Ask anyone and you'll probably get the same answer, what goes hand in hand with boy scouts? A Swiss Army Knife. Have you ever been in boy scouts? Or perhaps you might know a scouter or two what was your first pocket knife? Probably a Swiss army knife, right?

Sure and for good reason, Swiss army knives are built tough and serve as a multi tool tool as well and make for an excellent whittler as well. The perfect tool for any boy scout or camper for that matter.

I know when I think back to my childhood and my boy scout days I have fond memories sitting around the campfire whittling little tools and well being just a boy. I'm sure many of your know exactly what I mean. Which is why in my opinion every scouter needs 2 things, a good boy scout handbook and a swiss army knife.

My own boy is in cubs right now, but I look forward to the day when he gets a little older and I can hand him his very own swiss army knife. It's almost a right a passage, at least I think so.

SaS Survival Handbook

Not a Boy Scouts Handbook - But a Must Read

I've owned a copy of the S.A.S Survival manual ever since I was a boy. If you have too then you remember the old original white paperback version. In fact I still own it. It has seen better days and is now faded, ear marked, and torn from many years of abuse and reference.

This newer revised edition is even better then the original SAS Survival manual, with more pictures and covering more material and every climate you can think of, and guess what...yes I just had to own this one too. It really has become the "bible of survival manuals".

Hand a copy of this book to any true blue boy scout and watch his eyes light up in excitement and run off to his room where he'll learn everything there is to know about survival. A fair bit of warning though once you do buy your son this book...be careful where you step in your backyard, there just might be a booby trap or two. Just kidding....but any boy scout will surely love the techniques inside this book and it makes for a great unofficial boy scout manual.

For those not in the know, that's an elite unit of the British Army trained to carry out operations in ALL parts of the world. Eventually, the author became a survival instructor to the SAS, so you can be sure that this guy knows his stuff."

Having quality camping cookware is a must have if you want to get the most out of any camping trip especially if your planning on feeding a bunch of hungry boy scouts. Which is why i highly recommend the Lodge Logic Dutch Ovens. They come in all shapes and sizes and the one to the right is the "4 Qrt size" but depending on the size of your scout troop or at how ravenous your boys are you may want to get a bigger size. For me the "4 Qrt" is just the perfect backpacking size, not too big and not too heavy especially if I'm bringing it along a hike into camp.

In any scout camp planning your meals is important and having quality gear that will last camp after camp is just as important and these cast iron dutch ovens definitely will stand the test of time and several troops of ravenous rowdy boy scouts.
