Premium Box Wine: It's not an Oxymoron!

It's hard for me to believe, but recently I bought wine in a box.  On purpose.  Just to have around the house.

This is slightly embarrassing because I used to make fun of mom for her wine in a box drinking.

In my defense, boxed wine has improved greatly over the past couple of years, and is a great choice if you like to have a glass or two with dinner but can't finish a whole bottle in a sitting.

This lens is dedicated to this kind of premium box wine, how to identify it and where to buy it.

First things First

What is boxed wine? We'll get to premimum in a moment.

A box wine (or boxed wine, cask wine, bladder pack, goon, space bags, goon bag, goon sack, silver sack of pleasure) is a wine packaged as a Bag-In-Box. Such packages contain a plastic Category: wikt - :bladder|bladder protected by a box, usually made of corrugated fiberboard.

Don't just take my word for it

Is it time to try boxed wine?
Unfortunately, wine drinking tends to carry along some snobbery with it, especially among those who consider themselves to be connoisseurs. This can make it very difficult to know exactly what wine you should buy for your own gatherings. Even though you could buy the finest wine for your party, you might want to consider having boxed wine. Some people love having this around and others scoff at the idea. Is there such a thing as good boxed wine?

Pros & Cons of Boxed Wines - Comparing Pros & Cons of Wine in a Box
Boxed wines are becoming more popular in America. They've already established themselves in Australia and France but the low quality of early boxed wines continues to hurt their public perception in America. This is changing and while there are some definite advantages to using boxed wines, there are also drawbacks.

Even the Italians are going for the Box

Italy Relents On Boxed Wine : NPR
Italy has said it will now allow wine in a box. Ray Isle, deputy wine editor for Food and Wine Magazine, says the change came when Italians realized they couldn't compete in the global market without changing traditional restrictions on regional wines.

Nice lens. Really comprehensive. I never considered box wine as an option. My first experience was a bad one. I'll have to give them another look. Wine Reviews Blog
