Box Kites

In November, 1894, Lawrence Hargrave, an Australian, and Swain demonstrated the box kite with the drum-tight skin demonstrating the unique tensioning system devised by Hargrave. In 1893 Hargrave attempted to develop a manned flying machine. He linked several of his box kites, called the Hargrave cells, together which created enough lift for him to fly some 16 feet off the ground. The Cody kite is a winged variant of this kite, developed by Samuel Cody as a platform for military observation during the second Boer War. Also the military used a kite/radio transmitter combination which was issued to pilots during World War II for use in liferafts.

Kites are tethered flying objects using aerodynamic lift, which requires wind, or towing for generation of airflow over the lifting surfaces. The box kite is noted for developing relatively high lift, and is a high performance kite; a type of cellular kite. It typically has four parallel struts and made rigid with diagonal crossed struts. They have two sails or ribbons with a width about a quarter of the length of the box. The ribbons are wrapped around the ends of the box, which leaves the ends and middle of the kite open. When in flight, one strut is the bottom and the bridle is tied between the top and bottom of this strut. A dihedral has two plane faces or sides. The dihedrals of the sails help the stability.

Large box kites are known as cellular kites meaning there are many boxes each with its own set of sails, rather than just one box. Altitude records for most of the kite flying are held by large box kites. These have Dacron sails and flown with Spectra cable. High performance box kites originally used oiled silk, linen or hemp sails before dacron, spectra and kevlar became available, and were flown with a steel cable.

A person can build his own kite or purchase one by a kite manufacturer who is a member of the Kite Trade Association International (KTAI) which includes kite retailers. Some kites are made from plastic, animal skins, wood, metal, aluminum or paper, etc.
Children and adults find great pleasure in flying kites.

Box Kite Guestbook

Once had a triple diamond stacked boxkite. I believe it was made by north pacific. It was called a super soaring box kite. Lost it one day with approx3500 ft of line out. Kite was still flying directly overhead when line broke. Line became entangled in huge oak approx 700 yds downrange.kite flew on for rest of day and was gone by morning. Never could find another likeit and am about to build, one myself.
