Bowling Lessons and Instruction

Ranked #1,284 in Sports & Recreation, #38,727 overall

It's never too early or too late to improve your bowling game!

Whether you are just starting to learn the game or have been bowling your entire life, my guess is that you could use some instruction.

It is natural for beginners to understand that a coach can help them improve their game faster than if they simply tried to improve on their own. What's less obvious to an experienced bowler is how some instruction can improve their game.

Some bowlers let their egos get in the way. After all, they've been bowling for 20 years; what's a bowling coach going to tell me that I don't already know?

In most cases, plenty. Unless you are carrying a 240 average in your weekly league, you've got some room to improve your game. Some of the most well-known PBA professionals have a coach they work with regularly. If they have elements of their game that need improvement, so do you.

Bowling instruction can take several forms: one-on-one lessons with a certified instructor, group lessons, video, books and so on. What you choose to do and how you do it depends on how serious you are and your ability to commit time and money to the task.

For most bowlers, a combination of training techniques should be considered. Everyone learns at a different pace and better by some methods than others. You may be able to read a book and pick up some valuable tips than will help you immediately. Others need that personal touch to have the instruction make sense.

In any case, once you've had the benefit of some qualified instruction, practicing what you've learned is critical to your success. Old habits die hard, and the way to build new, better habits is through practice.

Let a Hall of Fame Bowler Share His Secrets With You

Hall of Fame bowler Joe Wilman said, "Making spares consistently is the principal distinction between the star and the average bowler." What he's saying is simple: the star knows that if he continues to pick up his spares, he will wind up with a respectable game ... and that the strikes will eventually come.

He goes on to say "The average bowler, on the other hand, never bothers to figure that if he made only spares throughout a game, he could still roll a game of 190. He is always too intent on the strike, which is the beginning and end of bowling as far as he is concerned. The average bowler never really takes the time to stop and consider the importance of the spare shot, and consequently he never practices shooting at spares."

Wilman continues, "I know from personal experience that spares can make or break you, especially when your strike ball is not clicking as it should. Many a time I have gone what seemed to be endless frames without a strike, just converting each spare as it popped up, and then suddenly found myself right up in the running as the strikes began to appear."

His point is clear: by keeping himself in the running by making the spares, he avoided those really bad low games that can cost the difference between winning a tournament and finishing out of the money.

The same advice could apply to you: picking up those spares could be the difference between your team winning or losing on league night.

How To Bowl Strikes
We all know by now that, while converting spares is critical to maintaining your average, it's the strikes that make you a winner. Fortunately, all the required information you need to know about throwing strikes has been compiled into a 115-page report, "How to Bowl Strikes: Winning Tips, Techniques, Tools and Strategies".

The report starts with the all-important fundamentals that are crucial to your success as a bowler (and which even experienced bowlers would do well to read), including lane layout, stance, armswing, pushaway, timing, the approach, proper footwork, and proper release.

You'll then learn how to target a perfect strike (target line bowling) with the help of targeting aids (the dots and arrows), as well how to effectively target splits should any pins remain standing. Then, hook bowling, lane conditions and more advanced techniques.

What you won't read is a boring academic discussion of the endless combinations of styles used. You'll only learn the best approaches, those that yield consistent results time and time again.
