Hand Feeding Swans on Lake Windermere

Ranked #13,282 in Pets & Animals, #351,959 overall

Bite the hand that feeds you!

Hand feeding swans and their cygnets at Bowness Pier on Lake Windermere, Lake District, England; and with a tendency to 'bite the hand that feeds you' can add a bit of excitement to the experience. Joining in with the swans frenzied feed are of course the assortment of ducks, pigeons, blackbirds and seagulls.

Whooper and Mute Swans

It is all in the beak

Whooper and Mute swansAmongst those feed are Whooper and Mute swans. The Whooper swans can be identified by their yellow beaks and Mutes by the orange beaks. I can't remember seeing any adult Bewicks, but in comparison they are similar to the Whooper swan but have proportionally more black and less yellow on their bill, they are also smaller than both Mute and Whooper swans and have a faster wing beat.

Lake Windermere

The largest natural lake in England

Lake WindermereThe Lake District in Cumbria, North East England formed at the end of the last ice age 13,000 years ago when the retreating glaciers gouged out great depressions in the mountains which filled with water; Lake Windermere at 10.5 miles long, one mile wide and 220 feet deep not only being the largest in the Lake District but also the largest natural lake in England.

Today Lake Windermere surrounded by forested hills on all sides is a tourist attraction bustling with wildlife, fish and birds alike, and hosts leisure activities such as yachting, boating and canoeing; all which can be seen it its full splendour when visiting the area.

Bowness-on-Windermere

Bowness Pier

The town of Bowness-on-Windermere one of the most popular tourist centres in the Lake District, located on the eastern side of Lake Windermere, is the main tourist resort on the lake.

Bowness, which has been a settlement since the Vikings, and the older part of the twin towns of Windermere and Bowness, grew to prominence with the introduction of the railways in the Lake District. From Bowness Pier motor and rowing boats are available for hire and a choice to take one of the lake cruises; and from Bowness Ferry Nab there is a regular car ferry service to the Ferry House Far Sawrey on the other side of the lake taking about 10 minutes to cross.
