Bowfishing is the greatest water sport!

Bowfishing fun discovered on the bayou

Try to fish with a primitive bow and arrow. Hey, "No Bait Needed" when you bowfish! All you need is to see what you're shooting at. A few years back a friend of mine introduced me to bowfishing and what a blast. I really got into this new sport hook, line, and sinker. Maybe I should say, "Bow, arrow, and retriever" instead.

Obvious reasons to bow fish are to put meat on the dinner table but being able to spend time with the kids also has a great importance to my family life. Most bowfishing in the U.S. is to kill the over population of the Grass Carp but living in the south there are Red Fish and Sheep Head that are very tasty which way ever you chose to cook them. Most of the bowfishing takes place in the marshes or grassy areas near the Gulf of Mexico.

Bowfishing Gear

Just a few essential items you might need to go bowfishing.

Bowfishing1st is a bowfishing bow.

Most bows are in the zero let off category like the Barracuda Compound Bow that my son and I shoot and have come to love. Why a zero let off bow? You get the ability to snap shoot at your targets (shoot quickly) since your shooting in shallow waters and only get too see your targets for a short time. Shooting like this is better known as instinctive shooting for its quick point and shoot without really aiming a whole lot at your target. Another bow of choice for the kids was the Genesis bow. While the kids were at a younger age they couldn't draw or pull back the 30lb. to 40lb. bows so the Genesis bow was ideal with only giving a 15lb. to a 20lb. draw weight.

2nd is a bowfishing retriever
.
Tried and very true to the industry is the retriever provided by AMS. This still is way more efficient in reeling in your fish for this style of fishing. It has a reasonable cost. It outweighs the lower model for hand lining in your fish by tenfold. I guess it really boils down to what you prefer to use or have already gotten use to using while bowfishing but I would highly recommend the AMS Bowfishing Retriever Pro Reel

3rd is your bowfishing rest.

I prefer to use the Trophy Ridge Bowfishing Whisker Biscuit Arrow Rest because unfortunately I usually get stuck driving the boat for the kids and get left over shots from them or the fish they miss. The Whisker Biscuit hold your arrow on all sides so you're ready to shot as long as your arrow stays knocked. My kids still use their AMS bowfishing rest without any real problems since there is little parts to cause problems.

4th is your no gloves?

What are No Glove you might ask? If you're not an archer they are small rubber placements on your bow string that helps you grab. This allows your fingers the aid they need when drawing back so as not to hurt your finger when letting your shot go. Glover or archers gloves have no place to offer any benefits in this water activity of bowfishing. I recommend installing the no gloves yourself or even having the local archer shop install them for you if you don't have a bow press.

5th last and most important is the bowfishing arrow you chose.

My sons and I all use the 5/16" yellow jacket with the muzzy point or the Cajun point tip. I like building my own whenever possible to save a buck or two here and there. Let's face it though fully assembled is nice also when you're in a hurry just to get out the front door and on the water. Cajun Piranha Yellow Jacket, Cajun Arrows, Archery

My Bowfishing Boat

It would be much better to use the boat as a vessel to bowfish but sometimes the boat serves the purpose of a playpen when I'm outside doing yard projects. My next little bowfishing buddy is learning fast to follow his Dad out the front door if he doesn't want to get left behind.

150 Watt High Pressure Sodium Bowfishing Lights VS. 500 Watt Halogen Bowfishing Lights for Nighttime Bowfishing

All The Bowfishing Lights Benefits and Downfalls

Light Test in the Bayou

First off a Lumen is a unit of measurement of the amount of brightness that comes from a light source. For example, a 100 watt light bulb produces roughly 1200 Lumens.

500 Watt Halogen bowfishing lights,

Pros
1. Lower cost
2. Availability (can find at most hardware stores)
3. Cheaper to replace if damaged

Cons
1. Bad reflective light that lowers the visibility through the water
2. White light spectrum (unnatural)
3. Cheaply made product
4. Lower lumen output (10,500 per 500w bulb)

150 Watt High Pressure Sodium

Pros
1. More lumens (more light)
2. Lower wattage (less power drain on your generator)
3. Natural light color (almost in the orange/yellow spectrum, less reflective)
4. Longer bulb life

Cons
1. Higher prices
2. Lower availability (can't usually find at Lowes or Home Depot)
3. Harder to find replacement parts

I started off with the halogen lights since the lower prices and availability but have converted to the high pressure sodium over time.

Bowfishing light users have come up with a couple pretty ingenious ways to install bowfishing lights. While purchasing your lights be aware if they are 120v or 240v because this will play a factor during the wiring process. I personally chose the 500watt halogen first since it was on a 120v system.

After the 500watt halogen I upgraded to the high pressure sodium lights for wattage and light output increase. The 150watt high pressure sodium lights also use a 120v system so they too were easy to install with the 3 color wiring system.

Both have a 3 wire color coded system making installs very easy

Bowfishing, the First Time We Limited Out

Redfish Only! Count Em! #20

Proud bowfishing sonI was a beautiful summers night back in June of 2009. We were taking my son out for his first bowfishing trip with his new bow. We headed south to Cocorie LA. where are fishing hole is about an hour from the house. The boat was in the water around 8:30 and we started to bowfish around dusk (about 9pm). He landed his first bowfishing fish around midnight. It couldn't have come at a better time. he was about to give up because everyone else had shot a fish except him. He was a very happy little boy in the heat of the moment.

I really enjoyed this lens. I've hunted and fished all my life but never bowfished. I think I'll give it a try. I hunt from a wheelchair. Is bowfishing practical for me?

I went bowfishing back in 1976 for the first time. My step-dad and mom had taken us to Bay Lake right to the west of the huge Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota. The red eye bass were biting like crazy. Well after we had gotten our limit I took my bow and fishing arrow(no line) down to the inlets that they had made for the boats. By accident I found out that if you would jump on the edge of the bank a big old bullhead would appear. It wasn't long before I had a stringer full of bullheads. Unfortunately my parents did not share the same enthusiasm for bullheads at that moment because in order to fish for some more red eye bass we needed to eat up a ton of red eye bass. hmmmm live and learn.

P.S. My grampa smokes the grass carp, my grandma pressure cooks and cans the meat and they call it "Okoboji Salmon." I've had it, it's a darn site better tasting then tuna fish.

    P.P.S. Nice lens.
