Another View of BSA's "No Gays" Policy

Homosexuality has long been regarded as morally perverse. It is neither moral or immoral -- morality involves choice. We now know that sexual preference is established very early in life. The whole nature/nurture debate is moot. In neither case are little children in any position to control their own destiny in this matter.

Therefore, we aren't dealing with willfully depraved degenerates, but a bona fide minority. Although this may make adult leaders uncomfortable, they should deal with it in a mature, responsible, adult manner. Conservative politicians scored points with their constituents by predicting the collapse of the military if the "don't ask, don't tell" policy was adopted. In fact the furor was a tempest in a teapot since the policy merely acknowledged what had been the status quo, probably since Valley Forge.

Scouting is also designed to teach civic responsiblity and leadership. Knee-jerk responses to emotional "wedge issues" like flag-burning and gay marriage isn't responsible citizenship. Our country is founded not only on majority rule, but also freedom and individual rights. If Scouts are the leaders of tomorrow, what direction do we want them to lead?
