Bisphenol A Lurks in Baby Bottles and Sippy Cups
You keep hearing about it right? What is BPA and why should it be avoided?
An industrial chemical called Bisphenol A or BPA is making the headlines too much. Interestingly it is not getting so much attention because of its hormone-like qualities and dangerous implications as it is the fact that it can most commonly be found in places you would least suspect, like baby bottles, toys, sippy, cups, and baby formula cans. It is hard to fathom why products commonly used by babies would contain such harmful chemicals. But they do...and YOU need to know about it.
Bisphenol A is an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. BPA is used to make lightweight, high-performance plastics that are tough and heat resistant. Immediately then you can see the benefit to companies in choosing to use this ingredient for things such as bottles and cups.
This chemical has the ability to mimic hormones as well and several studies have linked BPA to weight gain, abnormalities that can lead to breast and prostate cancer, brain damage, abnormal organ development, and hyperactivity. The companies using BPA have declared their products only contain amounts considered safe but this does not address cumulative exposure from all the vari
ous products we use that contain BPA. When you consider all of the different products you may use that contain this chemical the exposure level does not appear to be so safe or small. In fact the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has declared that "human exposures are above the current U.S. safety limit."
This lens is dedicated to showing you alternative bottles and sippy cups that are safe for your child.
P.S. Other things to look out for...baby toys and teethers with BPA as well as pacifiers, toddler eating utensils and plates. These items can also contain BPA.

Glass Baby Bottles
BPA Free for Your Baby!

Parents have two main choices when it comes to baby bottles...glass or plastic. Glass is a classic bottle option that stood strong until the late part of the 20th century when plastic became the rage. Glass bottles are actually not that easy to break as they are made with sturdy glass and they are much safer as far as toxins and chemicals go. It is no wonder that glass bottles are making a comeback. Glass bottles rock! Here are few glass bottle options:
EvenFlo Classic Baby Bottles - They may look like quaint antiques from a bygone era, yet they are still highly functional. The glass holds heat well and they clean up without the common staining found in plastic bottles. The Sensitive Response nipples are soft and flexible, designed to adjust to a baby's sucking pressure so it's a comfortable feeding experience. Each bottle comes with a nipple, a cap ring, and a nipple cap.
SiliSkin Baby Bottles - Baby can grab, hold and avoid slippage when feeding from a glass bottle encased in a colorful Siliskin. Microwave safe, hypo allergenic and dishwasher friendly, this translucent silicone sleeve allows you to see measurements and liquid in the bottle. Cleaner than any plastic, parents-in-the-know realize that glass bottles are the best.
Wee-Go Baby Bottles - Because of the recent concern over leaching chemicals in plastic baby bottles, Babylife is reintroducing glass baby bottles, but with a new design and safety twist: the bottle is covered with a modern sleeve that will help protect the bottle from breakage and also prevent bumping into other articles in your diaper bag. This sleeve is free of plastics and is 100% non-toxic. The bottle and the sleeve can be boiled or put in the dishwasher together. The silicone nipple is latex-free and non-toxic. The plastic ring, plug and cap contain no polycarbonates and are food grade, FDA approved and recyclable. The sleeve provides a good gripping surface during feeding and also a great tactile experience for your baby.
As you can see they are affordable, stylish, and safe!

Science Says We Can't Risk It!

Baby Bottles Leach Toxic Chemical
...according to New U.S. and Canadian Study
Environmental Health Groups Call for Immediate Moratorium on Bisphenol A inBaby Bottles, Food and Beverage Containers
Dozens of state and national environmental health organizations in the U.S. and Canada are calling for an immediate moratorium on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles and other food and beverage containers, based on the results of a new study that demonstrates the toxic chemical BPA leaches from popular plastic baby bottles when heated.
BPA, a synthetic sex hormone that mimics estrogen, is used to make hard polycarbonate plastic. Ninety-five percent of all baby bottles on the market are made with BPA. The results of the U.S. study show that, when new bottles are heated, those manufactured by Avent, Evenflo, Dr. Brown's and Disney/First Years leached between 4.7 - 8.3 parts per billion of BPA. Recent research on animals shows that BPA can be harmful by disrupting development at doses below these levels.
Results of the study, "Baby's Toxic Bottle: Bisphenol A Leaching from Popular Baby Bottles," contribute to a growing body of evidence that calls for immediate protective action to reduce public exposure to BPA, especially for infants and children. Last month, Michigan Representatives John Dingell and Bart Stupak launched a Congressional investigation to ascertain the safety of BPA used to line the cans of infant formula products. The study was commissioned by Environmental Defence of Canada in cooperation with The Work Group for Safe Markets in the U.S., and researched by the laboratory of Frederick vom Saal, PhD., at the University of Missouri,
"The only appropriate response to evidence that a known toxic chemical leaches from baby products is to phase it out and replace it with safer products in order to prevent harm wherever possible," said Mike Schade, a report co-author with the Center for Health, Environment and Justice. "Environmental health organizations from across the U.S. are calling for an immediate moratorium on the use of BPA in baby bottles and other food and beverage containers."
Studies conducted on laboratory animals and cell cultures have linked low doses of BPA to obesity, diabetes, thyroid disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer and other illnesses. BPA exposure is widespread and has been found in 95% of Americans tested. Scientists, physicians, and public health professionals suspect that existing scientific evidence on BPA indicates a real risk to human health.
