When Your Older Son and Younger Son Have to Share

Having sons, especially when they are separated by several years, share a bedroom can be a task. Although not as difficult as having girls share a room, you'll want to make sure that you keep both of your sons interests in mind as you move forward with your decorating plans.

Sharing rooms is never easy-trust me, I shared with my older sister for five years-especially when your children are separated by several years. Fortunately putting sons together doesn't have to be as difficult as putting girls together when it comes to your children getting along and finding things in common.

That being said, putting your younger son and your older son together can be a tall order and a tough task, as far as decorating goes. Of course, as a parent, you want to decorate your young son's bedroom with planes, trains, automobiles and of course, teddy bears and light blue. You want to keep your young son's youthful innocence around as long as possible. This is going to especially difficult if you have your young son sharing a room with a much older son, who is in his teens or even his youngest teens. It is not advisable to keep your youngest son sharing a room with your teenage son, especially when your teenage son is reaching the ages of 14, 15 and 16.

If you're pairing up your older son with your young son, the best thing you can do is find a happy medium for the décor that needs to go around the room, or find a way to separate the room in two visually so that each of your son's can have his own personal space that reflects his age, style and personality.

If you can't separate the room due to a lack of space, make sure you choose items that will complement both sons. An area rug that is a solid color, like a green area rug, will be a better choice over another area rug that might only cater to one of your sons. Especially since, in choosing kids area rugs, a parent is more likely to choose an area rug that complements the younger son, since a younger son needs more protection.

You'll also want to choose items that both of your sons can use that will also help them to get along better. This may or may not include video gaming systems, books, board games and other items that both of your sons can enjoy, learn from and play together.

Decorating a bedroom that can be shared by a younger son and an older son, especially when they are separate by several years, can be a task. You just have to remember each step of the way that decorating with both of your son's interests in mind is key to creating a space that will both preserve the peace and allow both sons to create their own space that shows off their individual personalities.

As a parent, it's your job to make sure that you don't stifle the growth and development of either of your sons. That's why it's important to keep careful watch and make sure that you are prepared to separate your sons to different rooms when the time comes that they are too different to share the same space.
