Bournemouth Airshow 2009 - the free airshow

Bournemouth Airshow 2009

Launched in 2008, Bournemouth Airshow was so successful that they are doing it again.

A Four day extravanganza from 20th - 23rd August, the event is once again free to visitors and observers, and this year they plan to have even more displays! Sited at one of the UK's leading tourist resorts, over one of the largest natural harbours in the world, the airshow this year promises to be spectacular.

The lens image is the logo - made available from their site for promotion purposes. If you want to help get the word out Download it here

As someone who holds the view that free airshows need to be promoted, the fan page here should hold all the news and resources I can gather.

The Displays

What can you see?

This year the organisers have already confirmed that many of last year's displays will return:

  • the Red Arrows
  • the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
  • the Sea Vixen
  • the Black Cats Helicopter Display team
  • the Eurofighter Typhoon

Also Roar on the Shore will be an attempt to detonate 110,000 fireworks in 60 seconds. This is a world record attempt to raise money for "Help for Heroes" their supported charity.

Display Times: Full details are only in the souvenior brochure and the Bournemouth Daily Echo. Unfortunately the official information online is rather limited, probably to encourage programme sales:

Mixed News about the world record attempt "Roar on the Shore".

Apparently they did set off the most fireworks in one minute ever.

Unfortunately all the fireworks went off in under six seconds.

Arranging your visit

Attending the airshow

Getting there
If you are going to visit, parking can be difficult. If you are staying in a hotel then try to make sure you have access to a dedicated parking space. Failing that, a local friend is useful!

Although public transport by bus is not particularly good - expensive and often taking round about routes - getting into the area by train is easy with Bournemouth station, and a range of others actually within walking distance of the beach. As with any of these shows, expect the obvious places to be filled up quickly, so either go early or find a quiet spot on one of the cliff walks to view from.

Food and Drink
The area is already a tourist spot due to the beaches, and this is easily available. However if you are going to be on the beach watching I would suggest taking a bag with your own food and drink in it just in case; with seven miles of visitors watching the shows, queues can be long.

Hotels
Book early, since they can fill up fairly quickly, particularly ones with a view overlooking the bay and the show. However that does not mean that you won't find one, and what could be better than a balcony to act as your own private box to watch the show from?

Superbreak has a list of available hotels, but they are filling up fast!

A competitor - the Eastbourne Airshow

Two airshows in two weeks

the Bournemouth Airshow is a new entrant to the Free Airshow scene, but it has competition. Further round the coast Eastbourne, one of the longest running Free Airshow Events is trying to get the word out to make sure that their four-day event remains pre-eminent. Since Eastbourne occurs around the 16th August and Bournemouth around the 23rd, they are virtually going head to head - I suspect quite a few exhibitors will hop straight from one to the other!

Who will win in 2009? Aviation fans in England, of course!
