UFC vs Boxing -- Which is the better sport?

There is something inside males that causes us to ask the question "Who would win in a fight?" This process starts very early on. I remember as a child wondering if a tiger could beat a lion, how tough my dad was, and most importantly could the Hulk beat up Superman?

For better or worse, it's there. Blame it on the testosterone. So given the fact that "boys will be boys," a very common, very popular, and hotly debated question today revolves around which is the better sport, UFC or boxing? Who is the most skilled fighter, a boxer of a master of MMA? (And can my dad beat up your dad?)

Boxing vs. UFC

Which is the better sport?

Many UFC fans would argue that a boxer could never win against a master of MMA. While a boxer may be skilled with his hands, a UFC fighter can use his entire body as a weapon. If one style of fighting doesn't seem effective, he'll simply switch to another. Once a UFC fighter takes a boxer to the ground, it's all over. A boxer doesn't know what to do when he's on his back. Boxing is a dying sport they say. UFC is overtaking boxing.

Conversely, a boxing fan may feel that a UFC fighter wouldn't last 2 minutes in the ring with a professional boxer. In boxing, defense is every bit as important as offense which a UFC fighter is not accustomed to. This gives the boxer the edge. Also, once you remove a UFC fighter's ability to use his legs or tackle his opponent, the fight is basically over. If a UFC fighter is forced to rely solely on his fists, a boxer wins every time without question. Regarding the question of which is the better sport, popularity is not the sole decisive factor. Boxing has been around far longer than UFC in the US. Boxing has its share of problems right now but they are self-inflicted. The sport of boxing is beginning to rebound and gradually making a comeback.

Boxing Is a Better Sport than UFC

In my opinion.

Personally, I prefer boxing over UFC. UFC feels very "high school" to me. Many of the spectators and participants seem to be the Wal-mart crowd. Most UFC matches quickly end up with two guys rolling around on the floor, hitting each other in the face with their elbows and knees. Didn't we already see this as kids after school in the parking lot? Sorry but I outgrew that scene years ago (and honestly the rest of you should have too). While I don't mind a little blood, UFC is far too gory and just plain brutal.

The sweet science of boxing offers poetry in motion, skill, grace, speed, and precision. Defense is equal in importance to offense. While boxing is obviously a violent sport, it is controlled violence that doesn't become anywhere near as out of control as UFC.

Simply put, I am entertained by boxing and frankly a little disgusted by UFC.

Boxing vs UFC -- The Final Round

Who will score the knockout?

Floyd Mayweather

That having been said, I do not believe boxing is necessarily a "better" sport than UFC or vice versa. Nor do I believe UFC is overtaking boxing. Boxing certainly has its challenges ahead, many of which are uphill. Corrupt promoters and self-serving boxing superstars (*cough, Floyd Mayweather, cough*) are not doing the sport any favors.

Regardless, pitting these two sports against one another is an unfair comparison. This is an "apples and oranges" argument as boxing and UFC are simply different sports. I do, however, believe UFC is not for me just as boxing may not be for others and I accept that. This isn't a matter of right or wrong, good or bad--it's a matter of preference.

I do find myself watching both boxing and mixed martial arts and both have their good points and bad. When MMA first started I can remember some of those ground submission fights lasting a long time with not much action. I'm glad they fixed that problem.

Boxing needs stars and young fans, the UFC is becoming the sport of the younger generation and if boxing doesn't develop talent soon they will become horse racing

I am a diehard boxing fan, but ufc has grown on me in the last year or so because they always put the best matchups out there

balla says:

Boxing the sport is better, but UFC is run infinitely better. Boxing's management is a mess. Overall though, the top boxing matches are better.

pittfan33 says:

i would say boxing is the more cleaner defined sport, but ufc is starting to get marquee names and the better matchups. ufc doesn't take 5 to ten years to get the top fighters to fight

proboxingfans says:

I agree, boxing is better, but I'm a fan of both.

RedSportNiac says:

I haven't watch UFC yet.

Leo says:

All I know is that boxer Ray Mercer knocked out UFC champ Tim Sylvia in 15 seconds..LOL

UFC

Tim Larner says:

Fighters that have had a boxing rec, Anderson Silva, Marcus Davis, Nick Diaz, Vito Belfort, Randy Couture & Don Frye i could name more, i used to be a massive fan of boxing some of my friends are pro fighters however it is so corrupt and non entertaining any more, any one can name twenty fighters from the 70's, 80's and early 90's but no one can do it now. if i have the choice between watching the UFC or Boxing i can honestly im with the UFC, boxing is a skill and an art of one thing allways has been, never any proper wars, all about the money and tbh, when should i fighter pick and choose who he should fight, he can avoid the ranked number 1, 2 or 3 and fight some one who has been beat so prolong his record and payday.........thats why people want the UFC, because the fighters know win or lose they get paid and the fighers make an effort to put a show on to prove who really is the best ....................................... and how can any one call it barbaric, thats what there trade is, the learned it and they master it to entertain the masses, majority enjoy it other wise they wouldnt do it, martial arts is a science is an art .................... people are learning fast due to the recession get your moneys worth and the UFC purely defines that word

Josh:D says:

Im a 17 years old and a ametaur boxer and I believe boxing is one of the best standup fighting styles one could learn but, ufc is just alot more explosive and more entertaining, u can learn any martial art and use it in the cage, boxings just boxing

Joshua says:

Ray mercer may have knocked out Tim Sylvia, but who cares.. Kimbo Slice made Ray look like a bitch standing up and on the ground. Ray got a lucky punch in the first 15.. Not impressive. Any boxer that steps in the cage with a UFC fighter is going to get there ass beat. Boxing is 1 dimensional. And for anyone that thinks UFC fghters cant box are idiots.. Considering 99.9& of them have Muay Thai and boxing experience. Look what happened to James Tony.. EVERYONE can agree with me on how pathetic that was. That what happens when a boxer doesn't get lucky.

JamesPittman says:

I don't really think this is a fair question. I enjoy UFC more than I enjoy boxing, but it does not mean there are not any good boxing matches anymore. Nov 13 2010 there will be a phenomenal boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito. I will be watching that one.
Comparing boxing to UFC would be like asking if you like track or cross country more. Or even Greco-Roman wrestling to UFC. They are different sports with different rules.

UFC all the way!
