skeeters can be downright vicious during the summer if you happen to visit at the right time. The black flies are present can also be irritating, especially if the army worms are bad that year. Both are survivable and haven't yet interfered with my vacations. :)
  • gmarlett May 1, 2008 @ 9:05 pm | delete
Very nice lens. How are the mosquitos in the BW and are there blackflies as well?

Great lens with absolutely amazing photos! We used to camp/canoe multiple times every year when our kids were young, but haven't been in a while now. You certainly make me want to pack up and head out once again! I love the 'leave no trace principle'. Thanks for all the information. Great work!

I've dreamed of a wilderness adventure trip since I was a youngster - and your lens has rekindled it in me. Will I ever make it? I don't know - but I'm long overdue for a first visit to Canada so maybe this will galvanise me.
Superb page - very comprehensive, entertaining and thought provoking.
